So, if you were a naysayer but changed your mind?

What if a person were one of the naysayers, but had a change of heart? Is this ok? How does one save face?

I know there were people who said:

Oh, hell no!
No Steve, No Journey.
New guy won't last 3 weeks.
They'll never have a successful tour.
No more successful albums.
No more DVDs.
I don't like this lineup....and on and on.......

Well? What if you had a change of heart? What if you realized that after 2 years you really do like the music again and want to be supportive of the band and the new singer? Do you come out and admit it or do you stay true to form, keeping everyone convinced that you are still against it, while secretly listening to the music, watching vids, etc ?

This actually happened to someone I know. We were in the car and he got this agonized expression while I was playing Revelation. I asked what's wrong? He goes...well, uh...I said some things about Arnel and...uh...I was wrong. I really do like him now. Breakthrough! He had a hard time admitting it after all the negative and even mean things he had initially said, one of which was something about an Asian singer in an American band. I wonder how many this has happened to?

So, what say you?

I say you need to drink more Kool-Aid. I will happily point out the band's successes and failures when I see fit and pay no mind to "saving face" or any of that nonsense. I am on record as praising much of the band's post-Perry work, including some of it with Arnel. I am also on record as really hating the Manila DVD. It just is what it is and I think most sensible fans are very much like me.

There are a select few who can't be objective because of pre-determined views, but not as much as you Plokkers would like to believe.

Amnesty? Well, everyone's entitled to a change of heart...
There have been some things that haven't been 'great' (super bowl, Stone in Love from Chile) but I wouldn't use the word 'suck'. That doesn't mean I have blinders on, that means I've heard each of the band's singers have bad nights and I know how it is and get that. But the people that kind of keep ranting on Arnel just because he isn't the "Oh Schnozzed One", that's just stupid and they're missing some really great stuff. It's not his fault that their boy chooses to sit at home and I just think the band should get credit for moving on and doing what they like to do (though Cain... I can't tell if he likes it or not). But as Madsplash (who surprised me) happened to open his ears and realized, hey, there's some good stuff happening here.

On the Manilla DVD- Matt, you suck! ;) just kiddin'.
Actually, I need to get a 5.1 dvd player to tell if that's there or not. I've got my dvd player plugged into a stereo system that'll give me all kinds of options including 5.1, but I missed the boat on a 5.1 dvd player. When I hit that option on the menu, I get nothing. I thought it was my surround system, but it was the player. Ugh....
I so want to hear this stuff and The Beatles stuff in 5.1.

So anyone who is a current fan is a plokker? Fucking lame description considering I did not just become a fan because of Arnel. I'm lots older than you and have been a fan since about 1980. Do you even understand what a plokker is? My post is really just about one friend's real life turnaround and wondering if others have experienced the same and how they would deal with it.

Amnesty? Screw that. I like what I like and I don't like what I don't like. I'm not going to seek a pardon for keeping or changing an opinion and I certainly don't need approval from the present faction of Journeyloons and/or Plok People. That's the nice thing about opinions, you're allowed to reform them based on new information or new viewpoint.

I like most of this band's material up to and including the present lineup and it doesn't matter how much or little time it took for me to reach such an opinion. It's a rock band, not a royal court doling out punishment for treason. Let's come down off of our high and mighty horses a minute here, shall we? Some will hate it, some will like it, some will grow to like it more (or hate it less, if your a half-empty kind of guy or gal) and that's just the way it goes. So I'm not fully in lust with Revelation, big effin' deal. Maybe the next one will be better. Maybe it will suck more. Who knows. I'm not one of these people that likes something based on who is singing or playing. I go by what I'm hearing.

Amnesty? Are you freaking serious?

Uh, no, as your topic title clearly states, your post is about whether those who change their opinion should be granted a pardon and forgiven for being a "naysayer".

Jesus. of course it's ok. So a person changes their mind. BFD! Save face? For what? For not liking something and then admitting you've changed your mind?

Excuse me while I go beg my mother for amnesty for giving her so much grief about eating my veggies 25 years ago since I enjoy them very much now.

Considering you exhibit the intelligence of a starstruck 7-year-old girl, I wouldn't go trumpeting your age as you just did, said lack of intelligence being evidenced by your clear lack of reading comprehension skills in your stupid retort above. Nope, I don't know what a plokker is. Matter of fact, I don't even know what a loon or naysayer is. Could you explain what all three of them are?

BTW - That issue of Guitar Player you have for your avatar is still on our living room coffee table. Only magazine in our house to last that long sitting there.

I was thinking the wrong phrase was "sensible fans" You would have to define that, and it would never fit into the Perry forum for one minute. Maybe that's where you should test run this -- to see how many will admit it if they have jumped off the cliff. J/K of course.

As I see it, it's always the same people who do the twisting. Seriously, it doesn't matter if someone was a "naysayer" and changed their mind. That's perfectly ok. I naysaid a bit at first, I didn't like what I was hearing, then I gave it a little more of a listen and I decided that little Arnel feller was darned ok after all, and I've said as much many times, and I've never caught grief over it. Most folks are fine with that.

