I don't believe this.

One of the most iconic buildings in the world will soon have a new name. Sears Tower, at one point the tallest skyscraper on earth, will be known as Willis Tower starting this summer.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Willis Group Holdings, a London-based insurance broker, didn't have to pay anything for the name. After consolidating its area offices to the Tower, Willis was given naming rights to the 36-year-old skyscraper. It was a package deal, of sorts. According to the Tribune, Willis is hoping its newest venture increases the company's name recognition in the United States. Apparently, it's a big player across the pond, but few Yanks know anything about it.

As if anybody (here) will start calling it something else. It's the Sears Tower.

I hate when they change building names. It's worse with the Stadiums, Arenas, etc. We had the iconic "Mile High" here in Denver for 30+ years. A new building is built (much needed) and the corporation investing most in it has to have their name on it. So now we have "Invesco Field at Mile High". Pepsi Center? Coors Field? C'mon. But at least those were new buildings. Renaming an icon? What would it be like if the Empire State Building were to be renamed Nabisco Tower?

aw relax....you know what memory I have of Sears is?

Mom used to take me down there each august to get school clothes. What did I end up with? Nerd clothes. Keds on my feet, only back in those days Keds werent cool. Cheap ass jeans. Girls laughed at me, boys chucked empty soda cans at me on the bus. Im still completely fucked up in the head over this, so fucked up I run around kicking over the neighbors geranium pots and digging up their daffodils at night to amuse myself.

My next memory of sears was in mid life... seeing my fast food guzzling, beer chugging overweight uncle working there on minimum wage selling tyres in the car care center, trying to support 4 kids. Another nice impression of Sears.

I dont know , I might have an unfair negative impression, and yes I know it wasnt named after the gard-damn store, but some how I dont think that is the impression Id want of the Chicago most famous building if I was a Chicagoean. :!: :!:

Relax my friend you're making progress here.

"willis" just doesn't have the soul and legacy sound of "sears tower".

it might be good but it's not great!

only time will tell if this will eventually be accepted by the sears loons.

jk!

Well, if you Chicogoans would actually buy the fucking newspaper, rather than thieve scores and news online from other sources, this wouldn't happen.

Printed news, like terrestrial radio, is all but dead now.

It will always be known as the Sears Tower. Other buildings downtown have been renamed...for years and they are still called the original names.

DNA, you beat me to the Watchin' You Talkin' About Willis line.

This ranks right up there with the attempt to rename The Navy Annex to 'FOB #2'.
Catchy, ain't it?

Until they implode it to revert the land to Arlington National, it will be the Navy Annex, regardless of which agencies/services it houses.

Oh wait, showing my 'slimey' colors, aren't I?

Sorry, can't help it.

I'm old enough that I still call the Allstate Arena the Horizon. They can change the name all they want. It will never be anything but the Sears Tower to me.

I still call it that too.

And of course "The World". I never called it Tweeter and I'm sure as heck not going to call it First Midwest Shitty Sound Can't See Anything Bank Music Theater, or whatever its technical name is now.

The Sears Tower has nothing to do with Sears & Roebuck. They sold the building 15 years ago and haven't held offices there since. And the naming rights expired awhile go... its just that until now no one had the stupid ass idea to actually change the name.

The odd thing is that Sears hasn't been anywhere near the "Sears Tower" since 1992, so I'm not sure how their name has managed to hang around for this long. I'm with Dave...All of these dopey names are annoying and fucking confusing. The naming rights on sports stadiums are for an agreed upon contractual length of time and then some other deep pocket corporation comes along and pays a gazillion dollars for "naming rights". Everyone outside of the city thinks it's another new arena, when in reality, it's the same old dump with a new sign out front!
