Billy Bob Thornton clashes with CBC radio host
Billy Bob Thornton behaved bizarrely on Jian Gomeshi's CBC radio show Studio Q show yesterday. It was…wow. Has the whole world gone Joaquin Phoenix?

Billy and his band, The Boxmasters, were on the show to promote their latest album but things got all weird, apparently because Jian referred to Billy Bob as an "Oscar winning actor" rather than simply a musician.

Thornton's publicist told CNN he "simply elected not to engage with the interviewer because of the direction of the interview from the outset," and that Thornton took the reference to his movie career as an insult to his musical endeavor.

Let's be honest Billy, very few people know your band. Nobody cares about your band. Walk into Loblaws and say to anyone "Hey! Hear that new Boxmasters record?" They won't know what you're talking about. The only reason you're getting any recognition is because you're an actor.

Billy Bob got belligerent and argumentative, made bizarre non-sequiturs and had a really difficult time understanding the simplest of questions while his band members sat by looking like they wanted to crawl under a rock. (Hey, dudes, you're the ones who joined a band with him.) It doesn't look like chemically induced behavior – he looks sober. Has he gone off the rails?

I saw this. What a pompous asshole. That guy has a mean streak in him. You can see it in this interview.

Pretty much. I understand wanting to be recognized for the musical effort, and not have the focus be on the acting thing, but jeez... there are better ways to handle it.

It's true though... he's getting recognition for it because of his acting career. You would think he would use the advantage of being known to help his band, if not for himself, then certainly for the good of the band and the other members. And again, there are better ways to handle it.

I've seen many interviews with Kevin Bacon and his brother about the musical aspect of his life and of course the acting thing comes up, because that's how he's best known, and he's chill about it, and the topic moves on to the music. It doesn't need to be a big deal.

Got some old mutual friends around Little Rock who said he always wanted to be a singer/songwriter. Acting just happened while he was pursuing that. I guess he thinks now that his music is probably better than it really is, thus, the attitude. Dunno, just a guess.

I don't think he started out as a weird f'r. I think the money & fame, not to mention that trailer-trash Jolie chick, caused him to weird out. Whenever he's around here, I hear he's just one of the good ole boys.

Interesting.

Billy Bob Thornton's band cancels Canadian tour

This guy is out to lunch.

TORONTO (AP) - Billy Bob Thornton's band has canceled the rest of its Canadian tour after the actor compared the country's fans to mashed potatoes with no gravy in a testy interview that caused a sensation online.

The Boxmasters opened for Willie Nelson on Thursday in Toronto, where they reportedly were booed and met with catcalls of "Here comes the gravy."

A note posted on Nelson's Web site Friday said the Boxmasters were canceling the rest of their Canadian dates "due to one band member and several of the crew having the flu."

The cancellation came two days after Thornton made world headlines with a belligerent appearance on CBC radio's "Q."

The actor apparently didn't like that host Jian Ghomeshi started the interview with references to Thornton's Hollywood career.

Thornton refused to answer many of Ghomeshi's questions directly, mumbling: "I don't know what you're talking about." He later said Ghomeshi's producers had been told ahead of time not to talk about his film career.

Thornton also had some unkind words for Canadian crowds.

"Canadian audiences seem to be very reserved," he told Ghomeshi. "We tend to play places where people throw things at each other. Here, they just sort of sit there. And it doesn't matter what you say to 'em. ... It's mashed potatoes but no gravy."

Before his Thursday night gig, Thornton tried to clarify those remarks, saying he loved Canada and his "mashed potatoes" comment had been aimed at Ghomeshi.

Media around the world delighted in the story. Entertainment Weekly's Web site ran the headline, "Billy Bob Thornton: What's his problem?"

The guy's an actor and a pretty good one if it involves weird characters. He's bland as himself.

He's obviously doing a bit ala Joaquin Phoenix for the publicity. The question is will it help or hurt the band?
