If things do get worse before they get better (if & when), then all the fluff just won't matter any more...movie stars, sports figures, you-name-it, etc. We should be concerned more about interpersonal relationships and community, far and beyond any celebrity's self-committed/demanded accolade.

Only those who must live vicariously will care. Hopefully, most will say, 'Damn them.'

I've heard movies (esp. horror movies) fare well in a bad economy. Escapism.

You can't be so soured you've forgotten acting is still considered an art form. Oscar parties are part of some peoples therapy.

Cinema and TV do even better in bad times. People still want to have fun and it's a cheap way to do it. Like StoneCold said, movies and celebs can help us forget about current problems for a couple of hours.
