Before cable came along, I remember watching the Phillies on Channel 17 on my little black and white TV as a kid, listening to Harry with Richie Ashburn.. Richie went a while back and now it's Harry's turn. RIP my man.

One of the very best. I was really saddned when I heard this today. Really makes them winning the world series last year even cooler, though. At least he was able to announce that.

Actually, is this even OT? Didn't he narrate the Frontiers+Beyond DVD?

Just watched yesterday's game with him in fine syrupy voice...replaying it on CSN now in Philly of course...
Favorite signature call is of course pitcher-centric, "'EEEEeeeee STRUCK 'EEEEEEMMMM RIGHT ON OUTA THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
RIP

They say these things happen in 3's:
Kalas' voice was like no other...what a huge loss to the sports world.
The Bird died today too (I'm guessing that's what's in Maui Tom's link)...he was a hero of mine when I was younger.
Finally, death has not only struck the baseball world today, the great Marilyn Chambers has left us.

This is a terrible day, not only for Philadelphia sports, but sports in general. Harry the K was in a class by himself...only Vin Scully or Jack Buck come close. Not to mention his voice over work on "Inside the NFL".
R.I.P.

Sad indeed......never heard of Ms. Chambers, but she was so young!!!

I'm heartbroken over this. So sad. He was the voice of my summer youth.

Nope that was John Facenda.
Facenda was also a Philly broadcast legend. Damn, what a booming voice he had.

For all of us Philly People old enough to remember...visualize this and keep Harry in your hearts:
You are young, sitting on the sofa early 70's, the heat is pretty much unbearable, A/C is a futuristic idea, there you are sticking to the plastic covers on the furniture, dozing in the the heat but listening to By Saam, Richie Ashburn and Harry the K. I can still remember days like that and always will. I will keep that in my memory and never lose sight of how I grew up with Harry the K. RIP

As a long time Pittsburgh Pirate fan who lives in NE PA where the Phillies and Yankees get most of the media attention it was always fun and a pleasure to hear Harry's voice call the Pirate games when the two teams were playing. He was the best at his profession and this is a huge loss for the world of sports. RIP Harry Kalas

Harry Kalas Tribute Video Somehow Narrated By Harry Kalas
PHILADELPHIA—In what fans are calling a touching and entirely fitting tribute to the Philadelphia icon, the Phillies released a farewell video of Harry Kalas Monday narrated by Kalas himself. "In Philadelphia, they'll tell you that if Harry Kalas said it, it must be true," Kalas' distinctive voice can be heard saying over a montage of great Kalas moments, including his first day as a Phillies broadcaster and both Phillies World Series victories. "His honeyed old-leather-and-bourbon baritone was spring and summer to generations of baseball fans. We'll miss his voice, but not as much as we'll miss the man. So, one last time, we say: Long drive...watch that baby...outta here. Home run, Harry Kalas." The Phillies declined comment on the video itself, saying only that choosing Kalas to narrate the labor of love was a "no-brainer" and that no other voice would do Kalas' legend justice.

Harry and Whitey are probably upstairs calling a game between the Angels and Devils right now.
