My scary-ass shark encounter this weekend!!!

Hey everyone,

I HAD to come in here and tell you about my experience at Myrtle beach this weekend. Friday my wife, my son, my nephew and I headed to the beach for the weekend. We got there around lunch time, and decided to go to the beach. I like to boogey-board, so when we got there I went out looking for some waves. I was out there for a little over an hour (and had caught some really decent waves), and I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A second later, a fin appeared out of the water about 8 or 9 feet right in front of me! It was a 5-6 foot shark, and it was literally between me and the beach, just kinda swimming in place!!! It turned on it's side, and it's side fin came all the way out of the water (keep in mind, I could have almost reached out and touched this thing!). I could clearly see it's gills and light colored underbelly eliminating the possibility of a dolphin. It then turned towards me and dove, almost like it was circling behind me.

I"VE NEVER MOVED SO FUCKING FAST IN MY LIFE!!! I say again... I hauled ASS through that water (by the way, have you ever tried to run in water over waist deep? ), and my wife was wondering why I looked the way I did when I got to the beach. Needless to say, I was texting everybody I knew while I was sitting there on the beach catching my composure (Deano got a text ), and my hands were shaking so damn bad that I kept fucking up the words!

That was something that I'll NEVER forget as long as I live. I was nervous as hell, but I spent the entire next day in the water catching waves. It was a blast! I did see 2 other sharks, but they were much further away. One was probably 8 to 10 feet long, and it jumped all the way out of the water chasing a fish. The funny thing was, I was talking to another guy out there who was swimming next to me about my encounter the previous day RIGHT when it jumped. That thing made a loud splash as it came back down, and was one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I think it scared the SHIT out of him, as he didn't stay out there long after that.

I also talked to a couple of old guys right after that, and they said they saw 4 sharks right up next to the beach and they were apparently chasing some school of fish. I always knew that they are right there in the area, but that shit is a little freaky to see close up. I guess I had statistics on my side. Not to mention...it'd have to be a big-ass shark to mistake ME for some food.

He just wanted a little nibble Jim. That reminds me of the time I was out in a jellyfish swarm. They were all over the place, one got me on the back of the leg and it felt like a high voltage electrical jolt, I was practically walking on water trying to avoid them getting back to the beach. Glad you're ok.

Shark has a pungent taste to it , never liked it, now swordfish thats a great tasting fish.

do you know what type of shark? jumped out of water? sounds like they could have been white sharks... if it was only 5-6 feet it was just a baby... woudn't have attacked you. how awesome! my hubby used to surf off san onofre here in socal... the white sharks use that area as a nursery... the sharks swim around surfers waiting for waves. the media makes such a big deal about it every summer... surfers think nothing of it... i think it's awesome that my hubby surfed with white sharks... even if they were just babies.

New Smyrna Beach is a very nice town. I've been vacationing there every year for more than 30 years. It's too bad that the beaches took such a hit several years ago when all those hurricanes hit. They're nowhere near as nice and wide as they used to be.

New Smyrna Beach is a very nice town. I've been vacationing there every year for more than 30 years. It's too bad that the beaches took such a hit several years ago when all those hurricanes hit. They're nowhere near as nice and wide as they used to be.

I haven't been to that part of the coast yet, but our friends have every year for years. The hurricane errosion is really sad though.

I went to Panama Beach years ago and forgot about certain times of the day you shouldn't be out there. We were all out there at dusk and I was way out on a float with my arms and legs in the water. The next weekend a little boy was attacked in the same area and mangled badly and survived but I think is pretty much a vegetable. Tragic. It freaked me out.

I was raisied in Daytona Beach and my brothers surf and see sharks all the time. My brother got nipped once.

All of my family now lives in Ormond Beach. Don't worry. I've never seen any there either. They surf farther south towards the inlet.

Yeah, I know the inlet can have a lot of them! New Smyrna seems to have bites almost every year it seems, but our friends don't have a problem, so we'll see how it goes The attacks in the pan handle are scarier to me. I think those were Bull Sharks if I remember right, and they are creepy! Not that all sharks aren't!

Wow! I know exactly how you felt - jumping out of the boat and almost landing on top of a 10' great white is one the reasons I don't scuba dive any more. Bear in mind, where I was diving is where they filmed all the live action shark sequences in "Jaws". I'm telling you, I walked water to get back in the boat, and spent a good 20 minutes swearing at my instructor

Once my Dad was fishing on the south side of LI near Jones beach.
I wanted to see how far I could swim so I started in the life guard zone & swam a couple miles toward my father who was this little dot.
I swam right on the edge of the shore in say 3 or 4 foot of water just to be safe but yikes being out there all alone not knowing what lurked under the black water knowing it was just alone was a source of tension but I wanted to see if I could do it in case I was lost in the water & I could swimming on my back.
I'm great on my back...I can swim forever on my back


Most sharks don't eat people
some may be a mistake
Some are sick sharks & some get lucky & get a taste for an easy meal so they indulge
truth is most sharks don't like our taste unless we are really fat...


Seems like most sharks have white bellies...wonder what your little guy was.

Truth is they are probably out there as we swim but w don't get a chance to see them.
Bet you still feel the adrenalin from your encounter with one of the waters finest creatures.
