A Newbie Reviews Infinity, Escape & Frontiers!

Postby ChildInTime » Sun Sep 06, 2009 7:42 am

Woot!! Don't take these 100% seriously.... they're not meant to be taken 100% seriously. These were written before I joined this site, and they obviously weren't written for here, as the intro of the first one indicates. But I might as well add 'em here.

Here's the first one...

Journey- Infinity
Employees and jobs:
Steve Perry- Lady-singing/King of Sap
Neal Schon- Face-melting
Ross Valory- Standing there pretending to play bass
Gregg Rolie- Keyboard playing and sometimes singing
Aynsley Dunbar- bangin' the drums

Intro: *WARNING* IF YOU ARE NOT OPEN MINDED IN ANY WAY, GO AWAY *END OF WARNING* Seriously. (edited it).:

Lights- Starts out with a 6/8 (I think... it seems too fast to be 3/4) guitar and piano/keyboard part... lookin good... aight, now the vox are in. Yeah, this is sort of weird starting track. Like... it's sort of a dance song. It's slow, swingy and in 6/8 time. It's good, though. Not too smarmy. Maybe the smarmy only came in once Gregg Rolie left. That dude was cool; he was in Santana (Sang lead vocals on Black Magic Woman, etc.). (wait.... Lovin Touchin Squeezin was there when Gregg was. Fuck. Theory disproven.) Steve's vocals are at their most high pitched on this album, and you can kinda tell. Ha ha. OOH, nice part. "IT's SA-AAD! OHHH!" Etc, because it's moving too fast. xD Yeah, this is givin' me uber-70s nostalgia. Good stuff. Oooooh guitar solo time! GO NEAL GO! YESSSSS. (I think the afro gave him strength. :P) Nice n' bluesy. Alright, now it's back to the first verse ("When the lights/go down/in the citaaay", etc.), but with group vocals. Kind of a Queen-esque thing. Ok, it's over. NEXT!

Feeling That Way- Startin' out with piano and Gregg is singing this time. He kind of reminds me of Elton John before the throat problems. I dunno why. Especially when he goes "Are you feeeelin-uh..... feeelin that way too-oo-woo..." Ok, now Steve's in. Wow, you know? Gregg and Steve blend very well. This song is more upbeat, but still midtempo. Oooh wow, they really do blend REALLY well. I'm surprised, but in a good way. This is a definite head-bobber once it gets to Steve's part (It gets more groovy there; Gregg's part is more smooth). Like the guitar part; rock on Neal. One thing I noticed though.... the bass isn't very out in the mix. Very guitar and vocal heavy production-- ESPECIALLY guitar. But it's not surprising; Journey USED to be focused PURELY on Neal's guitar playing if I recall correctly. So I guess they're still sort of in that mode here. Yeah, this song is catchy. It'll be in my head forever. DAMN YOU JOURNEY, YOU'RE MUSIC IS WAY TOO CATCHY.

Anytime- Group vocals galore in the opening... "OOOOOH ANYTIME THAT YOU WANT MEE!" This basically segues from Feeling That Way. Gregg is on main vocals again, with Steve (I guess) harmonizing with him in the chorus. Another kinda groovy thing. Oh, THERE'S Steve. Nevermind. I guess he's gonna weasel his way into all the songs, then. But this is mostly a track for Gregg and Neal to show off their stuff. There were less and less of those kind of deals as time went on.... looks like SOMEBODY went on an ego trip.... ;p Oh, nice drummin' from Aynsley Dunbar near the end. Kind of "Let it Be"-era George Harrison-ish guitar tone from Neal near the end. Ba-domp.

