Journey's Scandanavian Reception

Postby Saint John » Tue Jun 09, 2009 4:52 pm

It's pretty ironic (and cool) that songs like Open Arms and Faithfully went over extremely well at these rock/metal fests. I watched youtube clips from the first 2 nights and the crowds ate the ballads up. It took balls to play those songs and it paid off. Arnel and the rest of Journey sound great and Jon has The Whale back. I think it would be absolutely fucking hilarious if, for one show, he wore a "Stevew2 is gay" shirt.

What's up with the whale? What happened to the Faz? And they sucked blue donkey balls. Nothing sounded right and those square heads over there can't hold a camera worth a fuck and just when I thought I couldn't handle anymore audiance participation, it got even worse. The Asians and Hawaians sounded so much better and that's giving a lot of credit, since I was pissed then too. 8)

So far it seems the Scandanavian concert reviews are good:

"Glad to hear you enjoyed Immortal! Personally I thought they were not as good as when I saw them two years, but mostly because they were more or less repeating their routines from last time. Still a real energetic performance though.

Favs for my day and a half included Kivimetsan Druidi and Hot Leg, but the real highlight was a magical performance
from Journey. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish.

Sound problems were evident all throughout unfortunately, and indeed the weather was dreadful compared to prior SRFs. But those are the breaks.

It was great catching up with Madjock, Steve and (briefly at the Airport) Ravenheart, and meeting up with Ramone and his lot was a treat too. I'll certainly be considering doing this again if I don't go for the whole festival next year."

Another one:

"I saw Journey for the first time at Sweden Rock 2006. Three long years have passed by, and three long years have passed by as I've been longing to hear that piano intro of "Don't Stop Believin'" one more time. So when the they played it, I simply couldn't hold back the tears of joy. Incredible.

The whole show was a massive hit attack for the giant audience at the Festival stage. Arnel's voice sounded amazing and Neil played the guitar like a god.

I especially enjoyed the finishing guitar solo in "Be Good To Yourself". During "Faithfully", many grown men were crying, including myself.
It was absolutely beautiful.

The highlight of Sweden Rock 2009 for me. Thank you! "

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'm a damn keyboardist, and you won't find many people more into music than I am, but I've never cried while hearing a song in concert.  Andrew needs to add an emoticon who is knee-slapping, because that was just funny as hell.

I just picture this big group of sweaty Scandanavian men with tattoos, earings, long hair, wearing tank-tops and tennis shoes huddling together for a group hug, while crying to "Faithfully".

Weren't Vikings from Scandanavia? Now they're crying at concerts!

How could you possibly picture anything funnier than that?

Another review:

Sweden Rock Festival - by Joacim Persson, Nojes Bladet

Impressive Classic Parade
For Sweden, Rock AOR (Album-Oriented-Rock) "välfriserad" has never had to seek reparation. Celebrated bands, unconditionally, anyway. Therefore, the giant crowd in front of Journey was hardly unexpected, but still impressive. A certain "Soprano" episode has surely acquired at least some of the youngest fans to the classic parade.

California melody magicians have changed singers since last Sweden Rock-visit. And not only does the YouTube-discovered Arnel Pineda seem to have a set of genetically-manipulated vocal cords of Steve Perry; he is also more like a Journey managing director on stage than newly-recruited floor soldier.

Frontman called it right.

Just a point about Open arms and Faithfully which owners of Escape and Frontiers albums... might well notice.

Open Arms follows Mother Father, a dark song about family break up. So basically Open Arms is the sequel a last gasp desparate plea of one of the participants in the relationship ..... considering that last gasp pleas in relationships rarely get accepted, a potential song 11 (if ever written ), would refer to someone going absolutey mental, doing themselves in , or going on a rampage. Dark stuff in fact

of couse Faithfully is about being faithful to your lover over the miles...but moving onto song six of Frontiers - edge of the blade is a blast back to reality about what its really like when your partner/ lover, blah blah stabs you in the back pisses you off. Again the two song set is a a dark thing with a unhappy ending.....

So I reckon them tough Viking fans at Sweden Rock had this in mind, and had visions of blood, guts and darkness following each ballad .. they were probably thinking ... yeah ! a gallows scene is coming up just like in a Alice Cooper breaks into one of his ballads like Stephen or Only Women Bleed.... : - )

.....just a theory....

just my opiniuon

Journey concert at Sentrum Scene Monday 8 June 2009

Oceansoul: Posted: Tue Jun 09, 2009 1:34 01

I will only admit that I have just come home from one of the best concerts I've been to ever! I was 100% sober, but was very monster bashing so drunk by the vanvittig professional, beautiful and true music of Neal Schon, matching Castronovo, and the rest of the guys in Journey.

Holy ~ ... Has never ever heard before! The first time I've seen Journey live. They held the powerful punch up with 100% stability in 2 hours and 10 minutes without stopping! I am nothing but impressed by the powerful that they delivered ...

Matching Castronovo sings lead vocals and plays drums (simultaneously) and get me to gape in admiration! I play drums yourself, and know how difficult it is to play drums while singing (pretty) - Impressive, impressive ...

And then Arnel, who jumped onto the scene in his white suit! Do not just sing his amazing good, but he also has a rocket in the limb and suser constant back and forth, up and down on stage. One might think he had a kind of song / dance / martial-show where he fly around and around on stage. Absolutely admirable level of energy, and very convincing performance of the newcomer. Neal hit the nail on the head when he found Arnel on YouTube! I found out last night, shocking NOK - but true, that Arnel is 41 years old. I thought he was between 20 and 30 one or other location. I was wrong. Smile

Neal Schon. Guitar god. There's only one Neal. And the sound of his fender is so brilliant that it is almost scary. Tone tone tune it all perfect throughout the evening. That he plays from the heart and soul there is no doubt. Solo in "Be Good to Yourself" is and will be extraterrestrial delicious ... And it's so good to see a guitarist of his caliber to close your eyes, lean your head back and play merge of his guitar - while he retains the soft tones, and all the style he has! Lights for you, Neal ...

Scarce, I have seen a SO profft band playing in front of my eyes. Best band I've looked at Sentrum Scene, undoubtedly. My issue now is just that I want to see Journey live again. Any time before, than later.

Great concert yes, without doubt! Very Happy Arnel Pineda sang knallbra, and was chock full of energy! It was the almost Beatles-states at times when Filip pains all the ladies in the audience began to howl. Was also very impressed by the matching Castronovo, who also had a very good voice, combined with fantastic drum play. Really good setlist too, can not say I missed anything really.

41 years? In hell. He remains well. I thought he was around 25. Great to hear that gigen was brilliant. The concert in Sweden on Saturday was the gun. Good to have seen them even though I was not there yesterday. Wonderful band.

Yeah, and a harp jam! What else could you ask for? I do have to say though, that the set-list looks freaking awesome. If they left out "Wildest Dreams", and "Never Walk Away" out, it'd be nearly perfect.
