Yes i'm a singer/songwriter/producer living in Zürich, one time Bay Area resident. In 1989 i recorded my first cd in Neal's Gush studios in Oakland, he himself along with Brad Gilles, & Jeff Watson of Night Ranger were kind enough to add solo's to some of my songs, naturally i'm eternally grateful and it was a life moment:-)
Marin was like that in the 80's, Uncle Charlies, New Georges, Sleeping Lady, Sweetwater, The Stone, Old Waldorf...everyone was everywhere, it was a beautiful time.
I first saw Journey at Cobo Hall Detroit in 77' i believe with Rollie & Dunbar, then many times again later in SF over 15yrs in various venues and stadiums around the bay area, the last being Oakland during the Frontiers tour, it was brilliant.
Last night was huge for me, its been more than 20yrs since i saw them last.
I absolutely agree with Neal & the promoter, for me having been here 15yrs as well now, and seeing many shows at the Volkshaus i can say with confidence that i've never seen so much love in the haus!
For weeks before the show i'd been asking my friends here if they were going, or if they knew Journey at all...no one could say they did. Thus i expected hard core fans to come from out of country for the show, and it wasn't sold out pre show... to be fair there were many Italians there, but once inside it filled to the back wall and throughout the balcony with fanatical Swiss and i could only smile, i was so proud:-)
Even more unexpected was the pre show energy inside, people whooping and whistling pre show, clearly very fired up.
Lights go down and Majestic began and my heart jumped to my throat, i was home in SF again, in my favorite car driving on the coast...Jonathan started Seperate Ways and the roof raised with screams, tears filled my eyes and i shamelessly let them flow... and so it went on song after amazing song without breaks or chit chat between, only short greetings during intros from Arnel who sang like no one else could.
I'd call it a blistering set, one song after another full throttle, epic, dynamic, emotional, soaring, very big love pouring out from the stage.
I'd have to say, for my ears, although they sang pretty much every song, it was Faithfully where i heard the most voices singing along with the most emotion.
Arnel is stunning, he goes there, and beyond, and the band felt vital & fresh, they simply rocked beyond expectations for all i'm sure.
I saw all my former label friends there, we all kept shaking our heads to each other with huge smiles saying unspokenly "thats how its done"...
I didn't manage to connect with the guys this time, but who knows maybe next year? Or maybe in the bay area, i really need to get home for a visit, they reminded me where i came from.
And they showed me how much love the swiss can give back when their given the same, i'm truely inspired.
Not much more to say, hope that works for you jhayceeh:-)
Peace & Love Mark E
This show looked like the perfect-sized venue... Majestic did sound beautiful--almost like they slowed the song down a little. Loved it.