La Do Da- OOOOOO now THIS is more like it. A SWEET palm-muted riff from Neal. Reminds me of 70s era Judas Priest, kinda. Yep, this one is uptempo. The palm-muted riff turns less metal once it kicks in and more bouncy, but still cool. Nice bluesy honky tonky piano from Gregg. And here we go with the vocals from Steev... I don't really like how he drags out the last note of the phrases he sings here, but the rest of it is good so far. But what the hell with the "La do da do daaay". WHAT THE HELL IS THAT, STEVE. WHAT THE HELL, MAN. Whatever. This is still good stuff. The lyrics are smarmy, but the music is nice and fast-paced, and that more than makes up for it. OOOH I like that part at about 1:50, with the palm-muted stuff again. DAMN, UBER high note from Steve at the end. The mofo's a fucking banshee when he wants to be. Nice punky drummin' at the end. Annddd... that's that!

Patiently- THE FIRST BALLAD! Cool dark, minor keyed guitar part, though. Hmm, this might be something cool. Let us see... Oh DAMMIT Steve made it cheesy and major-keyed. WHAT THE HELL, STEVE. We had something going, too! Oh well. At least you kick ass at singing. I mean, you sound like a chick, but you do it tastefully, unlike a certain singer from a prog band I know of... *cough* GEDDY LEE *cough* Anyway... more piano-y now. Oh good, it's gonna get cranked up a notch. GOOD! Ok it's still pretty cheesy, and I HATE the "Onnne! Oooone in a miiiillion!" part because it is SO smarmy, but at least there's some nice guitar backing it up now. And here comes Neal with a nice, emotive guitar solo. He's good at the emotive, bluesy stuff. And also good at having an epic afro. ANYWAY... ("what was I saaaayin'"! xD *cough* wrong album.) some drum rolls at about 2:39, then it segues back into the pretty little acoustic bit from the beginning (w/ vox). Kewl. The best part about this ballad, though.... is that IT'S NOT ABOUT CHICKS OR RELATIONSHIPS! Give 'em a gold star!!

Wheel in the Sky- OKAY, now here's the CLASSIC! ALL RIGHT! Starts out on a clean guitar line before hittin' the distortion at about 0:14 and ROCKIN'. Kind of reminds me of a movie scene or something where we see a GTO or Charger or something speeding along a desert road, kickin' up all this dust and stuff, from a birds-eye view. This is a very Route 66 song. Sure, Steve still sounds girly, but the music is rockin' enough for it not to matter and I never minded the girly singing anyway. Hell yes. Weird lyrics, too. Pretty poetic for a band who also wrote smarmy stuff like "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin", ya know? WHEEL IN THE SKY KEEPS ON TURNIN! Yeah, catchy as hell chorus. You know you're good at writing hooky stuff when a modern rock and emo fan (my best friend :P) can dig this and get it stuck in her head. xD "My my my my my...."-- GUITAR SOLO TIME, BITCH!! And... HOLY DANG another crazy note by Steve in the background. When this song first came out, everyone thought it as a keyboard part... but nope! I guess Neal kicked Steve in the balls before that, ha ha (wait... does he have balls? The ultimate unanswered question.). More nice guitar stuff by Neal in the last verse, and it ends on a snare/cymbal part and repeated guitar chord, then fades out....

Somethin' To Hide- Here's another ballad, but it's an old school, groovy one, so it's all right I guess. But still... get out the lighters and tissues! I like the chorus, though, and the vocals throughout so far are very very good. Unless you're so fucking macho that you still can't get over the whole sounding-like-a-chick thing, because it somehow threatens your masculinity. Dude, the only one who's masculinity is threatened is Steve himself. You don't have to worry about shit; he's the one who sounds and looks like he has little to no no testosterone in his body at all. ANYWAY.... HOLY DAMN NEAL SCHON. Sorry, AWESOME guitar part after the chorus. I AM BOWING AT THE ALTAR OF NEAL. *bows* I gotta learn that part sometime, because that is a GREAT part. Neal Schon and David Gilmour are basically the masters of emotive guitar playing imho. Ok, it's over now, and there's some group vocalizing, la di da... (or should that be La do da, HURR HURR HURR.) Alright, now it's a return to the chorus, badabing badaboom. Ok, chorus x 2. And here's that GREAT guitar line of Neal's again, with Steve vocalizing over it... basically doing that part in voice and NAILING IT. This was godly.

