And then, there was one.

I wasn't aware that Larry Knechtel had died last week. With Jimmy Griffin and Mike Botts both passing away in 2005, David Gates is all that is left.
These guys spent 18 years suing each other and bickering over petty stuff. They reconciled in 1996 but so much time had been wasted.
What a shame.

If reached #4 on the Hot 100 and used to receive quite a bit of airplay in the 70s but has disappeared pretty much. I hear it once in awhile as a lovesong request on the A/C stations bt that's very rare.

Wow, I did not know that GB. What's David Gates up to now, do you know?

He's retired, living on a ranch in California I believe. He's 69, so definitely nearing the twilight of his life. Probably just happy to still be around.

I was wondering why Goodbye Girl was not on this list. It dawned on me that this song was a solo effort by David.

No "Goodbye Girl"?

That was a solo hit for Gates, reaching #15 on the charts.

All most bed time. I'm going to see Foreigner tomorrow. It's been forever since the last time I saw them (1981, to be exact).

When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought, uh oh, Ringo. Have fun at Foreigner, we'll be expectin' a review of the new stuff. I'm sure they'll bring out a couple.

Loved their songs (and DG's voice) back in the day. What were they fighting over, GB?

ALL of those still get regular airplay on several Philippine MOR (AM and FM) stations.
Right up there with the radio durability of the Stylistics' hits.

What a classic song... the Leslie rotary speaker on there pretty much epitomizes it as a classic from that era.

Always wanted Neal Schon, with or without Journey, to cover 'Guitar Man'.
I imagine he'd do it better than the original.

"better than the original"?? No can do, It's been said here many times that you can't be better than the original, but you may prefer it.

It's been done.

SRV "Cold Shot"

Santana "Black Magic Woman"

I'm sure there's others, but agreed, don't think Neal could outdo this classic. Prob my favorite Bread song. Neal however would do a good version of it (at least the wah wahs) anyway.
