I'm not a good one to ask. My entire office was locked up with a nasty one yesterday. Just got up and going this afternoon... two days shot and $1,500 later. What really sucked is that it was too cold and wet to golf.

I don't think you'll find any really good ones that are truly free (most of them scan for free and then make you pay to disinfect).

I have heard some people boast about using Free AVG from this website:

http://free.avg.com

I don't know anyone personally who really likes it. I'd check some reviews before I used it if I were you. There seem to be a lot of people complaining about it slowing down their computers:

http://www.google.com/search?complete=1 ... e+avg+slow

I've had great luck with Spyware Doctor from this website:

www.PCtools.com

It costs $29 per year, but you can use it on multiple PC's. It doesn't slow your computer down as bad as most of them do. I don't like Norton or McAfee because they try to take over your entire computer, eating up so many resources that the PC crawls like a turtle.

I haven't used any anti-virus software in the past six years since I purchased Spyware Doctor. It seems to catch everything.

Yes, I was just talking to my office IT guy yesterday who was helping me with my work laptop and I asked him about it for my home PC. He says he uses AVG and that it works great, it's free and it doesn't slow down your computer like Norton or McAfee. Good Luck!

I use Avast personally. It's more old-school AV but it offers a ton of protection for a free product, and does a better job of detecting e-mail viruses than any other. I've tried a few back to back. The design of AV programs in general is changing with things like Vipre and the new NAV (which is supposed to be much lighter and faster -- as much as 74% smaller). I guess Symantec realized everyone hated them and had to take action.

AVG is excellent. I have had no problems whatsoever whilst using it. Any virus or Trojans it kills them instantly as long as you regularly update it.

the two best are avast like rip said and AVG.i already put AVG on my computer last night but i'd like to try avast too and compare them.

i have a question.when these viruses go to a vault it then ask you if you want to empty the vault.when you empty the vault where do these viruses go to? are they discarded for good?

I use AVG, too. Pretty good. For some reason, though, I was about to say AIG...

The only thing you have to do is register it. I've had it for a few years. You'll have to register it within 30 or 90 days, can't remember, then yearly after that. They'll email you the registration code. I've never received any other email from them and they have never spammed my email address. I'll continue using it for as long as they offer it. It updates daily, sometimes twice a day. Great software.

You might get search results for things like XP AntiVirus '09... LOL. Avoid that stuff like the plague. Lots of malware masquerading as legit antivirus software, and it's engineered towards fraud and ID theft.

McAfee will definitely slug your PC down. At least Symantec totally stripped down their product, but I haven't tested it yet. A shame they only come around to doing that once their customers start revolting and they lose revenue.

Neal on the left-hand side, AP on the right, each in front of the flags of their countries, and President Donald Maynard Dokken in the center. Guaranteed to stop any virus or worm dead it its tracks before it infects your PC.