Winds of March- "Somethin' " segues into this one. Another ballad, but more atmospheric and proggy sounding instead of groovy. More piano and keyboard than anything right now. Oooh yes, I like the kind of melancholy feel this has so far. Pretty. A snare roll brings in the vocals, and it's Steve on lead again. Oh yeah, I dig this one so far. Steve's vocals are damn gorgeous here, I don't care what anyone says. He sounds like a chick, but goddamnit he sounds like a chick who can SING, and sing very very well and quite emotively at that. So to me, it works out. OOh, distortion just kicked in! let's see where this ends up.... ok right now it reminds me of an Iron Maiden ballad or something--- OH WAIT A DAMN SECOND. It's getting.... HEAVY. YESSS. YES. KEEP ON GOING. YES! PERFECT! (I know, I know, that's what she said... *eye roll*) Sounds like Deep Purple now, no joke! Kickass keyboard/organ solo by Gregg! Kickass guitar solo by Neal! Oh dammit it got slow again. But that was AWESOME. And the solo's still going on.... yes it is awesome. Ok, vocals are back in now; singing the chorus... starts out belting it, but then fades to quietness and a classical guitar line closes it out. This song was AWESOME. Total eargasm. Especially if you ignore the lyrics.

Can Do- This one.... throws the groove off entirely. I mean what the fuck, we just got off the wings of a fucking EPIC and here's some weird little 2 minute ditty with a weird Beatles-esque chorus and Steve singing the verses like a black lady. Doofy lyrics, too. But it's not as bad as everyone says it is. I like the riff, and the solo is sweet-- reminds me of something Jimmy Page would come up with. Overall, though, this seems like an afterthought-- think Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Except Paranoid is better.

Opened the Door- Another kind of melancholy sounding ballad; the last song! YAY! Kind of the same in tone to Winds of March so far. You know, atmospheric and moody in both keyboard lines and vocals. And DAMNIT we're back to girls and relationships. Come on, guys. Oh well, it's still sounding cool and minor key, so I'm cool with it. This song would actually sound pretty cool a cappella. Not to snub the instrument players, though, cause it's great with instruments, too. Ok, now the song's a little less minor and more happy. Dammit. xD But the backing vocals of Gregg really help this band out. I wish he stuck around.... he left after their third album with Steev. <:( Sucks, too, I liked the bastard. Anyway.... this song was cool. Kind of classical sounding in parts; sweet.
And that's the end. AND DAMN my fingers are TIRED. I typed too hard. >_<

Favorite Songs- Feeling That Way, La Do Da, Wheel in the Sky, Somethin' To Hide, Winds of March
Least Favorite Song- Can Do
Total Amount of Songs- 10
Grade- A

Conclusion- This album, even though it's by Journey and they are basically everyone's guilty pleasure band, kicks some ass. Not TOO many ballads, some great hard rockers, and cool mid-tempo stuff. In other words, this is a pretty damn balanced Journey record! Nice flow to it. And they still had some "kVlt" cred on this, ya know? Rolling Stone actually gave this shit a great review! Rolling Stone! The magazine who hated these mofos the most! And if you have trouble getting into this because of Steve's girly voice, goddamnit. Chill out, relax, and remember that at least he's not Geddy Lee. The next album that I actually have all of is Escape, so tune in for that one.

What I would do to make this album an A+!
1. Tack on the really beautiful ending bit of Patiently that Steve usually adds in concert. (It really is beautiful. Goddamnit it seriously is.)
2. Start out the album with a more rocking number instead of Lights.
3. Move Can Do to after La Do Da or something. Or, you know, don't add it at all.

I mean everyone curses but if this is supposed to be informative it sounds pretty sophomoric with all the swearing and all the childish parentheticals.

Next One....

