OT: My stupid iPhone

PostPosted: Mon Aug 24, 2009 11:03 pm

Been meaning to ask this question for a while, because a quick search of Google didn't seem to turn up any big known issues. My iPhone sets off anti-theft detectors in many stores (Best Buy, Wal Mart, Kroger, etc.) to the point that I often warn them as I'm walking in the door that it might happen, and I sometimes hold my phone back into the detector to demonstrate it. It's obnoxious!

It's a standard ol' school iPhone (no 3G, 3Gs, etc.) with WiFi DISABLED most of the time, but BlueTooth is ENABLED. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm on a call, though, and it happened twice yesterday with my BlueTooth headset turned off (but BT was still enabled on the phone). If it makes any difference, placing the phone too close to my wireless keyboard and mouse (NOT BlueTooth) disrupts the mouse signal, and I also haven't seen that happen with anyone else's phone.

Any else seen anything else like this or have this problem? Thanks in advance.

Quit lyin', Rip. We know you're stealing shit left and right from Best Buy and Wallyworld!! ;)

OK, all seriousness, I belong to a few geek forums. I'll throw out the question to the braintrust and run a few searches and see if anything turns up.

Does it look like this? This is what I have. It's ugly, but it sure works well.

Rip, I've looked in several search engines and forums, using different search terms, but I have found nothing. I hope you get it sorted out.

Rip, so far, no one's heard of this at all....I suspect you might have a good case in calling apple and going "wtf, send me a new phone, bitches!"

I agree with this. Tell them you have been questioned by security in 8 different stores and strip searched in at least 2 of them and you want the one with 3G for all of your inconvenience.

Apple are the ones telling people that the reason that their new 3GS I-phones are getting hot is because they are leaving them in the car. Never mind that people don't generally leave their phones cooking on the dashboard and most teenage I-phone users don't even have cars.

If it ever goes off in Victoria's Secret, I'll volunteer for the strip search. But Wal Mart or Best Buy? No thanks!

I did call the AT&T store today, and they directed me to Apple tech support. So I called them, and believe I have an acceptable explanation for the problem. The first guy was stumped also and he had to ask someone higher up the support chain. That guy had actually seen my issue on just a few occasions. Turns out it's apparently a VERY rare problem that only seems to affect a few of the original 1st run iPhones (back when they cost $699.00, even before Apple first lowered the price and had to offer rebates to appease the idjits who paid that ridiculous price for one). It's caused by some type of "TDA interference", which he said was most likely also responsible for the interference with my wireless mouse at my office. No idea why it doesn't affect my mouse at home, since they are nearly identical.

I think it's just about time to trade up for a 3Gs...

Actually, I did find a good number of people complaining about their iPhones causing noise on nearby speakers, and it sounded like it could be a GSM issue rather than just an iPhone-specific issue. Mine does the same but it seems to be much stronger than any other phone I've had, and I have to keep it much further away from speakers as a result.

Free at last! Went to the AT&T store today and picked up a 32GB 3GS. I wanted the 16GB version, but didn't have the patience to wait 10 business days for it to arrive. Best decision I could have made -- much, much faster, no noise from interference in my speakers, and finally... decent cell signal in my house! Never considered that my lack of signal here may have just been with the old 2G network.

Nice!!! Actually, that one is probably a little too small for my concert commando needs. This is what I'm needing these days:

Image

I noticed the URL in that picture was www.peryphon.co.il -- Perry Phone?!?!?

Now check this out -- I walked into a Best Buy last night with my new 3Gs on my hip.... and the security beep went off!!! I spent a minute trying to figure out exactly what was doing it, and never could. It was hit and miss. Next time, I'll get the employee to wear my phone and walk in and out to see whether or not it's for sure it's my phone, bluetooth, whatever.

Ohh.... I think I have another idea. Wonder if it's my electronic access card for my office building? I may go to Best Buy later and test it out.

Mystery 100% completely solved now... It was never my phone, but my door access card I keep buried in my wallet. I normally get into my building by touching my butt to the sensor. :)

Anyway, it was packed away enough not to set the sensors in the stores off every time, but when I pull it out those things go off like a klaxon instantly. I think I'll start leaving it in my car from now on.
