I'm sure they contacted him to ask him his thoughts about Arnel, he didn't just decide to mail a statement in of his own volition to chocolate saddlebags Oprah.

He took the high road and issued a nice canned statement. Good for him.

Neal's a lot like Lukather I think... very off the cuff, emotional, and territorial. We've seen that with the recent Hugo controversy. Not a bad thing in itself, because I love candor, but there are times when you should reel it in if you are like that (I am).

If I had to give an educated guess, I would say that the Oprah show went looking for the statement. Or more likely, the Oprah show went looking for more (interview, etc., to incorporate into the Journey segment) and were not granted that, but were given a consolation prize by way of a statement.

Again though, this is most likely a result of the Orpah show approaching him, not the other way around with him wanting to "keep his name out there". If they approached him, and he gave a short, polite comment because he was asked, what's the big deal?

He could have easily said "Fuck Neal and Fuck Journey too", just like Neal did to him. But he didn't, he showed some tact (regardless of his private feelings about it, whatever those are), and because he did, he's accused of doing it for some self-serving purpose?

This is such a stale and typical argument, every time the guy opens his mouth.

Seriously. Lame. We hear NOTHING from him, and people bitch to high hell that he doesn't make statements and we never hear from him... we DO hear something from him, and you all come out and tear apart whatever he says or assign reasons for why he might be saying it.

Okay. I know I'm in the minority here and I've never really said it. But I get the "fuck him" in a way. Neal was reacting to the cracking the stone or whatever the comment is Steve has used and I believe reacting also to the Steve not ever feeling part of the band comment from the VH1 show. The interview Steve gave for GQ where he tried to do damage control on that comment I don't believe Neal saw until after his interview already where he said "fuck him." Should he have said it? Maybe not, but at least it was not canned and his honest feeling at the moment.

Well, it is expected that anyone interviewing Journey, doing an article, producing a TV segment, etc., would want a statement from the biggest name in the band, so this is something he's probably been asked a LOT between the Augeri years and the Pineda years, and in the interest of maintaining decency, he probably makes the same or a similar statement every time, rather than getting too far into the whole history and messiness of it. It's a PR matter, plain and simple.

In most cases (be it Steve Perry or any other band/former-band member situation) it is the norm when the involved parties don't want to (or are barred from ) engaging in public mudslinging. Even with actors/acresses involved in public separations, or actors removed from future movie sequels... "Yeah, they're doing their thing, wish them all the best..." etc. It saves people (the interviewers as well as the readers/watchers) a lot of time, trouble and public discomfort to make a nice short sweet statement and just move on.

Of course he's not going to do that, he's not stupid, but really, he wouldn't have anyway - he never has.... he's not said anything negative toward them, publically, at any point, TV show, magazine, or anything else. No one said he had to MEAN it. I'm only giving the guy a few props for not taking the low road and publically saying "fuck those guys!" like SOMEONE else did.

Again, even when it does seem that Neal has something very legit to voice a problem about, such as this recent tribute band business, he comes off like an angry child. He was asked about Perry and said "fuck him"? I mean really, is that necessary to do in public?

I spoke with someone once who hasn't much knowledge about all the recent lead singer drama, tapes, and all the rest of it, (by which I mean impartial due to being oblivious to the whole Perry/Journey split, etc), and this person happened to have run across that GQ interview and read both parts, the Journey/Neal part as well as the Perry part, and her comment to me was, basically, "I couldn't believe what I read... Perry came off classy and had nothing bad to say and Neal comes in at the end of it and says "fuck him"? What a shithead!"

Maybe that's why Fro has had issues with matrimony, his "honesty" doesn't go over so well with the fairer sex.

Quite a few of my co-workers who I found out are old Journey fans said in the VH1 show they thought Steve Perry was pompous in it and couldn't believe his last comment. One said he was an asshole. But they all still love him, especially the women, even though they think that. At the end of the day, all of the band members are just flawed human beings, like all of us.

A slightly different way of putting it, but yes, that's the bottom line.

Schon just needs to stop reacting off the cuff the way he does continuously and realize that his present fan base still include a large portion of the past fanbase (as in PERRY-era) and use a little more tact. Fans of the past don't want to hear all that. As in my prior example of the definitive 'casual fan' who isn't necesarily up to date on all the epic drama from 1998-2009, but still runs across things like that GQ write-up, he comes off looking like a disgruntled, sour-grapey douche, or, as Dean said, like a filthy syphilitic rat turd. Whichever term y'all prefer. Both seem accurate to me.

What happens here, is that he continues to do that, so that even when he does have something legit to be upset over such as the tribute band business, we read it and think "Ok, more bitching and whining from Neal, what else is new. It's nearly impossible to take the guy seriously.

Sure, I believe Perry is a good man, even though he canned his own longtime bandmates, Smitty and Ross, and Herbie, and controlled the band to a certain extent towards the end but didn't think he was ever part of the band, and left the band hanging from '86 to '96, not seeming to really want to be part of them and left them hanging on the TBF tour, with to me no intent of of touring. I believe Neal is a good man too, and, yes, Jonathan. Especially Deen and Arnel and Augeri.

Does he come across better than Neal in a lot of interviews from years past? Absolutely. He has a way about him in interviews, a charisma and a way of sharing his thoughts on music that draws you in. The only place he didn't come across so great was VH1. Several places there where he came across arrogant to me, but still showed a great talent and passion.

Nobody in that band was a saint, so all good men in their own way.
