At least this is Journey news.

I thought this would happen since there is no longer a show to promote in Manila. I never cared for him singing to playback tapes of the band anyway so this doesn't bother me in the least. I don't know where they're getting this second rate performance crap from. The Manila show was the only one they didn't tune down on so far this year.

AP needs a PR person for these kind of interviews.

American members of popular rock band “Journey” have prohibited Filipino front man Arnel Pineda from singing the group’s original songs in his solo gigs in the Philippines.

Pineda made this confirmation to abs-cbnNEWS.com in a phone interview but he was quick to add that his band mates only want to keep the “sacredness” of “Journey” songs.

“Kasi mag-isa ako. So, kapag wala sila ay nawawala ‘yong sacredness ng kanta kapag hindi mo sila kasamang kumakanta,” Pineda explained.

The Filipino singer denied rumors that his American band mates had barred him from singing the group’s hits without them after he allegedly bungled some of the “Journey” songs in one of his performances.

Pineda’s alleged second-rate performance in Manila was purportedly uploaded on video-sharing Web site YouTube.

“No, no that’s not true. Walang ganoon,” Pineda stressed.

Formed in 1973, “Journey” is behind powerful ballads such as "Don't Stop Believing," "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Open Arms," "Send Her My Love," "Separate Ways," "Wheel in the Sky," "Who's Crying Now," "Stone In Love," and "Lights."

The band had changed its lead vocalist several times, most popular of whom was Steve Perry. Pineda was discovered in 2007 by member Neal Schon (guitar, background vocals) via YouTube.

The rest of the band members are Ross Valory (bass guitar, background vocals), Jonathan Cain(keyboard, background vocals), and Deen Castronovo (vocals, drums, percussion).

Meanwhile, Pineda disclosed that he is set to leave Manila in June to prepare for “Journey’s” upcoming United States concert tour, which will kick off in July.

The singer said he will be away for at least four months.

GB, they're not referring to the Manila concert. They're referring to one of the Manila TV performances of Arnel singing Journey songs without the band that were uploaded to YouTube and that were second rate. That's the way I took it anyway. Hence, no more Journey songs alone. They're probably grabbing that "second rate performance" from YouTube remarks. Not exactly what I would call journalism. :roll:

I come here now only when I want a good laugh, and thanks to Neal Schon and Jon Cain for that. Sacredness of Journey songs? Where was this spiel when they were miming along(Cain included , <Every Generation>), to once proud and revered songs? LOL, the ridiculousness that surrounded and now has permeated this once great band is definitely present and grand in scale.

If I were Pineda, I would tell them to go fuck themselves and see who the one holding the cards would be. They wouldn't be able to ply a fucking note without him, unless they wanted to tour behind their first three stellar albums, Next, Journey and whatever the fuck the other one was called. :roll:

I think this youtube stuff is what got him in trouble in the first place. Everything he does goes straight to video. The tale of the tape will be if these Philippine TV shows still want him to perform if Journey material is not on the setlist.

I personally don't care what Friga does with his own asshole, but that guy lip synced his Every Generation song every time out. He has no right to ever use the fucking word, "sacred."

In retrospect however, I am glad he lipped it, because I definitely do not want to hear him sing live, even though every time he did "sing" it, I was deep into taking a piss. That was the cue, if you could hold on until Friga's song, I will race you to the head and we'll piss and meet up at the mini bar on the way back.

I don't know. My thinking is I think they allowed it to promote the concert. That's done. So I'm sure they don't want him appearing as a solo artist singing Journey songs on stage without the live backing of the band and, like you said, those clips being uploaded all over the internet. If they weren't doing the Asian tour, they probably would have clamped down on it after they saw Arnel singing their songs on TV over there wasn't translating to selling Revelation in the Philippines.

The concept of someone who can't really sing anyway, lipping to tape, just officially blew my mind.

I'm sure these TV shows will want him there even though he won't be doing any of the Journey material. AP's a star now and that in itself is reason enough to get him on the shows, people want to see him regardless of what he sings or does.

If Pineda had any brains whatsoever, and that's real debatable, he would hire some serious, good playing musicians and do his thing. Journey, if they were smart, and that is a oxymoron unto itself, would let him do his Journey/solo tour. Anything promoting their music would be pure gravy, but alas, you have two entities, neither of which have any brains at all, hence the clusterfuck. One year in the Pineda era and they are already having major problems. Folks, this news should never ever come out for the public eye to see, read or witness. They have a problem on their hands and are attempting to cover up something. Those of you who can read between the lines will read it, the other half of you will rely on Cain and Schon to tell you everything is peachy.

Or, Deano, the ones like me that figure they allowed Arnel to sing all he wanted in the Phils leading up to the Manila concert, having not played there before and Arnel really wasn't that big yet, to ensure publicity and a successful concert. After that, no need and it doesn't help Journey. He can just sing other music and still develop a following for his tours with Journey. And an interviewer asked him about that, probably because he declined to sing a Journey song somewhere and he heard about it, and Arnel explained why. No big deal.

You say he should be singing Journey songs without them, but, yet, when those clips were posted here, Arnel was criticized by many MR'ers and so was the band about what a joke. Even many on Arnel's fansite didn't like it that he was singing Journey songs alone at times and considered it lackluster without the band. I think they were smart to utilize the TV shows leading up to their Asian tour, and now Arnel doesn't need to sing Journey songs alone on stage with no live music or those duets he was doing. I never liked him peforming Journey songs without the band. He can take a breather on their time off and give his all to Journey when they crank back up for touring. If he keeps up all these side appearances before the tour and then is burned out vocally after months on the road with Journey, what good does that do Journey or himself?

Hold on now..... AP singing Journey tunes in the Philippines isn't about making AP more famous or anything like that. For those of you who's not been in the Philippines singing in a band (like I have), one thing you must understand and that is when people see you there, they want you to sing the songs that they've seen you sing on stage with your band. AP's doing it to make the Journey fans happy. During the year I was there from 94' to 95' I can't tell you how many times I'd be walking down the street and people who saw the show I sang in, would come running over from across the street and beg me to sing one of the songs that we did on stage. Regardless of how I felt they would expect me to do it. If I turned them down, they'd label me is snoby and stuck up. There were so many times I was sad because my girlfriend was dying of cancer and needed to take a walk. People would run up to me and ask me to sing and I had to act happy and sing for them. I began to only go out at night when it was dark so people wouldn't recognize me and I could avoid this.

So AP isn't doing anything to get more famous or take credit on his own. Whatever he's doing, he's just doing it to make fans happy. It's very important not to come off snoby or stuck up over there. He's avoiding it by making them happy on demand. Filipino society is a very excited culture. They are just very excited to see him and he's excited to make them happy. I went through it, I know exactly what he's going through. Hope you can relate to what I'm saying.

I think a fair compromise would be to allow him to sing the songs that he has album credits on... namely, the Revelation songs.

I recalled the story about when AP was in the immigration office in 2007 and they requested that he sing a Journey tune as they were handling his visa and passport. I thought that was a pretty cool story and alot of others on here thought so too. That was just the begining too. That was before he was officially Journey's vocalist. One can only imagine what would happen after he's got the gig.
