MR

I mean the genre, not the webpage....

I blast this stuff out of my postal vehicle all day and not ONE person has ever inquired about any of it. Besides the occasional person here, whom I've suggested a couple of groups to - no one has ever been moved to expand their musical horizons and try something new.....has the ho-hum disposable music that these people are inundated with on a daily basis actually taken over their minds? Has T-Pain, Taylor Swift, David Cook, and Lady GaGa actually carved out a permanent space in the collective minds of the average person? Are 'we' alone in our quest to keep this genre alive?

Why have 'we' stuck with this music through the grunge days, rap phase(which doesn't seem to be a phase at all)...?

Why can't other people get into this stuff?

What are YOU doing to get the message out that this music still kicks ass? And for those who are trying, how have you fared?

No one is interested. But, then again, no one is interested in a lot of my music, which is not melodic rock.

It's pretty difficult getting people who post here interested in an artist they haven't heard before!

Speaking of which, I love your "now playing" tune. One of my favorites off that 1st cd.

I'm open mind to very diferent styles inside rock...actually i started to listen Deep Purple, Pink Floyd,Uriah Heep, LZ (parents fault), then i went for thrash,NWOBHM, glam, grunge,prog (even death metal)and now...melodic rock LOL
I don't know if anyone isn't interested..some people ask me, hey what are you listening? who are they?..so i guess i had luck all this time..

I'm studying with a bunch of kids between 18 and 25 predominantly, and a lot of them are into '80s' music, rather than a genre. There seems to be approval every time I pull out some of my stuff, regardless of whether it's from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s or last 10 years, but their recognition level of actual songs and artists is pretty low; whatever gets frequently regurgitated in those '80s Mix' albums on a regular basis. It's kind of 'spot whose parents were into Toto/Supertramp/DuranDuran/Led Zeplin' depending on which band they have a deeper knowledge of.

Having said that, I actually have an office on campus, and my computer is loaded with MR music which I play all the time. I've been getting a few 'who is that?' requests which is nice to see.

My friends have at least an elementary knowledge of melodic rock because I shove it down their throats so much haha.

The biggest hits among them are JSS/Talisman.

And I managed to get a big gaggle of them to go see Kip Winger with me.

Most people I know (whom I have tried to re-educate on MR) have the same view I've been developing over the years....this style of music is dying the slow death it should have been given in the early 90s.

Shotgun Kurt ruined what should have been a graceful death. Granted, because of that showerless heroin addict, we were treated to a second wave of hard melodic rock like Ten, Bob Catley, etc....

But the fact remains that we're now watching this music writhe and die a very slow, methodical and, to some, painful death. It's hard to show people the 'good' things about MR, when the bad things are very prevalent and obviously bringing it down.

So, no, I haven't had much success. Hard to say "listen to Styx, aren't they great??" when they are 2/5 of the original band...and they are that way because the principal artists can't stop acting like fucking children....and wont speak to eachother... hard to say something is wholesome and pure when a band has gone through 3-4 vocalists, and the latest is some hired thug making minimum wage, discovered on you tube....

I wouldn't want to latch onto this music either, if I was on the outside looking in!

Great post....HOWEVER, I'm really not talking about geriatric groups like Journey, Styx, Foreigner.....These bands are dinosaurs. They are producing nothing fresh, and nothing worth listening too -GENERALLY.

I'm talking about groups like Talisman, Eyes, Harem Scarem, Emerald Rain, Burning Rain, H.E.A.T., Brother Firetribe, Danger Danger, Airbourne, Airless, ...etc.

You know something? That's something that I hadn't considered. I've had discussions with friends about Harem...I keep telling them they have to give them a try, beacuse its so fucking good....

usually, they go "frank, we never like the crap you listen to" LOL!!! But Im convinced that Harem would turn em around....

I have tried for years just to get my wife to listen to some of the melodic rock in my pretty decent-sized collection. The closest I've come is when she heard part of the first Sunstorm album and said it was "pretty good". Otherwise, she's just not interested in trying anything that's not on the radio. That's pretty much the case with anyone I try to introduce to melodic rock.

Just take a look at myspace's top 10 music searches on any given day... there's your answer. Sickening.

This new chick I started dating likes hip-hop type music. She's 12 years younger than me so I guess that's what she's grown up to. She does have a few Journey records though but generally doesn't really like this type of music. She told me this story about when she was in high school, her boyfriend at the time took her to the end of a runway so they could park and watch the planes take off and land and they were listening to DSB. She said she'll never forget that song because of that.
