I can't help but wonder if she had been elected vice president if she would be stepping down from that too. McCain sure was a fool to tap her. She seems like an attention whore to me, and obviously has no committment to the people who elected her.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month. She will not seek election to a second gubernatorial term in 2010.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announces she's stepping down this month.

Palin, a Republican, was elected governor in 2006. She was tapped as Arizona Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year.

Palin said she was transferring authority to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in at the Governor's Picnic on July 25.

A Republican source close to her political team told CNN's John King that it was a "calculation" she made that "it was time to move on." The governor's "book deal and other issues" were "causing a lot of friction" in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes she is "mapping out a path to 2012."

As the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin has been considered one of the front-runners for the GOP nomination in 2012. Her decision not to seek another term as governor is sure to stoke speculation that Palin is seriously eyeing a run for the White House.

In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about her re-election bid because she needed to focus on her state and her family.

"So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked.

"No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded.

Palin catapulted on the national stage last August when McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, chose her as his running mate.

I would say it may be a rush to judgement to say she "bailed". It may be too soon to tell what her exact intentions are. Could be health issues, could be that she's going after something bigger that demands more of her attention and focus to achieve. Same as like when I completely gave up music as a career so I could focus on getting a career in the corporate world. She's got a vision, we have to learn what that may be. Or....maybe she just wants to enjoy life while she's still physically and mentally able, go on some trips around the world etc.

That's why I go to Japan so much now while I'm young. Once your old and can't move around much or that easily, ain't no fun traveling like it is when your able.

I am positively stunned. Who steps down b/c completing their term as governor? Only if there's scandal or illness. So which is it? Her reasons don't ring true. Actually, she's talking in circles. To me, this is the death knell for her further career aspirations as senator or president. The people of Alaska will turn on her for leaving office before completing her term after voting for her. Or am I wrong? Is this some brilliant career move? I can't see it, being a quitter and whining, acting like she's doing it for the people.

I bet there is much more to this than we are getting at the moment....we will see what the next couple of days brings.

Maybe she just wants to be a happy care-free grandmother now. Who knows....

From what I understand, Alaska went from loving her before McCain picked her as a running mate to hating her after he lost the election. I can see why... she seems so full of herself, and she loves to get in the middle of drama. Washington would have been a soap opera if she would have been elected.

Are you kidding? This woman is driven. I may not like her for vice president of our country, but I never doubted that about her and admired where she came from and moved up to governor. That takes tenacity. I agree with Portland, something will be coming out. If not, political career suicide, unless she's ill or someone in her family is ill. She can still make a ton of money on books and speaking engagements and so forth.

I could see her focusing in on a career in the judicial system.

Yeah, you gotta remember - she can probably see their launching site from her back yard.

Time Magazine is speculating that she may be focusing on a Senate bid or Presidential bid. How does not serving out your first term as governor and letting down the people who voted you in help you in that endeavor? It makes it seems you're not tough enough for the job.

Maybe she wants to go for something bigger and go for a senate seat to prepare for running in 2012 for president :P

Completely unrespectable move. The people of that state elected her to do a job and she's bailing out because of a book deal and because it's "time to move on"? Get over yourself and do the job you wanted, ran for and were chosen to do.

THANK HEAVEN she didn't end up as second in command of this country. She might have had to resign because a salon appointment got in the way.

Though I suspect the people of Alaska might be better off this way.

If she was planning to be the messiah for the GOP, she just totally blew it. I wonder if Douche Dumbaugh will make excuses for her or trash her.

I could be wrong, but I say excuses. I'm waiting for the big Palin supporters to come on here and say Poor Sarah, she didn't have a choice, and this is a good thing. When things like this happen, it always makes me appreciate Hillary Clinton even more regarding a woman in politics going for higher office. No matter what, that woman never gave up even when bloodied and bruised. Even her detractors have to give her that, tough as nails and driven and has the brains to back it. 8)

This thread seems to be dominated exclusively by this board's token Liberals and Democrats. I'm curious to see what some of the more Conservative posters think this is all about. Anyway, I really don't give a damn, either way. Everyone knows it's going to be Beck-Limbaugh in 2012...or perhaps O'Reilly-Katz. Sanford-Stevens? Durenburger-Hutchison? The possibilities are limitless.

Exactly... just like you and I are better off without Blago. Hopefully she will go out the way Rod did... a few reality shows and then they're forgotten.

Ok here goes...

Career suicide...plain and simple...though I like Sarah Palin, the mismangement of her as a VP Candidate made her look unprepared for that office, let alone the office of President. Quitting as Governor only makes that look worse. IF this is a setup for her to run for President, I have news for her: She is UNELECTABLE. She was made to look the fool by the press and her handlers.

And it's probably going to be even worse now. She made a promise that she was going to serve her term out to the People of Alaska, and has now renigged on that promise. "Read my lips", anyone"? Politiicans who break promises tend not to go very much further.

Again I like Sarah Palin, but this is a DUMB move that is going to do nothing but compound the errors from the 2008 Presidential campaign.