Journey- Escape
Employees and Jobs:
Steve Perry: Lady-singing/King of Sap
Neal Schon: Face-Melting
Ross Valory: Actually playing the bass this time (!!!)
Jon Cain: King of Sap/keyboard player that is nowhere near as cool as Gregg Rolie
Steve "Smitty" Smith: Steve #2; layin' down some kickass drummin'.

Intro- This is Journey's most famous album-- you know, the one with Don't Stop Believin' on it. OMG!!1!!11!!!eleventy-one!!! But there's also other good songs on it... in fact, DSB isn't even the best song here!! *gasp!* That's right! It's NOT. So shut up and listen to the rest of it, you boring doofus:

Don't Stop Believin'- Well, dang. It's Don't Stop Believin'. EVERYONE AND THEIR GRANDMA KNOWS THIS SONG. It begins with Mr. Jon Cain doing his little piano line that everyone (yes, and their grandma) knows by now.... and then.... "Just a small town girl...." yep, that first verse! Surprise surprise. This is one big build-up song: first comes the keyboards, then Steev, then some guitar.... goes through some more verses... then BANG! Smitty Comes in on the drums! "Strangaaahs! Waiiitin'! Up and down the booooulevaaaahd!" YESSSS. And then it builds up some more until the "in the NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!" Part, and then there's another verse, and then Neal comes in on the guitars and face-melts.... well, not really, but he basically sets up the melody for the closing, and then finally--- "DOOOON'T STOP! BELIEEEEVIN'!"-- the climax. And it fades out on the chorus. Ta-da. See, I didn't even have to listen to the whole song again for this one. Hurr.

Stone in Love- What does stone in love mean. I have no idea. Maybe it was an eighties thing. Maybe it means that you fell in love with a chick while you were smoking a blunt. "Duuude, man, I'm stoned and in love!" But that was too much to say, so it got shortened to "stone in love". That's it, that's the ticket.... Anyway, this song is pretty good. A nice pop-rocker with a good riff. The only problem is the tempo. Especially in the chorus. If they upped it up a few notches, it'd have a really fun punky little beat to it and it'd be WAY more fun. They luckily remedied this in live performances sometimes, but this is the studio version, and they messed up here. Oh well. Still pretty good.

Who's Crying Now- Another one that starts on piano, and it's a ballad. It is nowhere near as horrible as the stuff that will come at the way end of this record though, so hang tight. This one, even though it's marred by doofy lyrics thanks to Steev and sometimes Jon, is still pretty damn good. All you have to do is ignore the lyrics completely and you have yourself a perfectly good ballad. Also, it has a great, very haunting solo at the end that's worth your time and money. Neal saves EVERYTHING. It's his job. He's like "Super Afro Man." He probably even has his own theme song.

Keep on Runnin'- Wow, I think this is the only Journey song ever made beyond 1977 that has no keyboards in it at all. Sweet. But don't worry, they make up for it with the lyrics. They're bad. The song itself is good, though. Nice and rocky, with a good choppy riff in there, and Steve P. does some sweet slurred-scale-run-type things in the chorus. I just think they should've hired Bob Dylan to write some good lyrics for them. That would be interesting. It would be even more interesting to hear Bob Dylan's rendition of Don't Stop Believin'. I'd pay money to hear that.

Still They Ride- Finally, a good ballad! NOT ABOUT CHICKS!! HOLY MOLY! This one is about MOTORCYCLES instead! Well, ok, not really. Sort of, though. It's kind of a nostalgia thing. See, Steve P's a motorcycle type guy. Yeah, I'm surprised too. ANYWAY, this is a kind of haunting, and surprisingly beautiful, song. Great vocal melody, and a VERY nice chorus. The keyboards are tasteful and non-cheesy (or as non-cheesy as Journey can get), and it's well-structured goodness. Eat up.

