Are You a Perry Loon?

We've all heard the term "Perry Loon" on this forum many times... so much so that it will probably have its own Wikipedia definition by the end of 2009. But what I want to know is if you are a Perry Loon yourself?
I guess we first need to establish just WTF a "Perry Loon" is to begin with. My understanding of a "Perry Loon" is someone who is so infatuated with Steve Perry's singing that you tend to defend him whenever people bash, belittle, or criticize him. Perry Loons can usually be spotted pretty easily. They will commonly have a picture of Perry in their avatar or a reference to him in their username. Some of the more extreme Perry Loons may even have pictures of Perry disguised as a pimp hugging a young hottie in their avatar.
So let's separate the wheat from the chaff. Are you a Perry Loon? For those of you who answer "yes" to this poll, are you a closet Perry Loon, or are you open about your addiction? Feel free to comment.

I guess I have become one. I thought the fucker was gay when I saw him MTV for the first time singing Lights/Stay awhile with that blue blouse. When I started posting here I used to bash on him, more to balance out the anti-AP sentiment that was happening. Once Arnel got established though, I grew tired of it. I went back and revisited ROR and TBF, two albums that I initially hated and started to actually appreciate them more.
I saw Perry with Journey four times, twice on the Escape tour and twice on the Frontiers tour. That particular line up will always be my Journey, regardless if they were all assholes or not. I don't think he walks on water and still think he's a few pennies short of a dollar but he is still THE VOICE as far as I'm concerned. Original is better in my universe.
Ten years on, you open Revelation and look at the credits for Disc two, You see Perry's name all over it, even though the dude has been out of the band for over a decade. That alone validates the guy as the Sound of Journey.

I used to be a loon, back when there was reason to be, but I found I could quit anytime.

I am a loon and don't care he will all ways be journey to me.That being said i still love the old line up.I got to see them 3 times and will never forget it.I have been to manny concerts but journey left you wanting more.I don't think Steve, is perfect or can walk on water. Not sure if we will have new music from him but it would be nice.I would be there in ling to buy it.As long as he is happy living his life then fine.He gave everything to his music heart and soul.

Don't know if I'm a loon or not???
I know he's not perfect - who is.
But I think his voice is the best in this genre. I think it has a magical quality.
I close my eyes and drift away when I listen. Well, not when I'm driving, of course!
I never knew what he looked like until the 'Oh Sherrie' video was shown on Top of The Pops in the UK. I only had the Escape album with those pictures on the album inlay and they weren't really clear, so I didn't know what any of them looked like.
I thought Steve was a Native American when I got a look at him. And I thought that video was really naff, but I still loved him despite the naffness.
I don't think Journey isn't Journey without him, because I think of Journey as Neal's band, really, but I do think they were at their best when Steve was in the band.
I think he brought something really special to the table.
But I also think that the divine blend of the special ingredient he brought and what Neal and Jonathan brought to the mix is what created the magic of that period.
And I like to eat turkey.
So does that make me a loon?

I, love SP's mad vocal skills, this is true but I also have the highest respect for NS's fire guitar skills; in my mind's eye they are equally admired so I'm undecided.

I consider Perry to be my number one favorite singer of all time with his body of work. But I'm no loon. I oonsider a loon (my definition) to be a mother hen cluckin' everytime one critical thing is mentioned on here and wants only praise and pining and lusting (by some) for him and talking endlessly for years when will he be back. Nope, not me. I was excited to hear he finally may release a new CD but have been disappointed in his behavior as of late re the total secrecy. So I'm over all that and will wait and when he decides to announce he's putting out a new CD or touring, then I will be excited. I just play my Journey CDs ad nauseum and consider myself a fan of a singer who hasn't performed live with Journey for 22 years except the one time for the memorial, and hasn't played live solo for almost 13 years. If Journey wasn't still around for all these years performing I would not be on a fan board of Journey. It would be in the past and I would just listen to the music.
So let me introduce myself. Hi, I'm Jana, I'm no loon, but an admiring Steve Perry fan and an avid Journey fan.

I don't know?!?!? I don't think there is a definitive answer,
for me.
He
is my favorite "VOICE" with or without Journey. However, I don't have a
false perception of reality...the man is not perfect, his voice
is!!!
I am not angry at him, I'm not a stalker and I don't think he owes
me anything...I
would like to hear this new music!!!! Do you have to be
a loon to be a fan?!?!?
Susie-Q summed it up perfectly!!!

