Tuning (Just Curious)

Hey All,
Now that the guys have started the bulk of their summer dates, have they been sticking with the tuned down versions, or have the gone back to the original keys?
Also, do you think we should expect the songs to be detuned for the American dates. As much as I want Arnel to take care of his voice, I fear that the songs will lose something being tuned down.
What do you guys know/think?

The YouTubes I've heard from Sweden and Norway do not sound tuned down. Manila was not tuned down, but Japan, Hawaii and Macau seemed to be.

I think all the shows will be tuned down. If you don't hear the difference don't worry about it. It sucks if the new stuff is tuned down too but what are you gonna do. Arnel's come into the game late and to even get two more albums out of him, the band's going to have to pull out all the stops.
Neal's probably thinking about how a 45 year old Perry sounded on that FTLOSM tour and he realises that the window is closing on Arnel rapidly.

Once you tune down, you cant go back up. My band just got a new guitar play/singer.He does it also. His vocals are so good,we hired him anyway,so we are tuning down.I dont like it either but we aint Journey. Some songs do sound shitty tuned down though. Its hard to tune down a few songs and not other songs when it come to the instruments.Journey could have down it but Friga would had a shit fit with the whale{which in glad he brought back} they should have down it with Augeri,it would have helped somewhat

That's what sucks. WIN or WDILYL will never be heard in their original key by most audiences in the US. When you think of Perry doing 600+ shows and Augeri 300+, it makes you appreciate even more the job both singers did.

No, he didn't sell the whale, he has a couple of 6 foot grand piano "Shells" that he sold with just a midi keyboard sitting inside of them. I thought about it for a second...until I realized I had no way to get it here. That and the fact that I don't have anywhere to put it once I got it!
He also sold a beautiful concert grand piano that he used in the studio. I think he sold it for something like $65,000! Very nice piano.

I don't think the Whale is back, per say. IIRC, he used it during the last European tour for Revelation. The Faz is the one he continues to use in the States.
Could be wrong, though.

I thought he keeps the Whale permanently in Europe, tucked away in storage somewhere?

Probably better than Arnel does.

I haven't heard for sure whether the US shows will be tuned down but the European dates have been. My guess is that the US shows will be detuned as well, which is why I'm not going to see them this year. Detuning kills the songs in my opinion. I know a lot of people can't tell the difference but it's a big deal to me. I just don't understand how they can claim they're running the "Legacy Sound" when they're running detuned. They never detuned for Steve Perry so why in the hell would they ever detune for a replacement singer? They sure as hell didn't for Steve Augeri.
I think a good comparison of the impact of detuning is the difference in guitar tones generated with a standard E tuned guitar and a "drop D" tuned guitar. The standard tune has a positive vib while the drop D tuned guitar has a more evil tone. Listen the difference Journey (non detuned) and Creed and you'll see what I mean. That's comparison is one string being tuned at D or E. That's a full step down on one string of six. To me Neal's playing has a very positive vibe while the drop D stuff from Creed or Nickelback has an mean or evil sound to it. It's a big deal in my opinion.
Here's an example of Separate Ways detuned in Sweden:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qYiveoo ... ated&pos=9
Here's an example of Separate Ways detuned and sang by Kevin Chalfant that's a little better sound quality:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrERN3_U ... re=related
And here's an example of Separate Ways in it's original key as intended:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQbZRMLKozk or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkgFMzSngg0
The opening of the same song has a completely different vibe to me. Have a listen of the opening bars of both and think about how it makes you feel. When I listen to the detuned version it makes me feel like it's time to fight. The original key version makes me feel a little upset and confused. The original ties much closer to the lyrics of the song while the detuned version does not convey the same message lyrically and musically. Do you know what I mean?
