Foreigner, Then and now...

I just thought it might be cool to have a thread discussing the "then VS now". The good and the bad. Foreigner is almost tied to me for me all-time favorite band. Depending on my mood, it's either them or Journey. Journey DOES normally win out though, but not by much.

So anyway, I thought it might be cool to post our favorite Foreigner videos up here and compare. OR, just post something you like, old OR new. Here are some of my favorite videos...

Here's an awesome mix of the NEW foreigner that I think is a good sign of what to expect on the new album...

It helps a lot that Kelly has that worn rockstar look to him. Decent height, with grungy black hair, nothing soft about him at all.

Well, Kelly was bandmates with Robert Sarzo, Rudy's brother so maybe it rubbed off on him.

Harry Patch. Passed away today at the age of 111. He fought in the trenches during the Battle of Passchendaele in which 70,000 other Brits died. The A/V is just my little salute to him.

Here's another favorite, and I really wish I liked the whole album more. I LOVE the tone of Lou's vocals here, and I think Mick chose to change the sound of the band too much here to use Lou's vocals to the fullest. To me, he tried to strip the album down without the keyboards or 80's sounding guitars, just to fit in with the times. That's what got them where they are... stick with what you know people!!! :x

I think after this album, that Mick will have a more "authentic" foreigner sound for the new album. I'm curious to see if Andrew has heard any of the new tracks.. :D Anyway, here it is.

"Until The End Of Time". Very awesome song! :D

Kelly is ok but just does not compare to Lou, hands down. Lou makes the top 5 best rock vocalist ever list while Kelly would make the top 5 bar band vocalist list in my my town. This is no slant against Kelly, it's just an accurate view of situation. There are some decent vocalist in my area.

I agree with you about Lou being better (in the past anyways). He is pretty much an even tie to me with Steve Perry. I think for what Foreigner was looking for, they couldn't have found a better replacement. He's not an exact clone, but he sounds great AND is an awesome front-man.

I don't know where you live, but you must have some hellacious bar bands to stake a claim like that! If that's the case, I want to pack my stuff and move there!

It's hard to believe Kelly has been singing almost five years with the group. He's been under the radar. I mean , we saw him on Sound stage and some of the morning shows when Too Late came out but no where near the hoopla of when Journey hired Arnel. I think this has made his transition smoother. With Mick waiting for a money making deal before releasing a new album, Hansen has had plenty of time to ease his way into the position.

If you can get here, you can have the ticket. I won't charge you for it, either, if you're willing to go to that trouble.

Well, saying he is a "bar band" vocalist is kinda a slant, don't ya think.

As with most bands, nothing compares to the original. Top 5 best vocalist ever is a bit kind imo, but he was awesome.

Saw them open for Journey in 99, and it was painful. Felt bad for him...Many fans in my area were saying things like "retire" or "awful".....

That all being said, I respect Lou a lot...Much more than I have respect for Perry. Lou is a quality guy, and I'm glad he put out an album where he can sing about his faith proudly.

As far as present day Foreigner goes, Kelly is perfect for the job.

One thing that I fail to understand, and never will understand. Is: how can people be fans Journey/Perry & Foreigner/Gramm and actually still be fans of the copycats singers today. I just don't understand, because it's second rate at best, I for one cannot settle for it.

So I am fan of Journey and Foreigner, of yesterday, the way the music was meant to be done with the original singers who made those songs what they were vocally. Gramm and Perry were irreplaceable, just like Mercury, just like Jagger, just like Plant, Waters, and all the legends in the business. You can't replace a legend with a nobody and expect the same success, it will never happen.

Fixed for you. Sorry it's so problematic for you, but fans are still happy to go to the shows and there's still a lot of excitement and energy at a Journey show, speaking from first hand experience. Journey has is still a great band with a great singer. The problem is, the fans will not move on to the newer music. What if Journey had hit the stage with AP back in the hayday? My guess, since we'd have never known about SP, is that AP would now be legendary.

To each their own I guess Steve :) I would definetly see a Journey show now, and probably enjoy it too.

But Steve Perry is a far better vocalist, understands how to utilize the voice on a much higher level, better timing, diction, pronunciation, everything is just far superior and controlled (in short: has a voice to create hits, a voice for the radio). Arnel is cool, but I don't see him winning over the western market, the appeal just isn't there for somebody who doesn't have a distinct voice or really an identity at this point.

As for AP writing, it will be all Cain and Schon on this one. Just like when SA attempted to write for Journey, it didn't work out too well.
