305K Copies sold.

Proof that losing most of your singing ability doesn't neccesarily mean the end of your career, especially when you have a ton of die-hard fans.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8247243.stm

Whitney Houston's comeback record has topped the Billboard album chart with sales of 305,000 copies.

I Look To You, her first studio album since 2002, chalked up the biggest week one sales of her career and the biggest of any female artist so far this year.

Its release sees Houston return to the public arena after a prolonged period of personal and professional turmoil.

The singer visited London earlier this year to preview her new tracks, which include the single Million Dollar Bill.

The album - which features collaborations with Alicia Keys and R Kelly - is released in the UK on 19 October.

Houston recorded an interview with Oprah Winfrey this week that the US chat show host called "the best interview I've ever done".

"I can't think of a moment when I had a stronger connection to the person I was interviewing," the TV star continued.

The conversation - Houston's first full-length interview in almost seven years - will be aired on Winfrey's programme next week.

Well, fuck me! I would never have called this, especially since most people who've heard it, including myself think the album is dismal.

I was a little surprised myself, it wasn't like Wal-Mart or one of the other big box stores was promoting her.

Even though we like to harp on issues like range or hitting high notes, For a lot of fans, it's not really a singing contest when it comes to older artists that have already established their legacy. They can get a free pass just based on previous achievements. As long as I still can enjoy their earlier albums, I don't mind rewarding her for her efforts, by making a purchase of a new album.

Look at Revelation, it's not like I bought that for it's stellar set of songs, sometimes it just comes down to brand loyalty I guess.

Whitney's die-hards do seem to dwarf Journey's in this regard.

That's why Perry can probably release a new CD and even if he sounds like a croaking Toad it will sell millions.

No, if Journey was only able to sell a third of Whitney's numbers their first week of release (with a three disc package that was only two dollars more than her one disc offering), I seriously doubt Perry could even come close.

Wrong. Perry will double the sales of Journey. I tried to drill this into that bone Sap 13's skull, that if SP does a AI night, a guest appearance, and the contestants sing his songs, that is one Helluva marketing night. Perry can go platinum, without the fuzzy math, because even as good a story as Pinny is, the real Journey fans know Perry was the bread butterer. For him to finally return will be epic.

No way. Perry already fell flat on FTLOSM. He wouldn't sell Gold even, unless that many were shipped.

FTLOSM was thrown together. Hell, I can say the same thing about Generations. He has had ample time off. You know he will put out something very deliberate and well produced, not some slinky shit in a can to make a quick buck.

We'll see.

Face it, America loves a comeback. It would work for Perry as well. The real tale (for both) will be continuing sales. Big debuts happen all the time but then the CDs tank from there. One thing I liked about Revelation's sales story is that they had a certain amount of staying power. They maintained a solid level of sales weekly. They may not have sold a total as high as Perry might, or Whitney did, but I respect their numbers...

Thrown together?!?! That album was his baby! He took 2 years and wrote, assembled over a dozen musicians and guest musicians, and over a dozen co-writers. I think the album suffered from just the opposite. He took too long and "tried" to make it good. You can't do that. It has to flow from the heart. He surrounded himself with minor league talent and the final product reflected that.

He had some pretty serious pipes left around that time and had he done a Journey album I think they would have been phenomenally successful. But, instead, he waited and we got his deep fried and hollow voice on TBF and then he split. Bad move.

That album was the Journey equivalent of an Emo/Grunge record.
