Okay, I submit that we use this area to do "what's the deal with...?" posts about stuff that you just can't figure out or bugs you.

Rules: No digs at fellow Mr'ers. Past, present, and future singers of Journey are left out of the topic. Let's see how long that'll last....

Ok...

What's the Deal With...
Skulls on every piece of clothing that you can buy now? Wanted to buy some nice dress shirts for my musician gigs. Something nice and 'cool' and that looks good. Everywhere I go, there are Skulls or Crosses all over the shirts and they want a ton of dough for this crap.
Same with hats, pants, etc.

What's the deal with that? Has America got some kind of subliminal death wish or something?
Someone explain it to me....

Yes, skulls are cool.

IF YOU'RE 13, but dang, I'm a bit older...

McGoth ...

Counter culture symbols get picked up by the capitalist marketing machine.

My sons (early 20s) have a "no skulls" policy (they think it's lame), and it makes it really challenging to buy them shirts. As you say, anything that is sufficiently cool has a skull on it somewhere.

Good for them! Well, yeah, it just seems so negative to me. "McGoth" great term.
I get what you mean about 'musician gig, yer 13 again', but I just can't buy into the skull thing.
I don't wanna show up in some Golf Shirt or something either, but the skulls just make me look like I'm trying to be 13 or something.

I guess I could get one of those striped golf shirts that hang down to my knees and a sideways ball cap... yo!

Shop mannequins that are thinner than real human beings can actually be. I've got a friend working in a clothes shop, and they have to safety pin a pleat in the back of the smallest sizes made to make the clothes fit the mannequins...

Ads for mobile phone ringtones that give you a price, then in the fine print say "may cost more if calling from a mobile phone." WTF? What the hell else would you be calling from? But apparently that's not false advertising, even though the real price is nowhere in the ad.

My son is 15, even has a little "garage band" he and his friends formed (of course they only play for themselves so far  ) , and he HATES the skulls and it is so hard to find him shirts that he WILL wear, I hate it!! He wants tshirts, and all the ones that have any markings on them have the stupid skulls!
