Anybody here had Lasik?

I probably wear glasses and contacts 50-50, all depends on my mood. Don't like to wear contacts for extended periods of time, too uncomfortable, and glasses are a pain in the ass, especially for sports and gym and even just tryin to lay down and watch TV. I don't really care how I look wearing glasses, but it sure would be nice to not bother with glasses or contacts any more. Anyone had Lasik? If so, how was and is it? Now I know everyone's got a brother, sister, spouse, or friend who has done it and loves it, but I wanna hear first-hand accounts only please!

I had Lasik about 4 years ago. I'm due for my annual exam in April. I'm one of only 4 people out of this particular office to read 20/10. I'm thoroughly satisfied with it. No problem with it at all. You will live on eye drops 24/7 for about the first 2 weeks because your eyes will feel very dry. Doctor told me that when the cornea is cut, you lose 50% of your tear production. But after it heals, it's back to normal. The need for eye drops gets less & less as time goes by and in about 4-6 months you will not need them any more. The cost was $3300 and worth every penny.
Get ready for the smell of eyeballs burning....smells like burning hair.

Ehwmatt split, dude. He saw "anal exam" and is looking for 24 hour Lasik offices.

That's pretty much my experience with it also, having had it in 2003. Ken didn't mention it (and I guess it is possible that they have changed it), but I had to wear what amounted to foam suction cups with tape over my eyes for the first few days after surgery at night while I was sleeping. That was a little strange and disorienting in the morning and I was VERY happy once I could just sleep normally and not have to deal with those things anymore.
The eyedrops thing is annoying for a while (your eyes will dry out simply because of going outside into a breezy day), but you do get used to putting the drops in, and by 6 months, you'll be back to normal. As much trouble as I had with contacts, it was worth the effort. No more worries about having to put contacts in, and take them out, and worry about them getting dry and falling out, or dry eyes because you can't ride with the window down in the car, etc.
I'm one of the apparently very small minority who experienced excruciating pain during the surgery itself, but no side effects whatsoever afterward, and I'm sitting about 20/15. For playing sports, and just the simple case of making your life easier, it's well worth the money.

I had lasik almost 5 years ago (at age 24, in case that matters). Best thing I ever did.
The surgery is a little uncomfortable simply because they have to keep your eyelids open for the 8 or so minutes it takes, but other than that, it was actually quite painless. You go in a couple times and they do all kinds of tests and scans and whatnot, so basically the whole thing is mapped out before they do the surgery, and it's fairly automated.
Your eyes take about 2 weeks to adjust and after that it's like you've had 20/20 vision all your life. Amazing.

Mine took all of 6 hours to adjust. I was told to keep my eyes closed and go home to a dark room and sleep, which I did. I had mine done at 10am and was home by 11 and in bed. I got up at 6pm, looked accross the room at the alarm clock which I could see perfectly for the first time. I got up, went out to the hallway, looked out the window and could see everything perfectly. I was truly amazed. I went out to the bar that night and didn't even have the little halo's that the doc said I may have for a few weeks.
The only uncomfortable part of the procedure was when they had to push down on the eye to immobilize it so they could zap it, and then the smell of burning flesh. It took 3 seconds for my right eye and 6-7 seconds for my left. I had 20/30 in both eyes before the procedure. I went in the next morning for a followup eye exam and had 20/20.
As I said, money well spent. I was sick to death of contacts, squinting, glasses and all the bullshit associated with my job, carrying a gun and having 20/20 corrected vision per NRC recgulations, annual eye exams, etc... Not a problem since

I had it done about 10 years ago. Best money I've ever spent. I pretty much wore contacts til my eyelids developed an allergic reaction to the protein buildup that occurs on the contacts. I'd immediately get bumps on the insides of my eyelids and would blink the contacts out.
Right when they sat me up after the procedure. I could already see an improvement.

If I could, I would do LASIK in an instant.

Have you had an exam to see if you are a candidate for Lasik? Not everyone can have it, for a variety of reasons. I found that out firsthand and was really disappointed, since I'd made up my mind I was ready to have it done.

I had it done about 9 years ago. Having worn glasses since 4th grade, suffering through Kurt Rambis looking athletic glasses playing football and basketball, wearing pretty much bottle cap lenses as of late...it was like a miracle.
I saw 20/20 the next day and even played a round of golf.
Thing that sucks is now I'm getting old and have to use reading glasses. They warned me of that. I think they can fix that now as well.

Same here. My vision was HORRIBLE, but I haven't had any problems in the 3 years since I had it. The first few months, I had some spots at night, which is normal, and my eyes are a bit more sensitive to light then they used to be, which is also normal. Nothing a good pair of sun glasses don't cure.
BEST $3,000 I ever spent!!

I had PRK (not Lasik, wasn't a candidate for that) almost 2 years ago. Procedure itself did not hurt, but my dumb eye doctor here removed one of the bandage lenses too soon, and then the pain started. The first week was HELL! - and no, putting a bag of frozen peas over your eyes doesn't help. My healing took a little longer than expected - I thought I would be back to work in a week and ended up having to take 3.5 weeks off - I couldn't see well enough to drive - mostly double vision. But after that things gradually got better, and now I can say I have absolutely no regrets! My eyes do get quite dry still if I ignore the signs and don't put drops in when I should, but overall very pleased.
My biggest issue with the whole thing is the promise of 'instant clear vision, back to work in days, etc etc'. That just isn't the case for everyone, and then you end up thinking something is really wrong when it really is just 'normal' healing for some people. I found a wonderful forum where people share their experiences, good and bad, and was able to determine in the first week that I what I was experiencing was not totally abnormal. Again - 2 years later - no regrets. I love not having to worry about contacts or glasses.

My wife had it done and went from terrible vision to 20-15 in days. If you live in Upstate NY there is a place called Lasik MD that is MUCH cheaper than anywhere else. It is in Syracuse (Liverpool).

I am definitely a candidate. Thanks for all the insights people, I figured there had to be some people here. I'm really torn about doing it.

Well that makes two of us, curious about the procedure. As an artist I hate to have to wear glasses, and dispise that even with them I struggle to see clearly sometimes. I used to be blessed with 20/15 in both eyes as a child.
Question: Do you guys know if they will do it with a stigmatism? I am wearing bifocals now. I really hate them. I only started wearing glasses about 2 years ago. But if I can get employed as a teacher, I might be looking into that for the future. I am not one who likes to watch things like this........can't they knock you out?

Once they slice your eyeball open with the cheese grater thingy

everything goes to a total blur. Your eyeball is totally numb and you can't feel any pain. You have to stare at a red dot for as long as it takes to zap your eyeball. (less than a minute). As your eyeball is being zapped, it sounds like a popcorn popper and smells like burned hair. When it's finished, this robot voice says "procedure complete".

How do you stay still for them to slice the eyeball!

I really want to get it done someday. I morn my eyesight loss more and more every day. Now mine is not so bad that I cannot see without my glasses. But even with them I struggle to see the details I used to. Thanks for the info. It is scary when you are talking about your sight. I think it would be devistating to me to loose my sight.......

They put this plastic guide in your eye to keep you from blinking. Other than that, you just lay still and stare at the dot. My doctor gave me the option of taking valium but I turned it down.