Yeah I think I qualify for the loon card....As I have said for me it's the voice of Journey...
but I don't think that he walks on water and can do no wrong...there is plenty of blame for them all. So I guess I am a frustrated loon. It is not easy to wait and wait for something new, although I will continue to wait.
The AP thing has soured me on Journey.....the re-records (and I know that is what Walmart wanted) make me sad....as a Perry fan.
Anyway a loon is a beautiful bird in my parts, so I am good with the title!

I think he's incredible, or used to be. (that's not a slam, just haven't heard him recently enough to know if he still has it), but I know he's flawed like every other human being and I don't think everything he's done is perfect, by any means.
I'm objective about EVERY singer, being a singer myself. I can praise them or criticize them with no worship or malice intended, just as I can myself.
I do believe Steve Perry has lost any confidence he might have once had due to the his voice and the inevitable wear and tear of years gone by.
I do wish he'd at least perform a couple of songs, (if he still can) and give us fans a treat.
BUT, if he can't sing anymore and just sounds horrible no matter what he tries, it's probably best he didn't sing in public again.

I'm guessing it was either rockingdeano, saint john, or stevew.
I think some are taking this thread too seriously... it's meant as somewhat of a joke. But we loons are not afraid to admit our weaknesses for anything Perry-related.
Just yesterday I found myself wanting to go into Best Buy to see if Perry released any new material. But I got ahold of myself and came here for support instead. I know if I just work the steps I can find freedom from this addiction.

I guess I'm a loon. I have no desire to meet Steve Perry or enter into any of the other crazy things some loons do. But I simply feel that Mr. Perrys voice and stage presence defines Journey. I have never seen Steve, or Journey in concert, but if Mr Perry ever does go on some kind of a tour, you can bet I will be there.

God grant me the serenity
To accept the fact that Steve Perry may never perform again;
The courage to accept the latest Journey singer;
And the wisdom to know the difference.

No offence meant to anyone - this is just a bit of fun -
Hail Perry, fair of face.
Our thoughts are of thee.
Blessed art thou among singers,
and blessed is the fruit of thy vocal chords,
Your voice.
Fabulous Perry, Voice of voices,
pray for us sinners,
now and every hour, ‘cause we all need help.
Amen.

lora & i were reminiscing with herbie herbert a few weeks ago. he told his wife that lora & i would take a bullet for steve. it's true. we would take a bullet for any one of our friends. does that make us loons? are we disqualified because we don't have sp-related avs or sigs?

For me, the definition of "loon" is anybody who is an OTT fan of a celebrity or artist or whatever. For example, a "loon" would be a fan who attempts to get the death certificate of the mother of one specific lead singer, who shall remain nameless, just to see what the mom died of. Or pretends the singer is a bar of soap, and the fans describe what they did with the soap. That is Loon Personified for me. So the name fits certain fans. Not somebody who genuinely likes Steve Perry as a singer. Or any other celebrity or artist for their particular talent. Huge difference there.

Well then I guess I am out too,
afterall I was shocked and saddened about the crap I read on the GQ blog that was written by I guess you would call them loons, I don't want to be put in the same classification...I am a fan of the music.....the stuff you describe makes me want to vomit at best.
So I take it back, I am not a loon just a very big fan...and I too would take a bullet for alot of my old friends as well. I think they would for me too.

In my time here on the board, I don't perceive the definition of a 'loon' as what you describe, Yak. I'm a self-professed loon, but I'm certainly not any of those things. I put SP up on a pedestal because of the way he moves me with his voice. When I watch him sing, there's something about him that transcends other performers. It's used a lot here, but the word 'emote' is the best way I can describe what I mean. He does it like no other. It's not just his voice, we hear his soul in some of the songs.
Is he fallible? Sure, we all are. Did he screw up a lot with regard to the band? Perhaps. But there is no other performing artist in history that moves me the way he does. I oooh and awww over him in lots of his pictures, but that's just silly girl stuff (and we know it drives the guys here crazy). No one will
ever come close to touching me with a voice the way SP does, and that's why I consider myself a loon. Just a somewhat sensible one.

A definition of a male loon is Madsplash.

It's in the dictionary. I checked.