Escape- Alright, the title track! Now THIS is a good song. A mid-tempo, march-y type number. Great beginning riff, too. This song is basically in three parts: first part is the march-tempo happy part about how the main character is finally gonna escape his crappy life, second part has the BEST riff, holy DANG; and now the main character's finally out of his crappy life and kicking some ass. Still kinda marchy, but more laid back. Third part begins with a solo and is flowing and perfect for driving down a desert road under a nice clear blue sky-- maybe ESCAPING from somewhere, amirite?!-- and ends with the main chorus and is basically a wrap-up of parts one and two. There ya go! A well-structured story-time song! Sweet! This is the best song on the whole record. Screw Don't Stop Believin'. This song right here is where it's at.

Lay it Down- Yay, a song about smexy-time! We always need one of these on a rock record, don't we? (Or if you're Aerosmith, you need 9 of 'em.) Some pretty good stuff, though. Mid-tempo, nice rocky feel. Steve is going nuts in the vocal department. He probably wrote this song, just to kind of say "HEY! Look at me!! I can sing 4 octaves worth of shit, HOW MANY OCTAVES CAN YOU SING?! PROBABLY NOT FOUR!! Loser."

Dead or Alive- For some reason, people hate this song. To this day I have no idea why. This song kicks ass. It's fast, dirty rock-n-roll, there's some fun honky tonky bluesy piano in the background, and Steve is doing thrash metal vocals before thrash metal was even AROUND. Not the harsh shouting part of it, but the "spitting out lyrics so fast you don't even know what he's saying" part. TOM ARAYA EAT YOUR HEART OUT. Great chorus, too. Damn, you could headbang to this song. AND PEOPLE HATE IT?!? WHYYYYYY.

Mother Father- This song is pretty epic. Kinda Lifetime-epic, but still epic at that. It's about basically a shitty family life and stuff like that. And it's not really a ballad, but it's not really mid-tempo either. It's kinda in the middle of the two. Nice use of dynamics, too. Kinda symphonic sounding without any true symphonic elements. And it's way better live, because Steev pretty much puts his all into it. Here, though, it's still pretty good. It's a grower, though. You're probably not gonna like it at first listen. I dunno why, exactly, but it was that way with me, and I'm not crazy, so I assume I won't be the only one who experiences this.

Open Arms- This song is... Uggghhhh. Very sappy, very keyboardy... and you may like it, but it's wayyyy too cheesy for me. I could say more about this, but let's just say John Waite was right and Steve Perry was wrong, mmkay? Just end this at Mother Father and pretend this never happened. Ok? Ok.

Rating: Because of Open Arms, it is knocked down from a perfectly enjoyable A to a B+.

Conclusion: This is kind of like a good story with a bad ending. Like "The Giver". That was a damn good book that was partially ruined with a shitty-ass ending. Plus the lyrics were pretty bad this time around, too. Steve, go to some creative writing classes, then come back. Ok? Either that, or follow my other advice and hire Bob Dylan to write your lyrics for you. The man knows his stuff.

I edited these and took out a bunch of the profanity, so chill out... take a breather... ok.

Better? Good. I am impulsive and young (Sixteen, to be precise. I am usually pretty mature for my age, but I screw up just like everyone.). Those are my excuses.

Here's the next one-- which is way less... yeah.

Journey- Frontiers

Employees and updates:
Steve Perry- Finally went through puberty, but is still the King of Sap
Neal Schon- Still face-melting with the best of them
Ross Valory- Is still actually playing bass, but a little more quietly this time. And he looks like the unibomber.
Jon Cain- Still King of Sap, and still a keyboard player that is nowhere near as cool as Gregg Rolie. Sorry Jon. But it's true.
Steve "Smitty" Smith- Still Steve #2, obviously, and still is awesome in the drumming department.

