Gideon, I'm genuinely interested. You have clearly spent a lot of time listing to Journey music and have formed some clear opinions about SP's vocals. I was wondering other than Perry who else you would rate, any era, and for what reason. who are your top 5 vocalists?

Jim Morrison - possibly the most influential rock star of all time..and he could sing. Check out Crystal ship

I tried to narrow it down to 5, but just can't! Here's my top 10 singers (minus Perry of course), and they're in no particular order.


1. Lou Gramm-until 7 or 8 years ago. The whole situation makes me very sad! I still love him though.

2. Phil Collins-still a freaking amazing singer! The guys a MONSTER on stage.

3. Jimi Jamison-any album except Survivor's last album! He still has it too! Freaking awesome! I'm listening to his "Crosswords Moment" album right now, and I'm amazed at how awesome his voice still sounds!:wink:

4. David Coverdale- his last "Whitesnake" album is my favorite new album of last year. That album kicks ASS over anything else that's been released in the last few years IMHO.

5. Peter Gabriel- awesome showman, and you'd have a hard time not liking him live!

6. Richard Marx- really just his older stuff.

7. Paul Stanley- still amazes me to this day! The stage was MADE for Paul.

8. Sammy Hagar-Daivd who? JUST kidding, I like a lot of David's stuff too, but I liked Sammy's Halen a little better.

9. Steve Lukather- kickass singer AND guitarist...need I say more?

10. Joey Tempest- All Europe albums up until their hiatus. Don't care for the two new albums. Why try to fix something that isn't broken? DAMN...just go back to that 80's sound that you were good at. I'm sick of bands like this playing drop-key guitars trying to "fit in" with todays bands. If I liked or wanted "new" music, I'd listen to Korn or some other shitty band!

You are SERIOUSLY smoking crack! I really liked the first Storm album, but Gramm is miles above ANYTHING Chalfant was a part of. Gramm has (okay, HAD) more soul, power and conviction in his vocals than nearly any singer we've ever heard. I think in his day, he was just as good as Perry. Of course opinions are like assholes...

I have 3 teenaged boys, and they wouldn't be caught dead listening to "old folks" music. It's the latest hiphop and gangsta pop for them.

no, they each have ipods , and I'm secluded in my room with my SP/Journey cds and dvds.

chris cornell - soul crushing emotion (when he's not doing that hip-hop crap with timbaland)

Steve Perry because he emotes and I feel his pain
John Farnham rich voice, oversings but is such a good showman it becomes enjoyable
Johnny Mathis smooth as butter, boot knockin type of sound
George Michael clear as a bell, angelic voice
Bruce Dickinson also clear as a bell, but with a voice as strong as Lucifer's

Steve Perry - voice has such soul, he soars, his vibrato is wonderful and listening to him stirs my soul. His voice touches me. His voice is very, very special. He is number one for me.

Ella Fitzgerald - just when you think she has hit a note and that's it, she pulls more out of the bag and takes it further. Her tone is beautiful and rich. Very stylish singer. She makes the Cole Porter songs all her own.

Karen Carpenter - deep, rich like melted chocolate. Fabulous voice.

Sinatra - his tone is so lovely. And I just love those songs he made famous. They are in a class all of their own.

George Michael - its the purity of his voice which I love. He soars, and sounds so clear and beautiful. The production on his albums is also wonderful.


I also love Lou Gramm, Peggy Lee, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Annie Lennox, Matt Munro, Dusty Springfield, Glen Hughes, David Coverdale, Jimi Jameson and I think Whitney Houston had an incredible voice. Not sure what she sounds like now tho.

Agree with most of them. Would replace Stanley, Hagar and Tempest with Richard Page, Eric Martin and Michael McDonald.

Other than Perry, in no particular order:

1) Lisa Gerrard - totally unique and otherwordly
2) Freddie Mercury - vocal acrobatics and amazing control
3) Jeff Buckley - ethereal
4) Rob Halford - power and range
5) George Michael - smooth and pure

I'm no music expert either so I'm not sure I can describe why, but . . .

1) Steve Perry - voice makes my toes curl
2) Burton Cummings - powerful emotional, and above all, unique
3) Michael Hutchence - not usually recognized for his voice, underrated vocalist I think. The man could sing.
4) Eva Cassidy/Sarah MacLachlan - voice(s) of an angel
5) Freddie Mercury - see no. 1

Honorable mention - George Michael, Frank Sinatra, Etta James, Elvis, Chuck Negron, Engelbert Humperdinck . And the master - Luciano Pavarotti.

2) Amy Lee - haunting, ethereal
3) Annie Haslam - one of the first vocalists to every knock me off my feet. She was my muse.
4) James Hetfield - his power -- I never get tired of it
5) Chester Bennington - If you've ever heard him sing stuff other than Linkin Park, you'd understand. That boy is amazing.

I have to agree with cyndy on Karen Carpenter, she had such a beautiful voice.......clear haunting.

I also like strong sweet singing.......

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it's her because I've listened to Enya. This was a tape/record a friend got from the library at least 15 years ago and I don't think it was a best seller type of thing. However, her voice was pure to me...I still hear some songs from it in my head.

And some would shoot me and I'm sure make some nasty cracks about it; however, I've always enjoyed Boy George's voice.
