OT--Brett Favre decides to remain retired from the NFL

After nearly three months of what he described as intense and often emotional soul-searching, Brett Favre decided to remain retired from the NFL rather than become the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback.
Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder that the decision not to play for the Vikings was incredibly difficult, and in the process he indicated that he is unlikely to ever considering playing again in the NFL. "It was the hardest decision I've ever made,'' Favre said. "I didn't feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I would like to thank everyone, including the Packers, Jets and Vikings -- but, most importantly, the fans."
Favre, who had shoulder surgery in May, experienced soreness in both ankles and his left knee during his private workouts in Mississippi. The pain would not subside and worsened as he continued to prepare for a potential 19th NFL season, which Favre considered proof that his health was too precarious to be trusted for a 16-game season.
"I had to be careful not to commit for the wrong reasons,'' Favre said. "They were telling me, 'You went through all this, you had the surgery and you've got to finish it off.' But I have legitimate reasons for my decision. I'm 39 with a lot of sacks to my name."
Favre, who is nearly 40, said his decision was made after consulting with former coaches Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid, and despite the lobbying efforts of Vikings players. Adrian Peterson, Jared Allen Steve Hutchinson made phone calls or sent text messages in what one source described as Minnesota's "full-court press'' to convince Favre to sign the previously negotiated one-year, $10 million contract.
But Favre rejected the Vikings on more than one occasion in the past week. Last Monday, Favre informed offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a former Green Bay assistant coach and a close friend, he thought playing again was too risky and that he would remain retired. When Favre told Bevell he wasn't sure his body could endure a full season, Bevell pleaded for him to reconsider, and Favre consented but could "never get over the mental hump."
"It was a rare and unique opportunity to consider adding not only a future Hall of Fame quarterback but one that is very familiar with our system and division," Vikings head coach Brad Childress said in a statement. "That does not detract from the team that we have. As we have consistently communicated, we feel good about our team and they have put forth a tremendous effort this offseason preparing for the season ahead. With this behind us, we look forward to getting to Mankato and getting training camp underway."
Favre underwent arthroscopic surgery to release a partially torn biceps tendon in his passing shoulder, a painful injury that contributed to his tying for the NFL lead in interceptions last season. The surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews proved beneficial.
But, ultimately, Favre feared that the pain that emerged from in his ankles and knee from previous injuries created too much uncertainty.
He was concerned that the pain might never subside and could continue to worsen, and he understood that signing and reporting to camp and then leaving prematurely would result in criticism over his decision to play again.
"The problem with playing in every game for 16 or 17 years is that people think there's nothing wrong with you and you can play forever,'' he said. "The things that bothered me, bothered me a little more. It takes longer to recover -- if you do recover."

As a Packer fan, I for one am delighted Farve is staying retired. He should have made that decision a year ago and avoided a lot of hard feelings and angst for the fans who loved him.

Re: the vicodin remark, I think it was a cheap shot. But you're a master of the cheap shot SJ.

Yeah, the Lions have pretty much sucked since Barry Sanders retired. But I don't feel too sorry for you. Your college football teams usually do pretty well, and the Red Wings always seem to be in the playoffs. You can't win everything.

Wow, Saint John you need to learn how to let go of your resentments.

Why so much hate? Did you lose a bet or something?

You can't be a real football fan, to say that.
It's a sad day that Brett is done. With all of the boring, average QB's playing today, he will be missed.
And the vicodin thing? Well, he's no Little Ben, out there wrecking his crotch-rocket and getting accused of rape.
There are only 2 great QB's left playing now that Brett is done. Peyton and Brady. The rest are average or below.
You will be missed Brett. Never missed a fucking game in his CAREER. THE iron man in NFL history! Only he and Peyton have 3 MVP's. Now guys miss games with "flu-like symptoms".

I loved Brett Favre as a football player and I loved the Brett Favre that took vicodin like they were PEZ. I respected
that guy. The non-vicodin taking Favre is a pansy, bi-polar, mind-switching, baby. Weird situation.

Those guys
need to drink and pop pills to fuckin live man... they get the SHIT beat out of them. Bernie Kosar is a drunk (great guy though, really truly a nice guy), but I'm sure he drinks because he can barely even walk when he gets up in the morning after being a slow QB behind a shit line.

I got just as fed up with Brett's retirement antics as you. But the crap your spewing is just plain wrong. Pansy? bi-polar? Get real. I choose to remember the 16 great years he gave the fans, the records he broke, the new records he set. Not the least of which is his record of continuous starts. If you can't make an intelligent point without spewing your ignorant hate filled bullshit then I guess this conversation is over. I don't know why I even bother trying to have a actual discussion with you. So you can just blow your opinions....well you get the picture.

Drew Brees might have something to say about that.
"Brees has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his career - with the Chargers in 2004 and the Saints in both 2006 and 2008. He was named the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year in 2004 and the Offensive Player of the Year in 2008.
Brees finished 15 yards short of the NFL record for passing yards thrown in a single season set by Dan Marino in 1984, nevertheless, he finished the season with 5,069 yards and became only the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season. He also passed for 300 yards ten times during the season, tying Rich Gannon's 2002 record. He was named FedEx Air Player of the Week for his performances during weeks 8 and 12".
Peyton Manning will most like break every or almost every QB record in the book.....But one series knock is that in 9 seasons he went 1 and done in the playoffs. I love the guy though...He and Brady are QB Royalty in the NFL.

i could be wrong but i think he is doing this to get out of training camp.he is still going to be working out from what reports have said.soon as these few weeks of camp are done then favre will pop back up maybe.first game i sat my three year old son down to watch with me was the NFC championship game when favre and packers played the giants in the snowy freezing weather.i was hoping hard for favre to pull the game off but it didn't happen.

I found an good article that was written in 2008 comparing Farve, P. Manning and Brady. It reviewed all the records currently held by Farve and how long it might possibly take for Manning & Brady to break. Interesting analysis. If they both stay healthy and their teams remain competitive, it's definitely possible. Time will tell I guess.

Theres an interesting formula ot there - If you multipy the number of times Farve has come in and out of retirement by the number of times Steve Perry has denied rumours of a comeback you get a number that equals the projected US budget deficit in 2050.
P.S,. As a Vikings fan Im not upset about Farve not playing for us . Wouldnt have done us any good.

Favre had the tools, but only the tools to last about... 6 games of 2009 (and beyond) football. The man's body has been through so much hurt, and with the gas in his arm gone from the bicep surgery, never mind him being 40.. 16 games is a form of BRUTALITY in football. I'm glad he's staying retired, because I think he would of embarrassed himself, and his stock as a legend would of plummeted. He shouldn't of even went to the Jets, but I understand his decision to give it one more last go.. as what Rocky would say "get rid of stuff in the basement." Take care, Brett, it's been fun watching you.

Tight End, Heath Miller just signed a 6 year extension with Pittsburgh. The Steelers are MAD SCARY RIGHT NOW!
