Doesn't matter if the plot ended happily, just looking for movies powerful enough that it affected you if only for the time of watching.

A couple I can think of:

Leaving Las Vegas

The Elephant Man

and this one's a maybe 'cause it was so weird I don't think I undertood what it even meant, Eraserhead.

Just watched it last week actually. Quite depressing but the ending like you said was very good.

Glengarry Glen Ross, based on a David Mamet play. Jack Lemmon deserved an Oscar for his performance.

Shadowlands, based on the true story of C.S. Lewis' love affair with an American poet. I've seen it probably ten times and I cry every time.

Born On The Fourth Of July, Tom Crusie. Extremely depressing but great movie, and one of Tom Cruise's best performances.

That was a great flick, not sure depressing but riveting. Reminds me of another.

In The Company of Men

Jack Lemmon's character and what was happening to him was so depressing. My stomach was in knots watching his desperation.

You're right, its been so long I'd forgotten a lot of it. You've reminded me of a couple scenes.

I've got a big heart and that movie just KILLS me.

I'll also list Ghost. The ending of that is emotional enough. And then I just saw it a couple days ago and was thinking about one of my favorite actors of all time, Mr. Patrick Swayze and his current situation. Tough for me to take and I was just losing it over and over again.

Maybe I'm just an emotional wuss, I don't know. But movies like this bring out the tissues for me.

Boy's Don't Cry, yeah, that was a hell of a movie thanks to Hillary Swank. One of those you don't even want to rewatch even if its a good movie.

Her other one, Million Dollar Baby just pissed me off. I wanted to crawl into the screen and take out the other boxer.

A DeNiro classic. Maybe my 2nd fave DeNiro after Taxi Driver. He was scary as hell in that one.

Heard it was a remake, wait, maybe you mean the original? Oh well, I liked the DeNiro one.

The remake of "On the beach".

When the Aussie officer (Grant Bowler) realises it's time and lays down on the bed with his wife and daughter, it is just devastating.

Runner ups are:

The mist

28 days later (the alternate ending that was shown in Europe)
