NBC announced this morning that legendary NFL broadcaster John Madden is retiring after nearly 30 years on television.
The former Oakland Raiders head coach has worked for all four of the major broadcast networks, most recently with NBC, where he called Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa earlier this year.
"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not ..." Madden said in a statement.
He added that "it's been such a great ride ... the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is."
"I still love every part of it - the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people ... but I know this is the right time."
Madden is the recipient of 16 Sports analyst/personality Emmy Awards and the American Sportscasters Association named him sportscaster of the year twice, in 1985 and 1992.
Longtime broadcast partner Al Michaels said Madden will have a unique place in pro football history.
"No one has made the sport more interesting, more relevant and more enjoyable to watch and listen to than John," Michaels said in a statement. "There's never been anyone like him and he's been the gold standard for analysts for almost three decades."
He also gave his name to what is the best-selling video game franchise of all time, EA Sports' "Madden NFL Football," which has sold more than 65 million copies since its first edition was released more than 20 years ago.
During his Super Bowl visit to Tampa, he said that he personally supervises the development of the video game.
Prior to joining the broadcasting ranks, Madden had a Hall of Fame head coaching career with the Oakland Raiders.
He guided the Raiders to an overall record of 103-32-7 and his .750 winning percentage remains the best in NFL history. He led the Raiders to a victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI. In 2006, Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
A linebacker coach when he began his NFL coaching career with Oakland in 1967, Madden became the head coach in 1969 at age 33, the youngest head coach in the American Football League. Madden retired in 1979 and started his broadcasting career that same year.

Being an Eagles fan I hated him as a player but I think Troy Aikman is the best football analyst out there.

I wouldn't go that far, but Aikman is pretty good. I also like Collinsworth and think he should get the gig.

For some reason, Collinsworth reminds of a preppy (the guys with the little alligator logo on their shirt). I used to hate those dudes when I was in high school.

My brother-in-law met Collinsworth at the airport and he said he couldn't be nicer. They chatted about the Ravens (Collinsworth LOVES them) and he seems really down to earth.

I can understand why the legendary John Madden is stepping down after decades of being the voice of all of football. But, replacing him with that TWAT Collinsworth? WHY?! This guy does nothing but annoy the complete living SHIT out of the fans and looks like a bird as much as he sounds like one. Bad move to replace a legend with a mamas boy queer ball.
On another note, the analyst I enjoy listening to is Ron Jaworski. I think he has a proper breakdown of the game and gives the audience football intelligence and presents his voice really, really well to the viewers.

Collinsworth is far from a mamas boy queer. He's got a super hot wife and 2 or 3 kids he lives for.
2 minute mark...the bomb...#80 is Collinsworth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nnPsoTY ... PL&index=3I watched this dude play alot of good football.
I'm glad he has a 'hot wife and kids' to live for, and was indeed a receiver, average at best, in the NFL. But that's not what we're talking about. He spews a lot of bullshit out of his mouth and sounds like a whiny, often times one-sided, goon who often cries and makes garbage comments on what's actually taken place in front of him. Collinsworth is CollinsWORTHLESS in the booth.

I'm sure he is a good husband and father, but he HATES the Steelers, and he lets EVERYONE know it. I would prefer a color man to be a bit more neutral. I guess he never got over getting smacked around by Donnie Shell and Mel Blount his rookie year.
