I have a bootleg of him doing it in April of '82 in Tokyo. That's still the Escape tour, and I don't have any boots after that with Mother, Father in them.

He sang it in May of 82 when I saw them. Like Rick said, that was still the Escape tour.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Perry's 1981 performance of "Mother/Father" in Houston is the absolute GREATEST live performance by ANY singer, at ANY time, period, end, of story! This one performance illustrates the brilliance of Perry and why nobody else could touch this guy in his prime. As talented as Arnel is as a vocalist, he couldn't touch this performance. As for the lead singers before Arnel, those guys wouldn't have come close, even with all the tape on the planet!

It's my favorite Journey song as well. I've been listening to the Houston 81 version for the past several weeks now during my long drive.

I heard Deen's version first though so when I listen to the Houston 81 version, I can't help but think about Deen playing drums and singing that song at the Wolves Civic last year.

If you watch Deen sing it on youtube, the end falsetto is a track of SP, I think. Check it out. I know Deen stops singing so it's not him.

I think they play SP singing it. Somebody else check it and see what you think.

Deen does sing the hell out of it and while playing drums, that is really impressive.

Augeri used to do it in 2003. Soto never tried it. And like you said, Deen has handled Mother, Father on the last few tours.

Probably because Deen started singing it late in Augeri's tenure and while JSS was in the band, and it gives AP a good chance to rest his voice mid-set. Rather than take it out of the set completely, might as well let Deen shine and give Arnel a five minute-plus break.

No, that's Deen's song. It's been his for a while and I love the power of him drumming while singing it. Love it. It gives a whole new dynamic to the performance live.
