Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)
by: MICK BURGESS - 2009-2-27 22:8:31

MB: Just before I wind up, I’ve heard you’ve been working with Steve Perry recently. What’s been happening there? Will there be anything released? How’s he sounding?

NB: Yeah, we’ve worked on some things. We get together once in a while, we’re friends and he was at the last Extreme show in LA. I’ve been trying to get him to put that record out he’s been working on.

He’s definitely working on stuff. At some point I’m going to have to break into his house and take it and put it onto the Internet.

He’s such a super talent and I just love his singing. He’s one of my favourites and I keep telling him that he needs to be back here, people need to hear him sing. He’s Portuguese you know. He’s one of the few people I can speak Portuguese with.

That's cool.

For the record, though, I don't think anyone here doubted that Perry was "working on stuff" as Nuno put it, but they doubted whether or not he would release it to the public. And Nuno seems to have serious doubts that he will, judging from the mock jest to break into Perry's house and put it on the Internet.

Well...

I just think it's "coincidental" that Mr. Bettencourt states such a thing....

...and then Steve shows up out-of-the-blue in AZ....for Manny's Dodger thing.

Hmmmm...... 8)

Honestly, not to emulate SJ here, but the only reason I can think of for him to not release the material he's been working on is insecurity. I won't dispute whether or not the man can still sing, but I think we can all agree that it won't be as technically astounding nor as easy as it used to be. I have no doubt that his voice is still pleasant and full of that emotive quality, but I do believe Perry operates under the mindset that if he can't do it like the '70s, he can't do it at all.

It's a pity.

In a lot of ways, I prefer FtLoSM to ST. Vocally, he allowed himself to return to some of his higher register and sustained notes that he was famous for in the '70s with enough grit, soul, and "fat" sounds from the late '80s.

The problem is just the selection of the songs. I mean, holy shit, talk about depressing. Made me want to cut my wrists. Definitely could have used some Lost Angels, Let Go, and Somebody Somewhere.

I don't see (or suspect) any connection. The guy has got to leave his house sometime. I think it's interesting that this is the second such mention this year already...hmmm... 8) 8) Is something afoot?

I think another factor would be in who will release it. Does he go back to Sony or put it out there himself. I think he should do a spot on American Idol and let them do a mini EP release for him. If it fails, no major finacial harm done.

[rant]I hate American Idol due to the fact that they dramatize so much of the bullshit. These retarded folks who, early on, go to audition purely for attention. And you see the reactions of the judges and the predictable "lol u can't sing!!1!"

No shit. They're on there purely for attention and you just fell into their trap. Fucking idiots. There should be pre-auditions for the auditions to weed out the attention seekers.[/rant]

That said, the Perry and Journey connections are too thick on that show to ignore. There should be a Journey day (as Queen had one) where they have to sing Journey songs. Or, failing that, have Perry guest star. And as far as financial harm is concerned, I think the nostalgia factor of "holy shit it's Steve Perry's first album in over a decade!!1!" would be enough to sell albums.

From Nuno's comment of "I've been trying to get him to put that record out he's been working on" sounds like there might be some hesitation and
reluctance on Perry's part to release it even though it might be done. I wonder if he is concerned about how it will be received by his fans and critics? I say, if he is
happy with the songs he's produced, he shouldn't be concerned about anything. I for one, would just be happy that he is doing what he loves to do once again. :D
People do want to just hear from him, just to hear him sing, and he can speak Portuguese to me anytime he wants........ :D

...or...there's always the Walmart/Best Buy etc., route. Didn't Prince sign to release his next three CD in a deal with one of those stores? I'm not sure SMFP has fond memories of Sony.

Or at least throw in a cover of the Partridge Family's "Come on Get Happy". Something.

SP isn't Prince. His status as rockhermit hasn't made his marketabilty go up at all. Exclusives are for multiplatium artists that might have one last hurrah in them. I know Street Talk was 2x platinum but that's where his track record ends. I don't think Perry can generate the numbers they need on that first week of release to increase store foot traffic enormously.

Perhaps the 10+ years that have gone by since Perry's Last release have been healing to him.
Perhaps he has been restored and now has something to say. He has said that he expresses himself through his songs.

May we discover through pain and torment,
the strength to live with grace and humor.
May we discover through doubt and anguish,
the strength to live with dignity and hope.
May we discover through suffering and fear,
the strength to move toward healing.
May it come to pass that we be restored to health and to vigor.
May Life grant us wellness of body, spirit, and mind.
And if this cannot be so, may we find in this transformation and passage
moments of meaning, opportunities for love
and the deep and gracious calm that comes
when we allow ourselves to move on.

I get what you are saying, but lest you think Journey would increase walk ins more so than Steve Perry, I want what you are smoking. Steve Perry will bring in many more to Walmart than Revelations did. I can promise you Perry will sell a lot more than 500K units. A little advertising and oh yeah, a radio friendly song, that gets 3 weeks of spins on radio, and it's bye bye revelations...left in the dust.

I won't get my hopes up until they announce a release date. This talk of Nuno recording with Steve Perry has gone on for almost two years now:

Nuno Bettencourt writing new music with Steve Perry
posted by Jas, 05/31/2007

According to the Post Chronicle Nuno Bettencourt is currently writing new material with Steve Perry. The Boston Herald recently had an interview with Nuno where he mentioned that he's working with Steve.

A meeting of such different minds is a very L.A. thing, said Bettencourt, who now makes his home there. "People don't discriminate out here," he said. "No one thinks, 'Oh, I can't work with him because he's pop or he's alternative.' People are really up for these eclectic combinations out here." Bettencourt should know - he's pushing the eclectic envelope. Between making the Satellite Party record and touring it, he's writing songs with Steve Perry of Journey.

"I'm now telling people I'll only work with people named Perry," said Bettencourt with a laugh. As two of the few guys in rock of Portuguese descent, they've been friends since Perry cold-called him rambling in Portuguese. "That's the way it is out here. One day you're working with Perry Farrell, the next you're working with Steve Perry."
