OT - 5 groups that you would recommend to a friend

I was thinking...Thee have been numerous threads that intended on introducing a band, or a song....we've all posted youtube clips of favorite performances....etc.

But if you had to suggest FIVE, and only five performers, or bands that you would hope people would follow through and check out, what would they be, and here's the catch....you have to explain why you are suggesting them.....and what exactly makes them mention-worthy.

Hopefully people contribute.....I know a few who will. I'm going to defer my list til a bit later. Enjoy!

Colin James I can't mention him enough. With every release he alters his sound a little. He has played everything from Blues Rock, to traditional blues, New Swing (like Brian Setzer), traditional R&B vibe, you name it. And stellar guitar work throughout.

Henry Lee Summer Written off as a one-hit wonder in the late 80's with "I Wish I Had A Girl" but listen to some of his later work. This is the kind of music I dig the most, that barroom boogie-woogie R&B 12 bar blues kind of music. Basically just straight-ahead rock. And he has some really good 'story-telling' lyrics.

Tony Harnell From his work with TNT spanning 80's metal to 00's modern melodic metal to other projects such as Starbeaker and Westworld, a phenominal vocalist!

I really struggle with lists. I am not the type to be able to give 'top 10 horror flicks' or 'top 10 favorite albums' or anything. There are other artists that truly desreve recognition for their talents such as those we discuss here like JSS (Red List and Beautiful Mess are INCREDIBLE) and Kevin Chalfant. But when it comes to saying 'You gotta check this out' it always hits me in the moment but not when I am trying to think about it. Maybe I will come back and add 2 more later....

My only group I recommend to all (the other four on this list would vary according to audience or person):

Porcupine Tree. They have a truly original vibe and sound, that has been present through their transformation from an experimental electronica band, through their modern incarnation as a prog/alternative band. Very skilled musicians all, the songs and concepts they present are interesting and this band has yet to get old to me. Throw Tool, Coldplay, Muse, Radiohead, Dream Theater, Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam, Marillion, Journey circa 1975, Pink Floyd, and the Killers into a blender.... and you get Porcupine Tree.

Wow. What a great sound...got a real hot webby feel to it. I think you're right about the Robert Plant thing...maybe Lou Gramm too. Interesting. This could be what Zep would have sounded like if they were an 80s band.

Enchant - Hailing from Concord, Ca, Enchant has quite the local(Ca) following. With Ted Leonard on Vocals, and Doug Ott on guitar, they've managed to carve out quite the little niche for themselves in progressive circles....Ted's voice reminds me of a young Steve Walsh. Doug playing is very etheral and seasoned.

And here's one where Doug's playing shines.....

Harem Scarem - What can I say about HS? This band is quite melodic, reaching down deep for that catchy hook, delivered awesomely by Harry Hess, and Pete Lesperence. Harry's vocals are spot on for this type music, while Pete's playing is a great compliment to Harry's voice....I like the whole package this band presents...They started off well with their first 2 releases: Self-titled, and Mood Swings....got experimental with the next few. Then came back with a vengeance with Weight of the World, Human Nature, and Overload.

Danger Danger - 1991-1993. Ted Poley and Co. Doesn't get any better than this folks. Nothing earthshattering. Just straight party music, with sexual innuendo. Favorite Albums: Self-titled, Screw It!, and Cockroach

HOLY CRAP! I thought I was the only person on Earth who owned that CD. I LOVE that disc. Check out Highway 9's CD "What in Samhill". It's the Mr. Reality guys with a not so acoustic feel. Not as good, but still a good album.

Great list, Dave. Always liked Colin James stuff. And very cool to see Henry Lee Summer on there, LOL I think me and Larry are the only ones who've ever mentioned him. Crazy bugger, but I totally dug his voice and music......loved I Wish I Had A Girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rezwyQvigWs and Darlin Danielle Don't. Kinda had that cool smokey rasp that EM has. Going to have to have a listen of some of his later work. Not sure if I've ever heard anything from Tony Harnell before.

HLS has run into some trouble lately with a DUI. And he hasn't recorded anything for a while. But he plays almost every night of the week in his hometown and plays a huge New Year's Eve show every year. I wish I could head out to Indiana sometime just to check him out. I LOVE "Danielle Don't" as well as "Hands On The Radio" and all of the debut really. His 2nd CD was okay, but a little more "pop" sopunding". His 3rd "Way Past Midnight" is good but I really like his 4th one "Slamdunk". (or maybe I have those backwards, I'm tired). Next came "Smoke & Mirrors" which changes the sound a little. I think he recorded this one himself at home. Finally he has "Big Drum" which was done with one of the bands he performs with in Indiana. A very different sound. The first time I listened to that CD it did nothing for me. But I pulled it out later and I just sorta "got it".
