You all know what this is....a group who sticks strictly to the notes, inflections and other such musical stuff so much that if you close your eyes you would swear you were listening to the actual studio recording....

The best example of this that *I* have witnessed in my life is Queensryche, on the Operation Mindcrime Tour...Up until that point, I don't think I had ever seen a more technically sound band of musicians....and of course Geoff's voice was at it's pinnacle.

I know others love the opportunity of added inflections, runs....extended solos....etc. And truthfully, I've wrestled with the notion myself....However, at days' end, I've always leaned towards these 'album' sounding groups....

Anybody else have any other examples?

I'd say Britney Spears, Ashlee Simpson, any boy band, and Milli Vanilli.
But that's because they actually used the albums in concert.

I would have to respectfully say, 'no'. Lifeson is rather sloppy in concert. Neil is dead on, Geddy is close enough(sometimes)....but Alex is just, for some reason, sloppy....his playing is a bit too etheral and moody to translate well into the live setting and be 'album'....which is a shame because their catalog probably would sound the best in this way....

And I'm waiting for someone to say the J-boys....and then I'd have to laugh. Neal couldn't play one his solos note for note if he had 3 months to practice....his solos change daily....

Anyone that thinks Journey (back in the day) sounded "album" in concert needs their ears and their head examined. Departure on vinyl and Departure live barely sounded like the same material, with the live versions kicking ass and taking names.

Present day... well the Revelation stuff doesn't seem to change much on the stage and the dirty dozen all sound... you know what, I'm not gonna say it. But it's clearly not 1981 anymore.

I don't think it matters how good a band is live, it's how well they can hold an audience. If a band plays perfectly but are bloody boring to watch, I call that a bad gig. Balance is essential.

I'm the opposite. And at least 80% of it is vocals for me. Especially when it came to Journey's early material. I loved their live stuff over the studio. Perry's vocals didn't seem quite as high on the live stuff, ie., Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin is a perfect example. Almost every live performance of that wins out over the studio version for me. There is just a sexy swagger on that one live (musically and vocally) compared to studio.

And like you said, the added inflections, runs, solos are a big part of it for me. Heck, I looove all the random vocal......whoa's, yaaa's, grunts, groans, whatever. Also love the random trade-offs you don't get on cds......like vocal/bass, bass/guitar, etc. MB's Addicted to that rush is a perfect example......the guitar/bass tradeoff at the beginning is great on the studio version but nowhere near as stellar as it is LIVE. (see sig)

And I agree on Pink Floyd, I thought they sounded very much like the album too......and kinda boring. I guess you must have had to be on some psychadelic drugs or something to totally get into it.

I think the best live artist out there is Phil Collins. He sounds amazing live, and always stays true to his albums. It also doesn't hurt that he surrounds himself with world-class musicians on each tour!

He's one of the few people I've never seen on stage, and I would pay a small fortune to be able to attend one of his concerts. I really wish I could have caught the Genesis tour, but it just didn't come close enough.

I, too, would give my internal organs to see Phil in concert....although I have absolutely NO interest in hearing anything from the Gabriel years...

The Eagles come to mind... they are awesome live, but honestly, way too choreographed. Joe Walsh has been known to "overestimate" how many bars he has to solo and earn the right not to speak with Don or Glenn for a couple days after the show

You people who pay for a concert to go see every song arranged and played exactly the same way as the album are fuckin nuts and stupid. Now, if we're talking about a band that ducks all kinds of high notes on vocal melodies, can't pull off any backing vocals whatsoever (Boston in the early days didn't even try... one of the worst shows ever, honestly and I love the band), or their lead guitarist can't pull off anything he allegedly played on the album, then that's a different story....

My ex's dad is a huge Genesis fan, dating right back to the days when he saw them in some tiny venue in London in the late 60s just before they'd released "From Genesis to Revelation" (lucky git!) He told me Peter Gabriel was one of the most talented and most bizzare people he's ever met.

You took the words right out of my mouth!! Not many concerts better than his~ I saw him in Charlotte a few years back and it poured down rain like crazy and I sat right there and did not move and not many other people did either. It was exceptional!

Just a few off the top of my head. Vocally, NR and the Outfield aren't spot on, but I think they're actually both BETTER live than on their albums. Although NR misses Jeff Watson, IMO.

I really don't remember any band sounding "studio" in concert unless they were using backing tracks. There are bands that stay true to the studio versions of songs more than others.
