Greatest Hits Live

Why do so many people claim that this cd has a lot of mistakes and why isn't it mentioned more often? I listen to it all the time. IMO, this live cd has some of the best versions of the hits.

It's a great CD and when I had a guy put it in a local bar they threw it out after a few months because a lot of the regulars (older people) were complaining about "everyone playing Journey all the fucking time."

I seem to remember that Neal mentioned that he didn't like it because it had too many faults. Have you noticed any Dan? The songs are so fresh sounding and like I wrote, better than the other GH cd.

It's alright, but a lot of the songs are played way too fast! As for lots of mistakes... haven't really listened to anything off of there for a while, I'll have to go back and see if I hear a lot of flubs. There might be some miscues or flubbed notes here and there... but I dunno, nothing that sticks out in my memory.

I do remember thinking Friga's piano/synths sounded really cheesy on most of the songs.

Not one. And I'll take a live CD over a studio album any day because of the unique imperfections. If that one has any they're very minor and unnoticeable. I have a feeling that Neal may have had a fuck-up or two if he was that vocal about the album. I think it's fantastic.

I think that most songs are, for the most part performed faster in concert. Gotta make room for ad-libs and prolonged solo's I would guess. Schon is a madman and especially on LTS. He is at his overwhelming best on these songs, imo. No wonder he loves to tour with the freedom it gives him to let it all hang out.

I seem to remember some interview I think it was with SP - he was unhappy with the overall sound of the CD because you really can't hear the audience in the mix it all - it just doesn't sound "live." I think the editing they did to DSB to erase "right here in houston" sucks, personally. I don't think the band got to do much of anything to oversee the album, I think the entire thing was put together by Sony?

Hey chipmunk, same here. Perry sounds great on it. Its the DSB where Perry sings and then pause.... "Neal".

Haven't listened to it in ages, gonna spin it right now.

My favorite track on it is After The Fall 'cause, well that's my favorite Journey tune and Perry brings it here. Big time.

I played GHL the other day on the way across town. Mistakes? Nah...people shoudn't expect studio perfection from live shows. A lot of improvs are what make the shows special and fun. :D

I have to admit I'm enjoying the live in Manila CD a lot right now, though.

Songs are played faster, but were ALWAYS played at that tempo, because of the sampled vocal harmonies that the band (over-) utilized after Rolie left. A lot of bands play faster live simply out of the adrenaline rush, but Journey's uber-speed was completely intentional, for whatever reason.

I don't have a problem with Greatest Hits Live, but I find it pretty uninspiring, with a very dry, lifeless mix and all the songs taken out of order with no recording dates listed or context given. Luckily they seemed to remedy this with the Houston release, which blows GHL out of the water, sound-wise and conceptually.

Well, Kevin Shirley and Perry mixed the life out of the songs completely. Maybe that's what Neal meant? Horrible production. Captured is what a live album should sound like.

Except for the overdubbed backing vocals which are also on Houston. :(

If I recall correctly, as far as GH:Live, Stone In Love, LTS, Lights, Stay Awhile, Line Of Fire, Escape, DSB, and WITS are from Houston '81 and Separate Ways is from the Budokan '83 show.

Those are the only ones that I'm 100% positive about.

Shitty "live album." Listen to that POS and then go put on Captured. BIG difference. You can't hear the crowd or the nuances at all in GH Live. Neal told me personally that it was a "throw it out there" record. Maybe it counted as a release to satisfy Sony and their contract?