Intro- This album basically rode on Escape's success.... is it as good as Escape? Better? worse? I dunno, but the album cover is really... uh.... "something". It looks like a bastardized version of Darth Vader set on a blue background. Weird... Anyway, I took some liberties with the track list-- I included Only the Young, Troubled Child, and Ask the lonely, but left off Back Talk. Only the Young and Ask the Lonely were the songs that were originally supposed to be on the record, but were left off in favor of Troubled Child and Back Talk. But Back Talk.... is very bad. The nadir of bad lyrics. So I am pretending that the original track list plus Troubled Child is the REAL track list. OK? Ok. And AWAAAAAY we go!

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)- Starts on a keyboard riff, kinda like Escape did with Don't Stop Believin', except this is a pure 80s synthesizer sound as opposed to the piano sound on DSB. Not that great of a start... But now... Ooooh.... the guitars are soundin' heavy. It's a sort of syncopated, palm-muted riffy thing that just came in at about 0:07. The drums sound kinda Tarzan right now.... "duh-- duh--duh--DUH! duh-- duh-- duh-- DUH!" Now Steve's in on the vocals at about 0:30.5. Wow.... he sounds sorta husky and smexy and-- dare i say it-- MANLY here. DANG! It sounds good and it's still definitely tenor-range, though. The verses are basically the beginning part with the Tarzan drums until the "feelin' that it's GOOOOOOONNNNEEE!!" part-- the melody of which is the pre-chorus for the rest of the song's choruses. This part is more flowing and the drumming becomes more rock-ish instead of that jungle stuff. And then the chorus! "SOME! DAY! LOVE WILL FIND YOUUUU!" Kind of staccato-ish singing from Steve here. After two verses we get to the solo, which is sweet little melodic thing. And then there's one more chorus, and then it fades out on another Neal solo, and Steve vocalizing over it. And the whole thing finally ends with Steve singing/shouting "NOOOOOOOO!!" Who does he think he is, Darth Vader?! Oh well, whatever. That's the end.

Send Her My Love- Starts out with Smitty setting up the beat.... then the keyboards come in..... and... wow. This is pretty. Way less doofy than Open Arms, and has a very haunting, atmospheric quality too it. It sucks you in and doesn't pull you out. The vocals are very believable and emotive without beating you over the head with it, the keyboards are doing their job and being atmospheric and nuanced instead of over-the-top, and there's a great solo by Neal, as-per-usual. mmm-hmm, this was good. Actually... more than good. How about GREAT?

Chain Reaction- OOOOOOOOOO THIS is good. GREAT guitar riff.... palm muted metallicness, but slowed down to a hard rock pace instead of speedy metal goodness. Oh well. And Steve is sounding kinda bluesy and stuff. Good good. And the keyboards are thankfully downplayed. Wow, the chorus is great. This was obviously written by Neal or something, because the guitar parts are SO GOOD. I love the second verse. Steve goes crazy on that with the bluesy/R&B approach... and there's the chorus again! "CHAIN REACTIOOOOONNN!!", etc.; with Jon Cain providing echo backup vocals. Sexy. (The backup vocals, not Jon. He's an ugly dude to be honest.) I love the bridge... "So now just where do we go...?" Reminds me of Phil Collins, kinda. This song was cool, though. Really heavy for Journey. This was a sweet heavy rock song. Alright!

After the Fall- People like this song, but I have NO CLUE WHY because it's... boring, really. It never really goes anywhere and is stuck in a really ho-hum bass-driven mid-paced thing. Maybe I need to listen to it some more, because as of right now I do not get it's popularity.

Faithfully- The ballad of the record.... Jon Cain is obsessed with this song. It's nice, I guess. Better than Open Arms, anyway. I mean, it's still sort of... ugh, but NO WHERE near as bad as Open Arms. It has a more melancholy edge to it. The vocals, like usual on this record, save this from being average and push it up to pretty damn good, since his voice isn't anywhere near as high pitched-y as it used to be. This is a definite lighter song. Break out them Bics.... and don't forget the tissues for the lady-friends!

