Hey man I was wondering...And I guess this is for everyone too...

I know you are not down with the Pre-Cain era (Perry's vocal style).

What would be your take on those songs with Arnel singing them....Like if they decided to do
a show where they played Infinity in it's entirety?

Is it the songs you don't like? Or is it just the way Perry sang them?

Sorry I missed you when you came to town btw, next time....and the first round is on me!

I thought it was he bubble gum lyrics he wasnt down with, besides the ball crushing alto used during most of the songs.

It's the Mariah Carey singing I can do without. The music was top notch, but the lyrics and vocals, to me, sucked. While I can certainly appreciate, and be in awe of, the incredible vocal acrobatics that Perry delivered it's just not my cup of tea. Songs like Patiently, Good Morning Girl, Lights, LTS and especially Something To Hide make me wanna stick dynamite in my ears and then jump into battery acid.

Now that I'm actualy looking at the lyrics, Lets just have Neal add it's amazing solo into another song and call it good. :lol:

That's a song that would be very difficult for anyone to sing, let alone someone almost 42. Perry's very specific nuances are on that song as much as any and I don't think it's a good idea to try and recapture the vocal sound of that song. As for the song itself I think it's boring with the exception of the 2/3rds mark where it gets going a little. Honestly, I think it should have been an instrumental. Perry's vocals are amazing, but the song would have been better lyric-less. I think the poor lyrics doomed it to obscurity.

I can't agree on those. Loved him on all of those songs but -

- you're so right on Something to Hide. There's a couple of songs where Perry grates with his high piercing vocals and that's definitely one. Uncomfortable to listen to.

True, I think JC added a lot of maturity to the songwriting. I, myself, prefers the songs from Escape- on. But an awful lot of people like the Gregg Rolie 78-80 era, too. And the concert boots are manificent. I've been listening to the re-mastered Captured cd a lot lately, and boy, that music really jumps at you. I've always enjoyed Gregg's singing voice, back to the Santana days in S.F. on the radio, when I didn't know who the singer was.

I always enjoyed the MUSIC of those 3 albums first and foremost.

I know how the songs go but the lyrics were not something I concentrated on

I think I'm gonna check them out.

The Captured version of "Just The Same Way" is in my top 10 summer songs i like to jam to.

I don't know how to cogently explain my own position on the issue. For starters, I love Infinity. The vocals, the arrangements, the composition were all stellar. I detest Evolution and Departure. The music was in a state of flux and I didn't like it; the lyrics and composition sucked, in my opinion. The only one who had it right was Perry. When Jonathan joined the band, it improved immensely. Sure, there were more ballads, but the rock was also much heavier and elevated due to the fact that it had superior lyrics.

St John- I think those songs claimed a certain vocal territory for Perry . Patiently and Winds of March are incredible. There may have been another,but they served their purpose. I think Lambert could sing them but still have to wonder. Songs like those gave him the name " the voice".

I agree - Infinity, what an album. But I love Departure. Its songwriting was basic, but I don't care. The sound of Neal on Guitar with Perry's crystal, soaring vocals on Stay Awhile and I'm Cryin' and People and Places (Neal singing on that also) and Precious Time, I can't get enough of the band's sound then. And Rolie and Smith were fantastic. I listen to Departure more than I ever do Escape.

"I'm Cryin'" had some intense vocal acrobatics and fine fretwork by Neal, but I wasn't impressed. Precious Time was one of the only redeeming qualities on that album.

And I don't listen to much Escape. I listen to Frontiers and ROR much more.

st john you're weird! winds of march is beautiful- lyrically and musically. i'm a bigger fan of the earlier stuff, but i really like that album with the alien type dude on the cover :lol:

Winds Of March features some great work by Neal, but that's about it. The lyrics are terrible and the song is boring and directionless.

And, yes, I miss Santa Monica and Malibu very much. So I'm probably coming back in August. :lol:

Anybody who points to an era of the band and hates it, or despises it, or whatever, is not really a fan of the band. They are a fan of a few songs, or a few albums, or whatever. I don't care if it is pre-Perry, pre-Jonathan, post-Perry, or post Augeri, if you hote it, you are no Journey fan...a fan of something else, sure, but not Journey. What it comes down to is it is all a melting pot. It all mixes and merges and the pience becomes part of the whole. When you hate one era, you hate a part of what Journey is today, and always has been.

Captured is an ok album. Nothing like Escape or Frontiers, but still ok. The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love) is one of my favorite songs. Songs I like off of it: Majestic, Just The Same Way, Dixie Highway, Feeling That Way (but not Anytime), Wheel In The Sky (probably because the album version just sucks) and The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love).

Dude, that's one of the most rediculous things I've ever read!!! I own every Journey album ever released, and while I don't like their 1st three albums (or the Dream after Dream album), I'm one of their biggest fans EVER! I also don't like Red13 or Generations either...guess I'm not a fan either. :roll:
