The illustrious Kevin Chalfant!

I'm curious, do we have an age for this gentleman? I've subjected Google to the most thorough of cavity searches and turned up nothing. I need for someone "in the know" to... let me know.

Late 40s, early 50s? Came on the scene around the same time as early Bon Jovi (82)

HOLY FUCK.

Are you kidding me? Well... no wonder they passed him over.

I don't know much about Chalfant but I think he's definitely at least in his early 50s? Just thought I've at least read that somewhere...

That's disheartening... but he sounds fantastic! I wonder if he could feasibly handle the catalogue. Let's speculate!

I love his voice, but I'd rather not see him in Journey at this point. Maybe in 95, but not now. Have you heard him doing I Can't Hold Back on Jim PEterik's Live World Stage DVD? Awesome!

Not IMO for a whole tour. And, moreover, doesn't have the energy on stage anymore necessary for a Journey concert tour. I think he's in his fifties.

Kevin is in his mid-fifties. Not sure exactly but he's definitely in Schon/Cain age territory based on his career span.

Ehwmatt,
I'll check it out, thanks.

Jana,
Girl, you crazy! The emphasis for Journey is (and should be) vocals, not showmanship. Though it would be great if you could have both.

Jeremey,
Given Chalfant's age, and since you are a talented singer yourself, can you provide testimony how age plays a factor into singing? For example, are you finding it harder to sing Journey material than when you were youngER?

I'm a better singer in my mid-thirties than I was in my mid-twenties. But I'll probably be a worse singer in my mid-forties. It's like anything else....Expecting a 20 year career from a pro football player isn't reasonable. There's a lot of (relatively) old guys that keep singing, but they have less stylized voices than some of the more physically strenous singers (ie Phil Collins versus Robert Plant).

The first part of my reply addressed vocals where you wondrered could he handle the whole catalogue and I said IMO not for a whole tour. Then I went from "moreover" on addressing his energy on stage.

A whole tour? Well, let's be honest, very few people seem to have that longevity with Journey's catalogue. What if they de-tuned and/or made less appearances?

Fascinating. Could you elaborate more?

Not really, that's pretty straight forward and I am not sure what else would elaborate on that, but I'd be happy to answer any more specific questions you might have.

I meant what has enabled you to advance in your skills between your mid-20s and mid-30s that will fail you in your mid-40s. Do you predict a substantial drop in capability due to the touring demands of Frontiers?

The male voice is physically in it's prime around the ages of 28-38 or so. It's just the process of maturation of singing and experience. I don't think I'll have any drop in ability due to Frontiers - if anything it will keep me in shape vocally longer. If you are an athlete and you get "out of shape," you're not going to be able to get back into shape at the same level you were 4 or 5 years prior. Continuing to sing as much as I do keeps my voice in shape as long as I use it correctly. Unlike some that have tackled the Journey catalog, I think it's a bit more naturally suited to my voice, so I don't anticipate as much damage....It will be the natural aging that diminishes my ability more than anything. Assuming I don't start smoking again or decide to do Def Leppard covers on my days off.

"Erectile dysfunction, the inability of a man to initiate and maintain erection, can be attributed to psychological or organic (physical) causes. Roughly 75% of the cases have physical causes such as medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol levels. However, smoking is also pointed as a major culprit in increasing the risk of erectile dysfunction. In the UK alone, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and the British Medical Association (BMA) estimate that 120, 000 men in their 30's and 40's developed impotence because of smoking. This is likely to be an underestimate because it does not include the number of impotent men who previously smoked but have stopped.

In a study of 4,462 Vietnam War veterans between the ages of 31 and 49, it has been found out that the risk of impotence increases by 80% for smokers compared to non - smokers. Even when this value was adjusted when other factors were considered, the risk factor is still increased by 50%. Furthermore, smoking increases other risk factors for impotence. Smoking has been considered to cause complete impotence in men with hypertension, high cholesterol levels and diabetes. Therefore, smoking is not just a risk factor in itself; it actually worsens the effects of other risk factors."

All the more reason not to smoke those nasty things. Never had a cig in my life. I've had a few cigars, but that's it. Seeing my grandpa die at 62 with lung cancer, having the oxygen tank, and the whole nine yards when I was just 12 was all I needed to see to never want to try them.