Edge of the Blade- Now THIS is more LIKE it. Very guitar driven, and kinda... fast! Almost headbang-able! Slows down slightly for the verses, but DAMN this is the most metallic song Journey has recorded so far (And perhaps the most metallic song they will ever record again). the riffs are chugga-chugga, the vocals are tough (for Steve anyway).... and jeez, it's basically an F-U to the man. What happened to THAT attitude? I guess they got too fat, rich, and content or something. Oh, I love that bit at 1:53... "If it's sharp.... if it cuts..... enjoy yourself!" BANG! SOLO! After that, Neal and Steve spit guitar lines and vocal lines at each other until the song fades out. A sort of vocal versus guitar battle, if you will. Like a sort of proto-Hangar 18 thing. Who will win?? I dunno, but JEEZ Neal is a great guitar player. Very emotive. ..... And Neal wins! Take that, Steve! Alright, now that Steve's whimpering away with his tail tucked between his legs, let's see what's next....

Troubled Child- ...... A ballad. Damn. Hot off the wings of 'Blade and it's another ballad?! Mmmrrrgh. Oh well... let's see how it goes. Sounds more haunting than Faithfully, so maybe this'll be cooler. More guitar-oriented, too. Steve is all subdued-like in the verses, here. I guess the vocal chord-shredding in 'Blade tired him out. OOH I like the pre-chorus... sounds sort of like an Iron Maiden ballad. Like, I can imagine Bruce Dickinson singing this part. And the chorus... hm.... I dig! Good trade-off of vocals and TASTEFUL keyboard playing. And then the guitar comes in after the chorus, kinda like how in Metallica ballads they start all soft then they have a BIG CHORUS and then Kirk starts wailin'. Except Neal Schon eats Kirk Hammett for breakfast. (And Journey are far from being metal.) See, this is why I didn't want to leave this one off the tracklist even though it technically was supposed to replace Only the Young.... because it's WAY better than Back Talk. Seriously, look up the lyrics to Back Talk. They're HORRIFICALLY BAD. And the song is doofy anyway. This one was not, so it stays. End of story. And... end of song!

Only the Young- Ooh, cool. Mid-paced drumming over acoustic and electric guitars. This has an 80s pop bounce to it, but I can totally picture this song as an acoustic-plucked-guitar-and-vocals-only ballad or even simply an acoustic rocker instead of a mid-paced number. I dig it as it is, though, and do we REALLY need another ballad on this?!? Didn't thinks so. Nice big, round drum sound, too. Great, soaring chorus, too. "ONLY THE YOUUUUUUNG CAN SAAAAAAY! THEY'RE FREE TO FLYYYYYY AWAAAAAY!" Yep.... a very catchy little thing. Wow, nice guitar tone on this one, too. I used to not really dig this song, but it's been growing on me lately. ...But if you listen to this, you can tell what I'm talking about with the whole acoustic ballad thing. Sweet little solo, too. And we're back to the chorus. Between this one and Troubled Child.... hm.... I couldn't choose! They're both too good to get left off. I think, though, that I would switch the track order so that this was BEFORE Troubled Child, so it would segue nicely into a ballad instead of that jarring change between that awesome hard rock number to a ballad, ya know? This song is like a bridge between the two. And the song fades out, just like a bunch of Journey songs. ...I kinda noticed that lately. They have a BUNCH of fading out songs. Huh.

Ask the Lonely- Wow, I like how this is starting! The guitar tone on this song so far reminds me of that Toto song, "Hold the Line". But this song is faster and so far... COOL! Lower vocals by Steve in the verses, and builds up to an AWESOME chorus. Just listen to it! FUCK! THIS is a good song! And this was LEFT OFF OF THE ALBUM!?! This song is great! Keyboard heavy, but also guitar heavy, so it balances it out. And this part: "WHEN YOU'RE LOST IN DEEP DESPAIR! YOU JUST ASK THE LONELYYYY!!" made my mouth drop. It's with group vocals and is just a strong post-chorus part....This song rocks. OH MY GOD after the solo.... a capella "WHEN YOU'RE LOST IN DEEP DESPAAAIR!" part again, then it kicks it back up to 11 again. I am bowing to this song. I love Jon's piano part at the end with Neal hammering away at his guitar and Steve vocalizing over it. This.... this, my friend, is an awesome song. If you want to download just one song from this album, make it this one!!

