What cover song or songs (no more than 2) would you like to hear live from Journey and why?

Discuss :) .

Always thought a cover album would be cool, esp as a 2nd disc as they're in their last legs now.

Wish they'd done it when Perry and Smitty were there.

I'm drawing a blank on the tunes 'cause its late Sunday and I'm dog tired.

Will def update with a list of at least two.

Okay, fred :):

I can only think of one and then I start thinking about Journey's catalog from the 70s and then I'm stumped. Let's see. Voodoo child could be #1 with Neal singing and playing but maybe this song can't be done a la JHendrix without being stoned and the crowd being stoned, too. So, how about a Roy Orbison song? Ray Charles? R-E-S-P-E-C-T? A rockin' Motown song would be a real treat but I wonder how it would sound with Journey? Dang, that would be unreal.

P.S. I understand, SC; I started this topic and I had to jumpstart my thoughts with a google...

I'd prefer some lesser known tunes.

Motown would be a good start. Add some rock to the soul.

This is offbeat but one of my favorite tunes is CCR's Have You Ever Seen The Rain? A classic that can't be improved on but fits Arnel's voice and I think Neal could shred a lead to it that would be awesome.

The obligatory simple bass line is just begging for Ross to do his blandest.

They could let AP wear one of those Stars&Bars bandanas.
I bet no one would be calling Journey a sissy band after seeing that.

New music. Who doesn't like that?

But if they're gonna include a "bonus" disc as they often do now, I'd rather they cover something other than themselves.

Some excellent tracks are covers.

If they did an album of covers I'd love for them to cover a Survivor tune. Arnel does that material as well as anyone and I think it would really showcase his voice. "The Search Is Over" immediately comes to mind. A bonus disc of covers would be killer.

Did you know That Open Arms is included on a Diamond Album that is not Journey's?
Mariah Carey's Daydream has sold over 10 million copies. I'm sure Jon and Steve collected some nice royalty checks with that one.
The Heavy Metal Soundtrack went platinum also.
The Last American Virgin soundtrack, no such luck.
Still, two out of three ain't bad.

Wow! Cool information. Never knew that. Between Escape, Daydream and Revealtion that's over 25 million records sold. Huge royalties.

Throw in Journey's Greatest Hits and a few other compilations (Essential Journey, Time 3, The Greatest Hits live, The Ballads) plus the movie soundtracks and were talking close to 40 million albums, without even being whored out to those K-Tel or Time Warner collections.

Pretty amazing.

Jon and Steve could live off just the bank interest alone accumulated from those checks.

The lesson learned here is, if you're going to have someone cover your song, make sure she has big fucking tits.
(or in Whitney Houston's case, hasn't learned the joys of usng crack yet)

Holy shit! A google search yielded pretty credible sources saying that Daydream has sold over 20 million worldwide.

"Sony Music Japan released a press release in November 1999 which said 19 million for Daydream."

And that was 10 fucking years ago!

Mick Jones is probably ecstatic that she's covering I Want To Know What Love is on her new album. Granted, it won't sell that many copies like she used to be able to move but still, a sizable check for him, probably.
Her new album is coming out the same day as Foreigner's Wal-Mart package, coincidently.

Mariah also covered Bringin' On the Heartbreak on her Charmbracelet album. It ONLY sold 4.5 million copies but I bet Joe Elliot and former bandmate, Pete Willis weren't complaining.

Thin Lizzy's Cowboy Song.

There's enough guitar jam that Neal could get into this. Double guitar so Friga can act like a gunslinger too.

Metallica did a standup job on Whiskey in the Jar so don't see why Journey couldn't either.

Fuck Covers....it's what bands do when their music is not well-known enough to carry the band on it's own....or they are looking for filler because they don't have enough music to get them to the end of the set.

Journey doesn't need any of that shit.....and thankfully, Journey has stayed them. Not to mention the fact that Journey, stylistically, is one of the more unique bands out there...

who is Journey going to cover? Survivor? LOL Bon Jovi?? LOL Hell, 3/4 of the AOR bands out there were ripping off Journey from the get go.....

Even Journey ripped off Journey!! I still maintain that those ridiculous re-records were the 2nd dumbest thing that band ever did behind letting go of Steve Smith.

The rerecs are inconsequential. No one cares about it, no one listens to it.

I agree their dumbest was dropping Smitty and Ross on ROR. That was just cold blooded with no justification.

After that, grouping a substandard mix of demos lying around on Friga's laptop and packaging it as a real album. Somehow they realized it was a throwaway so handed it out for free.

Not sure I agree with this thinking. They got alot of mileage out of those retreads....hell, if they were responsible for the printing costs, it was money well spent.....for they were able to cheat their way into a platinum certification with them.....

Yep, that's another gripe I have. That, and their crafty marketing (read: lying... ) ... "10 new songs and 10 re-recorded classics" - my ass! It was 9 new and 11 recycles, ya buncha cheaters! Sorry guys, but getting a new singer doesn't not give you a mulligan on the Generations material.

As soon as I heard Trial By Fire, I thought it would be great to hear them do a version of Dobie Gray's 'Drift Away.' That would have been a perfect song for them to perform live, had they toured.

well, that's splitting hairs, imho. who cares whether it's 10 or 11 retreads.

The fact that they included an entire disc of poorly re-recorded tracks that do nothing but showcase arnels inferiority to the master that originally recorded them....just to limp across the platinum line and claim he's the x-factor.....was cheating. No way around it.
