Journey Masterpieces

I really feel Live and Breathe is a masterpiece. Just an absolutely beautifully structured song, perfection in melody and lyrics that carries all the way to the end. Some of the most moody, soulful melody they've produced as a band, with beautiful vocals and delivery by Steve Augeri. Love Neal on this song. A musician could describe this song better in why it's so great, but I love it.

What do you consider their masterpieces?

Little Girl.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Winds of March with Perry on vocals is the most perfect song they've got. Forever in Blue is good, mostly cause Smith lays the smacketh down on those drums.

Party's Over ... Why?

If someone asked me what Journey was all about, this is what I'd play them:

Great guitar playing
Great tenor vocals
Fun, "summer time" lyrics
Catchy
Big harmonies
Great drumming

I'l Be Alright Without You is great too to show off what an outstanding vocalist and guitarist Perry and Schon are, respectively.

Songs like Winds of March and Mother, Father are awesome songs and have great moments of musicianship throughout, but they aren't REALLY what Journey at the top was all about to me.

I'll be Alright Without You is so overrated to me. Great song for Michael Bolton. No offense Matt, I just don't get why people dig that song so much. Sounds like "Journey Lite" to me- no matter WHO is singing it. Just too loungy and Fender Rhodes for me... Blech. Journey's "Babe".

Eyes of A Woman blows it away.

Party's Over's good though.

I think you and I talked about this before. I see it as SP doing "80sized Motown." I'm a big soul/Motown fan so I love it. Plus, that is one of Neal's best solos ever for my money.

Really? I don't remember that. That was Neal's "Beyond the Thunder" sound. I prefer his "I'm gonna wank my guitar all over your face" sound. The guitar solos in "Little Girl" and also "Mother Father" are just killer solos. I never got into the 'mellower Neal' (unless it's Late Nite. That album rules). I like Motown too, but think that Perry did it better on "I Believe" from Street Talk. He NAILS Motown on that song.

See, I'm big into that Stratty sound he had goin for a while. I think it really suits his style when he dials it back. I bought a Strat after hearing Big Moon for the first time. M,F is a great solo too.

I prefer the Strat sound of "Lights" (sick of that song, but great guitar playing and sound on it. Very Hendrix)

The only thing great about that song is Neal. Perry's high grating vocals in places is nothing special, definitely no: The Voice.

That's a hell of a tone too... that's the only reason I'd stick around to see it live... I love when the overdrive kicks in on the solo with those double stops. Sounds GREAT, along with the descending bluesy run that follows.

That's a hard lick. I actually figured it out once, but to play it live... holy crap.

I would be happy if I never heard that song for the remainder of my life. That was definitely one of those songs born out of a THC induced stupor.

You know to be honest I've never sat down and tried to learn any of Lights cuz I just don't care for it. Maybe I'll sit down with that solo tonight. It would be a good excuse to finally restring my Strat, those strings lost their sustain a cpl weeks ago

Who's Crying Now is perfection to me as a Journey song.
To me, one of their best songs ever that has that special sound that is so unique to Journey.

The title track off "Trial By Fire".
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!
