I don't think I recognize the guitar Schon is playing, almost looks like he is demo-ing a prototype. Cool, though!

Rik Emmett very cool that you listed him, he's amazing.
Joe Satriani

The first two are in order, but it's hard to say who takes the last 3 spots.

If Night Ranger had opened for Journey here, I would have gone in a heartbeat. Their live show will give Neal and the boys a run for their money.

I saw them a couple of years ago, and Gillis floored me. Motherfucker is amazing.

I saw them at the Budokan in the mid 80's. From what I can tell, they haven't lost a thing.

I saw them in the 80's also, but was too naive to realize what kind of talent they had. I absolutely love getting to know these bands for real now. Holy moly, did I miss out on a lot because of naivety.

I was thinking that in another thread, when Scandal got 30 minute stage time before Greg Kihn came on to open for Journey. I thought they were alright but I didnt appreciate Patty Smyth until well after the fact. To think, she actually turned down the job to replace Roth in Van Halen.

I remember that. Who would have thought? There's a big VH-DLR fanclub that just hates Sammy. I wonder what they would have said about Patty. As fantastic as she is, they would have crucified her just as bad or worse.

A guy not on my list but a great guitar player is Boz Scaggs. I saw him 20+ years ago and being new to his music, didn't really pay attention to his muscianship. I got to see him again a few months ago and have to say that this guy can play. He has some serious Blues talent inside him.

Eddie definitely beat his own drum. Going after Patty, teaming up with Michael Jackson, no one can say he wasn't a risk taker.

Check out Monte Montgomery if you haven't. He was featured on Daryl's house. He's a guitar playing sonofabitch.

He's the guy that covered Sara'Smile, right? What a humble dude, looks like the kind of guy to go drinking with and let him play his guitar around the fire.

A friend of mine keeps nudging me to go see him when he's here, and I haven't yet, but I certainly plan to after seeing his work.

Being a guitar player, this is something that could change not just daily, but hourly for me, but here's a few perennial faves:

Neal Schon
Steve Lukather
John Petrucci (when he's dialed in to being a great player and not just shredding)
Randy Bachman
Stephen Stills (incredibly underrated)

Honorable mention to Satch, by far my favorite instrumental player, I just don't listen to instrumental guitar like I once did.

Tony Mcalpine (better than vai in my opinion)

Kee Marcello

Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold (I know, a little out of character around here)

In no order:

Mike Dmitrovic (Emerald Rain)
Pete Lesperance (Harem Scarem)
Audley Freed (Cry of Love)
Criss Oliva (Savatage) RIP
Doug Ott (Enchant)

Honorable mentions to Bill Yates and Pete Southern (Balance of Power)

P.S. - concerning Harem Scarem and Emerald Rain. Hess smokes Daigle vocally, and Dmitrovic plays rings around Lesperance. Too bad they couldn't switch bands....LOL
