High School Reunions.......

Postby S2M » Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:14 am

I thought this would be a nice change of pace from the current fare on the board.....

I've never been to any of mine. I wonder what they are like. Are they really just a competition to see who's done what, and a chance to bang that person you always wanted to....

Do many people actually attend? And who has some crazy stories they'd like to share....

OR

You can just tell me to get bent...there's always that option....

No idea, but my old high school is having a 20 yr reunion for my class later this year. I'll probably go, it'll be interesting to catch up with a few people, but there are a stack of people I'm actually dreading seeing again. It may be cool, it may be hell, but I can always leave early if need be, given I live about 15 minutes from the school.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I haven't gone either, and I probably wouldn't (I'm not even sure anyone bothered to have one for my class). As to whether they're fun or not... class reunions are for the people who enjoyed the people they went to school with. I went to school with mostly stuck up suburban kids and I was never like that, so I didn't fit in.

I had my group who weren't like that and I still talk to some of them. That's all I need. I seriously don't care what the rest of them are doing or how cute their kids are. If I wasn't good enough for their stuck up asses back then or I hung out with the wrong people (i.e. other people who also weren't good enough for them), I'm not going to be good enough now either.

And that may sound negative or bitter, but its really not.
I never wanted to be that kind of person, and I'm very glad I don't fit in with that b.s.

For my 10, Went to mine and I went to my (then) wife's.
Basically, people broke up into the same cliques that they had in HS. If you weren't a clique person, but just kind of hung out with everyone, it was a bit weird.

If you were close to your school buds or your class was fun, it could be cool. If not, then it could be a long night. Mine was a long night and my ex's was a blast.

Skipped the 20th.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

No, they were just a more fun group of people. Mine were just concerned about the same cliques they were in and some guy who acted like was my best friend tried to sell me life insurance within the first 20 minutes. Um, I didn't know you then, I don't know you now, later.

Some of it was okay, it's obviously nice to see them all, but I don't know, I found it pretty surreal.

Just depends on the group.

Yeah, I do too. Especially since I have a very lame high school class as far as planning and making a reunion happen. Our 20th should have been a couple years ago, and we have not had ONE reunion since graduation!! But a good number of us are connecting in facebook now, and some are talking a 25th reunion and because of facebook, I can see it actually happening now. I've actually enjoyed catching up with people. And I was pretty shy in high school, but now I am not, so I think I would actually enjoy myself more now with them all then I did back then, if that makes sense

Man, lots of miserable high school experiences here! Geez.

I loved high school. I didn't have a million close friends, but I had a lot of "regular friends" I'd hang with anytime, and I have some great ones from those days. Most people were pretty chill at my HS, not very cliquey at all. Granted, I graduated only four years ago, but I've already lost touch with a lot of people that I definitely wouldn't mind hanging out with again. So I'd love a reunion

I went to my 10 year. Felt just like High School...cliques and competition. I skipped my 20 but heard from others that it was much better because everyone seemed past that.

I have heard many stories about Reunions suffering because of Facebook. Used to be the best reason for the Reunion was to reconnect with friends from school...now you can do it on your own.

There's probably something to be said about just being used to being a certain way in certain settings. I'm sure 10 years out of high school, most people would be mature enough not to act like that on their own. But, boom, plop them into that old setting and they revert to that old way. I dunno

About 70 percent of my graduating class are on Classmates. I can't even find one of them on FaceBook. Quite a few are on Myspace however.

You're probably correct. Besides, who are you going to migrate to when reunited? Your friends from school, or everyone else? Makes sense that there would still be a 'clique' mentality. But by the 20 year it seems like people are in a different place mentally. It's more about sharing the entire experience.

Went to 10, skipped 20, went to 30 ... found out that maturity cures a lot :D. It seems mostly everyone was riddled with insecurities in high school, even the ones we thought had it all ...

I'm glad I went; reconnected with a group of girls and still meet up with them for dinner a couple of times a year.

It's funny because a small group of girls in my class got together recently for the first time in 20 years, only after reconnecting in facebook, and they had so much fun they decided to do that a couple times of year too. Unfortunately I live 1000 miles away though, so it's not so easy for me. When I make it back that way though, I think it would be fun to see some of them. I guess it all really depends on your high school experience and whether you hated it or not. I really do think as the years go on, people do mature though. This group I have reconnected with weren't even my closest group of friends back then, but it's been really fun getting to know them as adults now.

My High School experience was "get in, get out, get done". I find I knew a lot of people but I didn't have many "friends". And I was fine with that. So when I see alumni on Facebook I am still pretty reserved about adding "friends". They were aquaintances. They few people I think of as friends I have pretty well already found.

Funny thing. A high school reunion is one of those things that you naturally don't want to attend. And it's not the status thing or people you dislike. For me, it was that I just value my privacy and I'm kinda set in my ways, so it just seemed awkward. But keep in mind, that in my relatively small class of 128, we all were friends on some level. Of course, there were circles, but no real cliques. Whether you were a jock or musician, Beta Club or barely squeaked-by, we all knew each other as a big family.

Anyha, I talked myself into going to my 25th...dreading it all the way there.

But within 5 mins I was comfortable and in a constant grin from seeing old faces, shaking hands & getting hugs. It was wonderful. We had a Friday night mixer with a stereo playing all our old tunes and slide show of all the old pics. Saturday was a picnic and nice dinner/dance that night. Of course, somewhere in there, we toured the old & new high schools, took more pics, saw old teachers, and re-signed yearbooks.

So, while I initially didn't want to go, I left feeling soooo glad I went.

And btw, in the invite letter that went out, it was stated something like, "This is not a career contest or seeing who's fat or bald. Leave that crap at the door." But ya know, that wasn't really necessary because when I looked at everyone, I saw them as I remembered them. In fact, we stayed so busy reminiscing & remembering details that it was as if we were still there in school.

Ah, that totally explains your previous post. The worst ever. I went to an all-guys school, but it's just a different feeling. Maybe cuz there's no chicks to show off for or something and adolescent teen girls are just natural bitches for the most part

I think it all makes sense to me now  I know exactly what kind of school you are talking about, and I would probably feel the same way! I was happy to go from that kind of school to a small public school in the middle of 7th grade. Best decision my parents ever made for me I think!!
