The main reason why these songs were re-recorded is due to royalties. If an original KISS song is used in a movie,
a commercial, Rock Band, etc., KISS would be sharing royalties with their previous record company, Universal/Mercury.
If one of the re-recorded tracks is used in a movie, etc., Universal/Mercury does not receive royalties.

I love KISS but one thing I have always hated is the recording sound of their albums.. most of the time I just think it's awful. Normally I prefer to listen to them live (unless it's a Gene song which I skip over quite often).

I remember reading about re-records ages ago. Sounds good. PS's voice still sounds great.

It'll also keep previous members who played on respective tracks from getting royalties as well

exactly.plus most of those are the songs from the seventies when ace and peter were there.does anyone remember axl rose trying to pull this stunt? axl tried to do some re-records here in the last couple years mainly for movie soundtracks.the rest of guns n roses wasn't stupid though and they quickly sqaushed it.

That's what I was thinking too. :) But do Gene & Paul actually play their own instruments in these versions? That was one of the biggest disappointments about "Psycho Circus", supposedly an album for "the fans".

Ace and Peter were mostly left off Pyscho Circus

Ace played on 2 tracks and Peter played on 1

Paul did a lot of the lead guitar work himself.

That won't be an issue on the new cd though

This was part of an album entitled "JIGOKU-RETSUDEN" a Japanese only release. It was released on August 27, 2008. It's said that it's a record that was recorded so KISS could use these songs instead of the originals to avoid having to lose royalty money to their old record label Mercury. Album pressed with a DVD of a live concert from KISS's 4/2/77 performance at the Budokan in Tokyo, Japan (taken from the "Kissology VOl. 1-3" DVDs)

More information on it is here http://www.kissfaq.com/KissFAQ-wiki/ind ... u-Retsuden

Personally I'm not a fan of the rerecordings as I'm a tradionalist. I do however like this version of Hotter Than Hell.

Thus far the only song off this record to see the light of day in America outside of hardcore KISS fans like myself is "Calling Dr.Love" which appeared in the Gene Simmons Dr.Pepper commercial.

The only song that the entire band played on during Psycho Circus was Ace's song "Into The Void". Most of the lead work was done by Paul and Tommy Thayer. Bruce Kulick played on the intro to "Within" as the guitar sound is acutally guitar work of his played in reverse. Kevin Valentine played drums on most of the tracks.

That's actually my least favorite of the re-recorded tracks. You could actually kind of tell that whoever recorded and produced those tracks messed around with Paul's vocals somewhat. That plus the original verision of "Forever" is actually one of my personal favorite ballad's so it's hard for me to like the new watered down version.

No, Ace, Peter, etc., still receive songwriting royalties for the songs that they wrote/co-wrote.

Paul, Gene, Eric Singer, and Tommy Thayer played on the re-recorded tracks.

On the "Psycho Circus" cd Paul played guitar and some bass ("We Are One"; the chorus of "I Pledge Allegiance").

Gene played bass on his songs and guitar on "We Are One".

Bruce Kulick played bass on Paul's songs and he played the backwards guitar intro on "Within" (they used this part from the demo which was recorded during the "Carnival Of Souls" sessions). Bruce also worked with Paul while Paul was demoing some of his tracks.

Ace played the guitar solos on "Into The Void" and "You Wanted The Best".

Peter played drums on "Into The Void".

Tommy Thayer played all of the other guitar solos.

Kevin Valentine played drums on all of the other tracks.

Kiss will always be the hiss and pop of Vinyl back in the mid and late 70's, fresh home from the record store.

I don't think the re-records have the depth of the originals. They sound "thin" to me.

Personally I love KISS, I got to see them years ago with Skid Row (minus Sabastian Bach), KISS was awesome. Skid Row did okay, but KISS rocked the house! I would love to see them again. I'll have to find the re-release CD for my daughter-in-law.
