OT | Orphan (The Movie)

Was VERY pleasantly surprised by this film tonight!

When I saw the trailers I thought "Great, another Omen/Good Son - type rip off." But it got some decent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so I decided to give it a shot versus another Harry Potter film.

This was a really great suspense film! The cast was spectacular, and there was several different levels going on during the film - Plus there's a huge twist at the end that really makes the movie.

I have been surprised by this movie and "Drag Me To Hell" this summer. I've been pretty selective on films this season because of my schedule, but aside from Transformers 2, it's been a pretty good summer...

Wasn't this movie a Japanese/Korean movie remade for U.S. audiences? That seems to be the trend with these horror/thrillers the last few years.

No, I believe this was an original screenplay by a first time screen writer.

If that's the case I might check it out. It would be nice to see something original for a change when it comes to horror movies.

To me, "Drag Me To Hell" = Horror movie

"The Orphan" = Suspense movie

Sam Raimi is a genius! This is the exact type of horror movie I like. Scary with bits of humor and well acted. Christopher Young's score is my favorite score of the year so far.

OH, I love a great suspense movie, and I was unsure about this movie, if it was more horror/gore. Thanks for the review.

i'm a little surprised adoption advocates haven't been vocal about this movie.

Oh, they have. Though their effort has gone largely unnoticed in the larger news markets.

{snippet... U.S. adoption advocates publicize concerns over 'Orphan'

By associated press

July 18, 2009
New York - Often divided over policy and practice, America's adoption community has unified in dismay over "Orphan," a horror movie opening next week that its critics say will fuel negative attitudes toward real-life orphans.

Some adoption advocates are urging a boycott of the movie, which opens Friday. A coalition of prominent national adoption and foster-care groups, while not joining the boycott call, has asked for a meeting with Warner Bros. Chief Executive Barry Meyer to discuss their concerns.

"We are concerned that in addition to its intended entertainment value, this film will have the unintended effect of skewing public opinion against children awaiting families both in the United States and abroad," said a letter to Meyer from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. }

Thanks for the heads up Jeremey..The production company that made this film typically does decent caliber work (Dark Castle), so if it's from them, you can expect at least a ground level of quality was applied. So much trash out there in the horror related genre. Can't wait to see Drag me to hell on blu ray. Raimi - a definite genious

I definitely want to catch this... and I'm sad i missed Drag Me to Hell. I missed Transformers 2, but I heard very mixed things about it and I truthfully thought the first one fell in line w/ the Spiderman movies for me (super acclaimed, but just decent in my eyes).

It hasn't been a great summer for me movie wise... Terminator was a HUGE disappointment and awful, Pelham 123 was pretty bad, Public Enemies was pretty decent but fell short of its potential... what else have I seen... hmm. OH! Hangover was hysterical. The Proposal was decent in terms of movies you get dragged to by your girlfriend/wife/significant other... watchable at least
