Better hook up with Itunes if you are trying to make some money with out all the heavy duty touring. Counting album sales is going to go out the window as more people just download individual tracks.

Royalty revenues went up 16 percent however which is good news for older artists who might be relying on that income instead of putting out new releases.

If there's a favored artist that puts out something new AND it's relatively easy/reasonably priced (i.e. not paying $25+ for a 10-track CD from Japan/Euro) to attain the hard copy, I will. Otherwise it's iTunes all the way.

On Itunes, for a 99 cents download, 70% of it goes back to the Publisher/ artist, etc. Apple doesn't mind losing money on downloads as it's just a vehicle to to get you to buy an Ipod.

Some companies have pulled music from Itunes because they don't want the album to be sold as individual tracks. Analysts say that this sometimes backfires as people who just wanted one song originally on Itunes, may turn around and download the whole album illegally rather then purchase the CD.

Until bands start putting out decent CDs....I'm all about downloading from P2P sites.....I'm tired of buying a CD only to have 2 good songs out of 12....and don't get me started on the whole European/Japanese Bonus track add 15$ to the cost of the Cd thing....Not paying $35 for ONE added track....again, I'll get it from WinMX.

People underestimate my sense of charity.

After the SuperBowl, Sony's version of DSB made a little jump back up the Itunes chart. If Revelation had been available on Itunes also, I think it could have gotten a second wind from the publicity.

Labels can take one single and have it on Itunes, displayed on the front page, if they ante up a little bit of money. I think this might have been one of those moments where Journey should have taken a chance but Walmart might have had the final word and declined anyway.

I think when we finish our album, we may look at actually going the digital route. Initially, it'll probably be the only form it's released in. It's funny you started this thread, because we were just talking about this yesterday. Guess we'll see once we finish talks with a couple of the labels. It's definitely a different market out there today than it was a few years ago!

Walmart is great for groups that put out albums infrequently and are looking for that one big payday. The follow up album is an issue though because people will be expecting you to have the same success but without the mechanism of a global merchandising Giant behind you. Itunes maybe help in softening the potential impact of now having all the marketing and promotion pressed back upon yourself.

Your going from a three CD set back to potentially a one disc album for the same price. A little bit of price shock there.

Yep, I may be showing my age here a little bit, but I remember back in the day when a music listener could purchase a thing called a "single", a 45, if you will. That's one copy of one song, purchased all nice and legal and everybody got paid accordingly. If an artist released an album and it had more than one decent tune on it, then the music listener had the option of purchasing the album, or purchasing additional singles off the album as they were released. IMHO the record industry shot itself in the foot when they took away the consumers ability to purchase one copy of one song. For a while there, in order to get one song consumers had to purchase the entire CD, no matter how crappy the rest of it was.

Enter the digital age. Well, guess what? The free market works! Now consumers are again able to obtain a single copy of songs (legally or illegally) and the record companies were nearly shut out of the game. All this crying about falling sales is falling on deaf ears as far as I'm concerned. Their lost revenues, global economic down-turn notwithstanding, is their own fault.

Maybe another reason sales are down is because so much of what's being sold out in the marketplace is mediocre, uninspired, souless crap. Rock has gotten stale and boring, Rap & Hip Hop seems to be the same old stuff. Country for the most part has become commercial and pop. Music today is not about the artist and artistic expression it's about packaging a product. Do you think that Janis Joplin for example could have ever gotten a record deal today. Hell no, she's not pretty and doesn't have a hot body. What about Roy Orbison. Do you honestly think a guy who looked the way he did would ever get a record deal today? No way.

A lot of it is 'cause hip hop / rap is so prevalent and these artists aren't very creative with few exceptions. Country has been pop influencel since the mid 90s.

But good artists will still stand out. Artists have more opportunities to get know than ever before. They're not dependent on radio anymore.

Joplin who's a legend, absolutely would get known. Roy Orbison too, example Clay Aiken's a goofy looking dude and he did ok for a while.

Not all modern music is bad, just most of it.
