Whilst working away this track came on my Itunes and i thought nothing like a bit of Neal Schon, but on looking at the screen I found it was Trevor Rabin. I'm no expert on these things but the first 1min 20sec sounds very Schon like to me.

I'd actually compare it more to Steve Rothery of Marillion if anything. One thing's for sure, Neal, Steve, and Trevor all rock and play the style of guitar I love the most.

Either way, I enjoy Howe's playing but I do admit that he's slightly overrated in prog circles. There are times when he's sensational, yes, but other times he does sound sloppier than hell. It's actually part of the appeal to some Yes songs to me, though, but that critique isn't exactly baseless.

LOL.....Don't take it personally. I can be an asshole of the highest calliber. I was probably more a dick than I would care to admit without -rereading the thread (and I'm not in the mood to feel cringed, so I wont bother).

I still never got the attraction to howe. There were never moments of brilliance. For a prog band, I expect better. better precision, better execution, beter writing.....Howe had/has none of the three. He's only gotten worse in recent years....

I have referred to him as a "fumble-fingered <insert expletive here>"....but you will see that I apply the same endearing term for Jimmy Page, 94% of the grunge guitarists out there and Ace Frehley. and only the case with Jimmy and Ace, do I consider that they bring other things to the table which make up for their lack of technical precision.


But getting back to Howe...I just find him fucking awful. I was further turned off by howe after reading the way he treated Rabin on the Union tour. He was downright hostile to the guy.....despite the fact that Rabin was, from what I gathered, tremendously accomodating for Howe, giving him enough room to do what he did. I chalk it down to the fact that howe felt threatened by Rabin and just turned into a vaginal bitch around him. Anyone who's been in a 2-guitarist band knows exactly what I'm talking about.

In fact, the collosal prick that Howe can be is one of the many reasons why Wakeman isn't in the band anymore....so far as I can tell. Wakeman hates Howe.....I suspect that if Rabin stayed in Yes and Howe went off somewhere to grow uglier and kick his dog.....the Yes lineup these days would be Anderson, Squire, White, Wakeman and Rabin.....

Granted, Rabin is currently doing things far more musically complex than anything Yes can or will do....and he's probably making more money doing it...so it's all good.


Still, Howe's a vaginal prick of the highest order and he sucks at his instrument too....

Classic post. I feel the same way about Ace, and I have been listening to his stuff (KISS, solo, Frehley's Comet, etc.) for quite a long time. I would have liked to have seen the direction Yes would have taken had Rabin stayed in the band. He definitely brought more to the table than Howe, both as a writer and as a guitarist. He also doesn't look like he went to high school with Yoda, as Howe does.

I really like his playing with BA, but does he do much outside of BA? I just don't know that much about him.

Kieth Scott is a great player, but I don't hear his playing in Rabin's song posted above. Perhaps tonewise. I know Kieth Scott was a big user of Ken Fischer's Trainwreck Express amps....and the Rabin tone above has a mid-rangey tone similar to a trainwreck (although I know rabin used a jcm800 into a Marshall 1936 cab on that album and 90125).....but I don't hear any similarities in the phrasings...

Although....I definitely hear alot of Luke in his playing....but I still think Rabin is his own beast. He really has a distinctive tone to me.
