Songs from abandoned Journey 1995 (with Chalfant and Rolie)?

Postby Maro » Thu Jul 30, 2009 7:33 pm

Is there any chance for songs written by 1995's Journey line-up (Chalfant/Rolie/Schon/Cain/Valory/Smith) to ever see the light of day?

Apparently, Kevin Chalfant is hiding this songs in his vaults (demos?, lyrics?, notes?)...

Maybe now after he's done with Fly2Fr33dom he might decide to record them and publish it... or there might be some legal stuff preventing him to do it so?

Or maybe this is just another urban legend, and there weren't any songs written, rehearsed, recorded...

I don't believe I have ever heard Neal, Jon, Ross, Steve S. or Gregg refer to that lineup. It would be interesting to hear some details, and how that would have worked out between Jon and Gregg.

I don't know about them, but Kevin spoke about it couple of times...

here:

http://www.libertynjustice.net/gettoknow_kevinc.php

"I did a live performance with Journey in 1994 in San Francisco. I was asked to join the band. I began writing with Gregg, Neal and Jonathan. Then out of a nearby phone booth, Steve Perry reappears with a new fire burning. It burned long enough to record a new CD — and then back to permanent vacation again. God has something much bigger in store for me. It is a life's goal and a destination that only He can finish in me."

also, here:

http://melodicrock.com/interviews/kevinchalfant00.html

"I had been writing with Neal, Jonathan, and Gregg when the rumors were flying.
Steve Perry came back to make another record and Ross told me that they (Steve & Ross) had discussed me. He told Ross that he thought that I was a great singer, the feelings are mutual."

also, from his myspace account:

http://www.myspace.com/kevinchalfant :

"After a hiatus from music in the mid-90s, he has remained active in solo and group projects, and has stepped in as temporary lead vocalist for Journey (1994) and The Alan Parsons Live Project (2003)."

Yes, I had read most of those comments by Kevin too. It would be interesting to know more, everyone seems to know about it and that's about it.

if rollie joined up they would've had two keyboard players.something tells me that might not have went over so well in the long run.

This is the lineup I had wished they would have stuck with. Rolie could add some harp/vocals to the piano driven Cain songs. Cain could ad some rythm guitar to Rolie era tunes. Just make some minor re-arrangements to the tunes for live shows. And new music, well there is no reason you can't have both piano and organ trading off or Jon on guitar, or Greg doing duet vocals, or.............

The possibilities were limitless.

This was the Herbie roast in SF from years ago. Basicaly, every past member of Journey was there, except Steve Perry. Perry was writing/recording FTLOSM at the time and did not want to, or couldn't, take time away from that.

I'd love to see/hear anything from this...but I do not know of any recordings. Lora had a nice write up of it in the newsletter from back then. If I remember right, they did two sets of songs, one of the older stuff...and then one of the newer stuff where Chalfant joined them in place of Perry.

Yeah, it's ironic that nowadays people are going on about this. Not that I would not have enjoyed it - I very much would have.

But, at the time, Chalfant was getting just as much heat as Augeri eventually did. He was a Perry imitator. He was even trying to look and act like Perry on stage. The Storm was a watered down version of Journey with a Perry wannabe singing lead. Blah, blah, blah. I felt like one of only a handful of people who believed Chalfant could have been Perry's replacement. it's too bad more people back then didn't believe what so many people seem to believe now....maybe it actually would have happened.

I really love the TBF album and I'm glad they got Steve A. 'cause that's my favorite lineup, but that was an amazing post Sir Monker.

I would have been more interested in the Rollie/Schon chemistry that may have been reignited. Dont forget that those two go way back. That would have meant more rockers. Would have been interesting if Rollie had been on TBF. Wonder why he wasnt since he was working with them the year before.

Chalfant is a great singer, but he's lacking the power in his voice to pull off the classics live IMO. Original material written between those guys would likely have been awesome. I hope we get to hear those tapes from "his sock drawer" someday.

My guess, the decision was dictated by SONY and they wanted the Escape/Frontiers era lineup.

What dictated the decision was $. Mr. $ was more important to everybody involved then Journey itself, or any of the individuals.

Hey St. John!!

IF Kevin wrote them or CO wrote them, then he can release them IF HE OWNS THE RECORDINGS ...HOWEVER, I highly doubt he would 100% own recordings with those cats on it....so, he can RE RECORD them as a cowriter...ie, I wrote a bunch of stuff with Frankie Sullivan for the new Survivor album, I can at ANY TIME record those tracks myself...I wouldnt of course, but thats the point....I would NOT own the Survivor recording just as KC would probably not own those recordings....hope that makes some sense...but as a writer I could RE RECORD them when ever I feel like it, and if they changed the lyrics I could go record them with my original lyrics....It becomes legal gobblygook but I hope I answered the question....thats why you work with people you trust....

In the end, St. John would be correct....

Thanks, Joe. Monker, Joe Vana was the person I was referring to when I said what I said. Why you constantly have to have the "Prove it!!!" mentality is beyond me. You're an asshole of epic proportions and you're so fucking melancholy you could make the deceased cry at a funeral just by your very presence.

Let me tell you one damn thing. Kevin Chalfant was/is a God. He is everything Journey needs today but is too stupid too realize. If Mr. Chalfant reads this board I hope he realizes he is the savior of this classic band.
