Just got back from Journey concert in Manila......

Postby elirose » Sun Mar 15, 2009 3:13 am

I arrived at the concert venue 7pm but concert started around 8:30pm. There were a lot of entrance/exit gates so it was a breeze getting in. There were 3 big screens in front (with the biggest one on stage, smaller on the sides) and 2 screens in the middle sides.

There were still a lot of empty seats when I arrived but when the concert started there were already a lot of people. I don't know if it was sold out since i am not that tall, i cant see the entire venue. Also i was not able to tell if all seats were taken because many people went to the railings or sides to stand up. Before the concert started, it was announced that they were filming for a DVD.

I don't really know how to give a technical review like if Arnel was on pitch all the time or how the sound was or if there were wrong keys played but they sounded great to me . I will leave that to others who were there to give their technical reviews. But i was just soo excited because this is my first "rock" concert. Here are some of the songs i remembered:

- From Revelation:
After all these years
Change for the Better
Where did I lose your Love
What I Needed
Turn Down the World Tonight
Wildest Dreams
Never Walk Away

- Then:

Open Arms
Faithfully
Edge of the Blade
LIghts
Be Good to your self
WITS
Separate Ways
Stone In Love
Touching, Loving, S
When YOu Love a Woman

- Sung by Dean:
Mother Father
Keep On Running - (not sure if this is the correct title)

-There was solo by Neal and harmonica solo by Jon

My attention was most of the time on the stage and the people around me. Also most people in my area were singing along and they were very loud. But i really super duper enjoyed the concert. I'm glad i went even if i was alone because i really enjoyed it.

Sometimes people would sit like in some ballads. But they were responsive when journey would encourage them to participate. But i ended up standing all through out the concert and was dancing. The songs i wrote above were based from what i can remember. They played around 2 hours and probably more than 20 songs.

By the way I saw Rip because he knew some people seated in my area and he dropped by. But he was actually seated near the font center probably 4th row and was shown on screen a couple of times.

Ok i need to get may late dinner and rest my feet :D

Thanks for the info. Glad you had a good time. They played a lot from Revelation, that's great. I hope they do that when the get back to the US. I hope to catch a show this summer. :)
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Nice post. Don't worry about the 'technical analysis' of the show/performance. I think that gets over done here a little.

As long as you had fun, and it sounds like you did.

Easily Arnel's best show so far. He came through big time. New arrangements, 25 song set lists and they're supporting Revelation. The future is very bright.

Plenty of info over at his sight. I think I've heard almost every song. He was just on fire. NOTHING is tuned down...NOTHING. Nailed every song with ease. It's all there for everyone to hear. This guy is just one hell of a singer. He was so strong at the end of the show it seems like he could have sung all night. Wait, he pretty much did! Hats off to the man. He delievered in his backyard in front of his family, friends and country. He should be every proud of himself. He kicked major ass.

Doubt it. He hadn't in the previous recordings.

IMO the only song worth anything on that CD is Like A Sunshower. The rest - more meaningless drivel.

I liked LaS, but for some reason I always skip it for CFtB.

Thanks for the review. And thanks for confirming that this show is going to show up on DVD. One question though: What do you think the attendance was? I had heard that ticket sales were lagging leading up to the show.

I'm hoping that the directors of the DVD remember that there are five people in the band, and it's not just the "Arnel Pineda Live DVD." I'm sure it'll be fine, though.

I don't think that will be a problem. Journey's management will be mixing the DVD.

I'd say 30 to 40 thousand. Totally unofficial. I'm just guessing about that amount from the shots of the crowd. Chicago had 26k last year and it seemed like Manila had more.

Unfortunately, ticket prices were not within reach for a lot of Filipinos. People on AP's site think that number is 60-70k, with total capacity of 100k.

I thought the venue was set up for 32k. I'm thinking 20 to 25k attended.

That's seating capacity, I'm told. The venue can be expanded to 100K

The E-Heads crowd was incredibly huge. They had to have 70k easily. Estimates were right around 100k for them. Journey had well more than 20 to 25k from the shots I saw.