And no I'm not bothering with that goofy DVD unless I get a free one somehow because it's the same thing over and over with this band. Blah blah DSB, blah blah Separate Ways. *yawnscratchsmacksmackstretch* I'd so much rather go to the show and get the live experience. And that's ok too. :D

You're fighting a losing battle, Steveo. The 'detractors', 'haters', 'antis', whatever you want to call them won't ever come around. Journey could sell out 100,000 seat stadiums night after night and win 10 grammies, but these people will still say the same things: Arnel has diction issues, Neal has too many wives, Friga is gay, Ross is dead, and JSS and Perry are God. It's an old tune.

If you like the music -- any era for that matter -- just enjoy it. I don't see the point in battling when all opinions are pretty well grounded at this point.

You might say that. Just put Perry in front of it, and see what you get. Some over-the-toppers here. I don't have to explain over-the-toppers, do I?

It was all about Arnel and his "rags to riches" story. If Augeri was still in the band, they wouldn't have been anywhere near the Harpo studios!

you're really full of shit, man.

I say good for Neal and the boys. He can keep touring and earning a paycheck to pay off all his ex-wives

Duh, a majority of rockstars do have a lot of kids and ex-wives. So what?

At the end of the day, it's not 1983 any longer and most people outside of this board really don't give a fuck It's fine to be a fanboy, but some of you people coming onto this board to brag about Journey ranking number 65 on the Billboard charts (hell, even the radio show cut off at 40) is almost laughable

Everyone knows it's not 1983 anymore, again, DUH, but it's pretty damn clear that a lot of people outside these boards give a fuck. Have you ever taken a look at the billboard? Journey is a matter of fact above artists like: Beyonce, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift and frickin' Hannah Montana. So why would you think it's laughable, when in fact you have no idea what you're talking about. Journey is doing pretty damn good even without the o' holy Beaky Peartree and mr. Mimes-a-lot. They're more relevant today than they've been in years.

It was all about Arnel and his "rags to riches" story. If Augeri was still in the band, they wouldn't have been anywhere near the Harpo studios!

Geez, again mr. Obvious, of course Oprah wouldn't been interested in Augeri. Neal hit the nail when he got Arnel - the rags to richer story is simple, but damn effective in getting ALOT of PR.

There's a lot of stuff I don't like about how Journey have been doing their business (tapegate, Soto, not hiding valory's face behind a paper bag) but there's simplu no way you can take away from the fact that the J-boyzzz are doing real good. Journey will never be as good as they were with Nostrildamus, and it's time to get over it and enjoy the few good years Journey have left. :)

He can keep touring and earning a paycheck to pay off all his ex-wives  At the end of the day, it's not 1983 any longer and most people outside of this board really don't give a fuck  It's fine to be a fanboy, but some of you people coming onto this board to brag about Journey ranking number 65 on the Billboard charts (hell, even the radio show cut off at 40) is almost laughable. Listen, I personally like "Revelation" and think there are some really good tracks on the CD, but let's not lose sight of the fact that Journey wasn't on Oprah because of Journey or their music. It was all about Arnel and his "rags to riches" story. If Augeri was still in the band, they wouldn't have been anywhere near the Harpo studios!

Reading this post just got me to realize that the issue we have here on this topic is that we've got a number of different worlds colliding into one small area. Journey is at the center of it and there are all of these different age groups from many different generations and from all corners of the globe all gravitating into this one band. It's basically an atom collider effect.

Come on, man... What baffles me the most is the fact that you're most likely a grown up guy, with a wife (poor thing) and even some lard-covered kids, acting like your in some sort of mac and cheese induced roid rage. Keep your hands away from the Twinkies before logging onto MR next time, dude - the keyboard doesn't like your greasy ass fingers, and I don't like.. well, you.

Do you come out and admit it or do you stay true to form, keeping
everyone convinced that you are still against it, while secretly listening to the music, watching vids, etc ?

This actually happened to someone I know. We were in the car and he got this agonized expression while I was playing Revelation. I asked what's wrong? He goes...well, uh...I said some things about Arnel and...uh...I was wrong. I really do like him now. Breakthrough! He had a hard time admitting it after all the negative and even mean things he had initially said, one of which was something about an Asian singer in an American band. I wonder how many this has happened to?

So, what say you?

I say who to hell made you the judge and jury???? and who would I be asking to forgive me???

Good god!!! but don't worry I am not in my house with the shades pulled watching the newest members of the Journey on the new DVD and I am not listening to Revelation in my car with the windows up so no one knows

I have said what I think from day one and that will not change for me...and if it does for someone here than that is great for them...and well I don't think they should have to say a damn thing!!!!

But you love to stir the pot!!!! and for that maybe you could ask for some of the posters here to forgive you! as it gets old really quickly

I wasn't addressing you. I already know you are pure loon and that will never change. It's kind of fun seeing how riled up you can get though. You and MG are my two favs!
