Steve Perry would have been with them?

I know, the topic is worn - but I'm just curious. Journey made about $45-million in ticket sales during 2008 with Arnel singing (I believe that was total ticket sales with Heart and Cheap Trick on the ticket). If they made that much with a very good Perry-soundalike, how much more would they have made if Perry had toured with them? $100-million? $150-million? Would it have been as big as The Police reunion? Would ticket sales rely on Perry's voice being able to hit the high notes? Would they need a high profile touring partner to increase ticket sales?

What are the stipulations? Are you talking about ideally, if Perry-in-his-prime were back fronting them?

If not, I think it would have been even bigger initially (particularly because of his name) but then if he couldn't sing it spectacularly, it would suffer.

Well, honestly, we have nothing to compare it to. From the pro-Perry camp, you have heard people claim that he's "still got the Voice!!1!" but these reports haven't been substantiated. From what we have actually heard, Perry's voice is withering. Still carries a beautiful soulful tone, but he's lost unimaginable amounts of range and power. The last real recording of Perry singing an entire song was '98's "I Stand Alone."

Do you think ticket sales would sell out before the first show started? If so, the condition of Perry's voice probably wouldn't be a factor in ticket sales. If that was the case, any increase in ticket sales would have to rely completely on Perry's popularity as an artist.

That's a good point. They might sell out 99% of their shows, if not all of them. The difference is -- if Perry's voice is not up to par -- the audience will be walking away unhappy. At least, I believe so.

AH Hell! I think it would have been one of the biggest ever and I could slap myself for saying this but I wouldn't care if he used tapes, just to be able to see him rule that stage alone would be worth the price of my front row ticket and to see Schon bowing down would double my ticket price easy!!!

But would Schon be bowing down if Perry weren't doing that well?

I think he would be bowing down because concerts would be sold out even before they got to the stage and we all know what lengths Schon will go to for the $$$$ although I have to admit I love to see him playing that guitar!

I don't think so. They had quite a few sold out shows this year with large crowds. Honestly, given the bad blood between those two, I don't think Neal would ever bow before Perry.

Actually, it's got facts to back it up. Perry quit the ROR tour, quit the FTLOSM tour and backed out of the TBF tour. Hardly a cop out answer, sir.

DRL wasn't a vocal juggernaut like SP was. I'm telling you, people tend to have higher standards for great singers.

Anyone seen Eddie Money lately? He just can't sing his own songs any more. He talks through the lyrics. His backup singers sing them. He lets the audience sing. It's just PAINFUL. This notion that as long as its the original guy and the original songs, all is well, is wrongheaded ...

I like Eddie Money, but I'd be the first to admit that he didn't seem like he had a long career ahead of him as far as his voice is concerned. He reminded me so much of Hewey Lewis (anyone else hear the similarities?). Decent singer with a lot of soul, but extremely limited otherwise. Loved "Shakin'" and "It's Gotta Be Love."

What I failed to add was that I think it is all his insecurities that stop him from touring....and that is just plain SAD.

I don't care, there are millions of Perry loons out here and even if he sounded like total shit which I don't believe he would, we would all go home a bunch of happy campers, just sayin.

Well, in that case, I want to change my answer!!!

I stopped it at $200-million because i didn't think it would go bigger than that. The Police grossed $171-million in 2007, so I think it would be on par with that. Now, if Journey had never toured without Perry - I believe it could have gone $250-million or even more for a year-long world tour with Perry at the helm.

Bruce made 156 Million. So you Journey fans are saying Journey would be a bigger draw than E Street band?


Bruce did it touring with no opening act. Journey had two acts opening for them, , and made 1/4th of what Bruce and band did.

Now I know I am wasting my time here.

not all loons have such low standards. i would be disappointed if any of my favorite musicians expected their fans to be happy with shit.

Apples and oranges anyhoo -- it's all a function of numbers of shows, ticket prices, and venue sizes. Some of these acts did relatively few shows and others did extended tours.