Frontiers- Oh wow.... this one sounds.... dare I say.... PROGRESSIVE at the beginning! Very odd, syncopated drum beats and keyboard line. Very Rush-feeling. And very syncopated sounding guitar line, too. This sounds very Rush inspired. And Steve's vocals are giving off a LOT of Phil Collins vibes. Well I guess we know what they were listening to when they were writing this... (Rush and Genesis. :P) I love the chorus.... Steve almost sounds kinda operatic there. This whole song has a sort of dark, mechanized feel to it-- which makes sense, because this song seems to be about technology, computers, etc, from a sort of hesitant standpoint. They're not against computers/advanced technology, but they don't seem to be totally for it, either. Ya know? Ok, after another verse, that really cool progressive keyboard riff comes back in.... really cool.... one of Jon's coolest moments, I must say. And then Steve comes back in with the chorus still sounding pretty dang Phil Collins-esque. They both say their "i's" the same way. Heh. And it ends on a harmonized a cappella round of "We all need neeeeww frontiiieeeeers!" Wow.... I dig. Kinda chilling ending. This whole song kinda reminded me of something Queensryche would have written during their Rage for Order sessions. It even has a similar theme with the whole technology bit! Hm, pretty good for a pop-rock band!

Rubicon- Ok, this one is more major keyed and less progressive. .....I think I would have had Rubicon and Frontiers switched, especially since Frontiers's ending was so.... FINAL sounding. It would have been a PERFECT ending. Oh well. This song is cool anyway. Very keyboard oriented, but still a cool mid-paced number with a good chorus. Also, what's rubicon....? Whatever, it's not important. Though if anyone has an answer, that would be nice.

Favorite Songs- Separate Ways, Send Her my Love, Chain Reaction, Edge of the Blade, Troubled Child, Ask the Lonely, Frontiers
Least Favorite Song- After the Fall (Sorry, I just do NOT get this song's popularity at all)
Total Amount of songs- 11
Grade- A-
*If this album had its original tracklist, it's grade would be "B"*

Conclusion: this is a surprisingly hard rocking-- and DARK!!-- CD for somebody like these guys! I am pleasantly surprised. Sure, there's one doofy ballad (Faithfully), but the rest of the ballads are darker and cooler and the rockers ROCK! DANG! The only problems are one song and a few track listing issues. This might be my favorite Journey album.... right behind Infinity, in fact. I love the opposites in color scheme, heh. Infinity's cover is red, this one's is blue... it fits, though. Infinity is louder and more flamboyant; this one is darker and edgier. I wish they would have continued in this direction. Also.... listening to this album with Bose headphones is GREAT. Try it sometime; this album has perfect production. Perfect punch to the guitars, PERFECT drum sound, vocals out in front but not overpowering, and keyboards in the background when they need to be and out in front when they're the main attraction. Absolutely perfect

What I would do to make this album an A+:
1. Make After The Fall go somewhere instead of being meander-y like it is.
2. Switch the order of Rubicon and Frontiers.
3. Move Troubled Child to after Only the Young.

*The Final Track List would Be: Separate Ways, Send Her My Love, Chain Reaction, Faithfully, Edge of the Blade, Only the Young, Troubled Child, Ask the Lonely, Rubicon, Frontiers. *

Alright alright alright. The swears= gone now. The writing isn't supposed to be dead serious. If it was, I would have said so, and would have taken far more time on these. As it is, though, these were written while listening to each song, and was kind of a write-without-thinking deal. And yes, it was immature, but I know that now and tried to patch that up. Too late, I guess.

...Dammit, I knew I would end up doing something regrettable before long. And this.... is the epitome of regrettable. Ugh... *beats self up*
