^ Yes, I finally found it. "Higher Place" as performed by Journey, with Deen on vocals, in March during their tour in Japan. I'm very impressed with it. It's revamped, with different keyboards and a better guitar. Much more modern. (Deen's one tradeoff is that you can't hear him as well, and particularly towards the end, this problem is more pronounced).

Very good, though.

So do I.

I bought another copy of Arrival yesterday for five bucks at Wal-Mart. Augeri was a fine vocalist. The problem was that during the songs (and concerts), he would try to do some of the ad-lib, extended vocal acrobatics that Perry and Arnel indulge in. He was a capable, smooth tenor, with a moderately strong voice. But he lacked the ability to do the truly impressive, if unnecessary, extended notes and so on.

His primary job as a vocalist was to interpret the lyrics. He did that unbelievably well. But in hindsight, I don't think he recognized his limitations as well as he should have.

I noticed he did similar things during the Firefest videos.

Me too. Definitely my fave post-Perry Journey song. Deen does a great job on it. Bought the Arrival dvd on a whim and glad I did. That's a great song and La Raza Del Sol live were worth the price right there. :) And that's when I first noticed Deen, he's just so friggin fun to watch on that dvd......just having a grand old time back there, smilin' and bopping around.

I agree, Steve did an admiral job and was a good dude to boot. That song is his, bottom line. Additionally, the clip shows how it should sound in it's original key.

Deen's vocals were always prominent on the Arrival version.
Augeri and Deen would harmonize during the bridge.
I could be wrong, but from 3:11-3:45 it sounds like Deen's voice is layered with his own Arrival background vocal.
In other words, now on lead, he is harmonizing with himself.
Either way, it's probably the best HP boot I've ever heard.
Nice find Gideon.

It sounds like Augeri is in the mix on this, or maybe i would just like to hear him sing it again.

I call bullschutt. you weren't there. he was resetting his guitar during the first 2 songs because one of the stage hands thought he was helping and "adjusted it for him". kinda freaked SA out and it took awhile to get back in the swing. read Andrew's interview.

examples please. :? here, I'll help. see mine at youtube, momflute :P

Easy, tiger. "I noticed he did the same thing during the Firefest videos." I never claimed to be there. Thankfully, God has blessed us with the mighty Youtube, where we can see and hear performances on the internet. I heard him hit painful notes during the beginning of "Wild on the Run" and I refer you to the entirety of "Chain of Love."

This version of Higher Place once again showcases Deen's inability to project what is a pretty darn great voice.

That's about right. He's got a phenomenal high register, unimaginable breath control (easily on par with Arnel or Perry on their best days), and vibrato par excellence. But no power behind his voice. Very raspy and thin.

I think it's a blessing in disguise. It makes him an ideal harmonizer and background vocalist. Perhaps one of the finest wingmen in the business.

Yeah. I like how he's not like every other modern artist out there. The ones who want to do everything; act, sing, play guitar, drums, keyboard, rather than gain noteriety for one. That's also something I respect about Neal.

bullschutt. you weren't there, my point exactly. I told you his equipment was messed up. youtube is nearly always lousy quality--mine are shot with a $200 point and shoot and I suspect most of the others are too. how can you compare that to actually being there? Can't--no way-drop it.

he was great and he most certainly CAN vocalise.

(sorry- you know how I get when people judge, compare and otherwise run others down. unnecessary always. i have my soap box-I'm on it-- deal with it.) breathe deb...

I wasn't running anyone down and I never claimed to be there.

You're forty plus years old. A grown adult. How about you act like it?

Edit: And no one said he couldn't vocalize. You didn't bother to read the damn post.

uh yea ya did.

But in hindsight, I don't think he recognized his limitations as well as he should have.

you're UNDER 40-why don't you quit acting like a know it all, entitled to judge others talents and point out supposed flaws.

stand down. there is no winning against a wiggler.
