If Journey does in fact not tour (or only do limited dates) in 2010, this could go one of two ways:
1) It could mean we are getting the best album in quite some time in late 2010 or early 2011, to be followed up with a major tour. If they are going to be really taking their time on this album and writing as a band, the end result could be something great. No more Jonathan Cain pulling songs from his endless supply of already-written songs, and no more Neal Schon plugging in "new" lyrics to the same old formula. Taking an extended period of time to work on the next album and write as a band could mean big things.
- or -
2) The momentum they have built up with a very successful album, two very successful legs on the subsequent tour and multiple national TV appearances could subside if the band "disappears" for over a year. This time off would have to be handled well by the band's PR team (not always the case).
The last time Journey said they were going to take some time off, they did (2007). Granted, not having a singer made it easier for them not to tour. However this shakes out the band deserves a break at this point, having done (by my count) 139 shows on the Revelation Tour from June 8, 2008 to October 3, 2009.
"Does Journey really take an extended period of time off to work on an album, knowing that for all intents and purposes their time in the public eye is limited? Or do they have a new album out early next summer and tour behind it for another 50-60 shows? Tune in next year..."
Sounds like a soap opera.
