Next few shows are the "last 10 of 2009 and 2010"

Another blog post from Neal, regarding the final shows of the 2009 leg of the Revelation Tour...

If Journey does in fact not tour (or only do limited dates) in 2010, this could go one of two ways:

1) It could mean we are getting the best album in quite some time in late 2010 or early 2011, to be followed up with a major tour. If they are going to be really taking their time on this album and writing as a band, the end result could be something great. No more Jonathan Cain pulling songs from his endless supply of already-written songs, and no more Neal Schon plugging in "new" lyrics to the same old formula. Taking an extended period of time to work on the next album and write as a band could mean big things.

- or -

2) The momentum they have built up with a very successful album, two very successful legs on the subsequent tour and multiple national TV appearances could subside if the band "disappears" for over a year. This time off would have to be handled well by the band's PR team (not always the case).

The last time Journey said they were going to take some time off, they did (2007). Granted, not having a singer made it easier for them not to tour. However this shakes out the band deserves a break at this point, having done (by my count) 139 shows on the Revelation Tour from June 8, 2008 to October 3, 2009.

"Does Journey really take an extended period of time off to work on an album, knowing that for all intents and purposes their time in the public eye is limited? Or do they have a new album out early next summer and tour behind it for another 50-60 shows? Tune in next year..."

Sounds like a soap opera.

I just can't see how they wouldn't tour. I thought the new album would be out in the first quarter of next year. Wouldn't you want a tour to support a new album? And, isn't Arnel on a 3 year contract? If 2010 goes out without a tour he is also out of contract, unless renewed, of course.

They'll tour next year. I bet they record from the beginning of November into December and send Arnel home for the holidays and he'll return a few months later for rehearsal and a big summer tour.

Maybe they're gonna use the last year of AP's deal to figure out if/when they're gonna do Perry again.

Yeah, and they actually did it in 2007.

Nostrildamus still possesses the ability to walk it at any time and reclaim his old job. He should be able to pull off a 25 show, major stadium summer tour, and walk away from this thing with some grace and dignity. Something he neglected to do last time.

Funny cause I was thinking the same thing. Now that Neal knows Perry can indeed sing again, he's deciding on when to make the call! lol

I didn't even realize he said 2010. I'm sure it was a slip as far as the whole year. I agree with SJ, they will be promoting the album next year, so will tour. I see them taking off the year after. They have a momentum now with this second year with Arnel and people know him as the lead singer a lot more and I see them wanting to still capitalize on that with the new album. Unless they've changed it and will take a longer break and then go into the studio and take their time putting it out. Hmmmmm, interesting.

I'll be glad if they actually take time off. Record an incredible album and then let Arnel's vocals rest for most of the year.

Neal made two posts. In the second one he added the 2010 part. Great chance for him to work on his solo album. Everyone bitched that he toured Augeri to death, now word of them possibly taking a year off surfaces and people are talking like it's a bad decision. Arnel has already said this gig is tough on his voice, hence the group decision to step down. They can't step down any further and I can't imagine them breaking up the concert dates any more than they have been doing already.

A break can't be all that bad, can it?

Hey, maybe Neal and Arnel are gonna do a side project together on the rockier side. That could be cool.

I like the idea of going away for the year, but this should mean the album isn't released next year either.

The notion of taking time to write the album doesn't sound like a good concept to me. They took 2 years to write Arrival and it sounded too forced with the outside writers, etc.....too polished sometimes. In their heydey they cranked out albums every year.....it has to be spontaneous with them maybe to be magical.

Well, one thing is for sure, they really protected Arnel's voice this year with what they did with down-tuning a half-step and the spacing of the tour. Here we are at the end of the tour, and the videos from Atlanta a few days ago show his voice sounding clear and strong.

Maybe so Jana, but the songs sound terrible tuned down. Sound slow and angry. No thank you. If Pineda heard himself on tape, he can't be pleased. He sounds bad, real bad, although not his fault.

Look, they're 60 yrs old. Tour the shit out of your band, get as many miles to the tank as possible. Why wait? Write the CD on the bus while on tour. Yeah, going away is a good thing if you are a present day juggernaut band, but Journey doesn't have many days left. Poor Ross can start collecting SSI next year.

The songs sound terrible on video to me downtuned, but I'm not so sure I'd mind that much live in person. It's just different.

I agree, I think they should tour next year. Keep the momentum going. I don't think the songs sound terrible tuned down for the most part, except the occasional one. From all the reviews iI read throught the tour, it doesn't seem to be a problem. But I will let you know if it bothers me or if certain songs do after tomorrow night.

Yeah, I thought so too, Portland cuz it's true.

Eric, it doesn't matter whether or not he wants to work, that wasn't the point. You said that maybe they need to be spontaneous to be magical. I simply corrected it to what they need to be magical, not that it would or would not happen.
