Anyone check SteveAugeri.com?

Postby YoungJRNY » Thu Dec 10, 2009 11:57 am

Just had the thought to check SteveAugeri.com. I wasn't expecting to see what it read since I haven't heard TOO much on him lately. World Tour in '10, SWEET! Who's there?

I'm looking forward to hearing SA'a solo album too. Hopefully Andrew reviews it on MR and gets a new interview once the tour starts!

Great photo. Good news. I've always said he should do a solo and do it in the vein of Kiss Me Softly:

I don't. I prefer to hear a guy that can actually hit the notes and has some energy on stage. I love Augeri and I had the first TS album since it came out and I was psyched when he got the Journey gig, but live with Journey, it was just a really difficult gig for him. He just didn't have the power and range that the 'what they have today' guy does.

"That gig was always tough for him"- that from a mutual voice teacher.

His recorded output was great though and I will be glad to hear him with new stuff. The last Tall Stories album was "okay" but not as good as the first to me. I still bought it and will support the guy because he's a good singer and a class act. It will be nice for him to do songs written for his range and I'm sure it will be a cool album.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Agree with this. Seeing him live was flat out brutal w/J at times. Glad he's moved on and anxious to hear his new stuff. I hope he chooses his song set wisely when he tours.

That may mean he signed to something like Frontiers Records, which wouldn't be surprising at all. If he's staying down the melodic rock path, it's quite logical. That means a European tour and maybe 1-2 warm-up dates in the US before he goes overseas. Don't expect a 30-date stateside tour--sad to say, he doesn't have the following to support it.

was there a question on if he was doing the MR thing? I hadn't heard that.
I figured it'd be the Journey-ish/Tall Stories-ish types of things he's done before.

How do you figure that he doesn't have U.S. fan support, but he has enough European fan support for a full European Tour? That makes no sense. Journey toured WAY less in Europe during his tenure than they did the States.

I wonder how many Journey songs he will include in the setlist? I would think at least two or three.

I think we may all be in for a surprise.

He's said before that he considered himself more Robert Plant-ish than Perry-ish before the Journey gig came along; he also mentioned at Firefest last year to some of us talking in the bar that his solo stuff seemed to him to be coming out pretty different from either Tall Stories or Journey.

Bring it on, whatever it is; I couldn't be happier for him, and can't wait to be there -- front row.

That last TS album was much more bluesy than what he did with TS prior or Journey. Hopefully, there's some of that.

How do you figure that he doesn't have U.S. fan support, but he has enough European fan support for a full European Tour? That makes no sense. Journey toured WAY less in Europe during his tenure than they did the States.

Two reasons....

#1....US is much more spread out, where the UK is compact. He may have a fanbase here in America, but they aren't near each other to make many gigs profitable--and there is a huge traveling expense to get between the markets that may have enough support. For example, he might be able to play New York City and Chicago, but couldn't draw the crowds in Buffalo/Pittsburgh/Cleveland to make the traveling between NYC and Chicago break even.

#2....if it is Frontiers Records, they have things set up in the UK, not the US. They could put Augeri on a tour with someone who can help draw crowds (ie Danny Vaughn, JSS, Jimi Jamison, etc). You have to remember--Journey does have a fanbase in the UK/Europe. They just didn't exploit it until recently. UK is pretty compact also, so the traveling expense between gigs isn't all that much. That means it's much easier to make money on a tour.

Of course, all this is dependent on Augeri doing a melodic rock album. If he goes down the Led Zeppelin (or other) path, I doubt Frontiers Records would be all that interested, as it's too far from their target market.

I read that a lot of those songs were older songs already written. Were they recorded also much earlier? His voice sounds strong and clear, much better than Arrival, though the songs aren't as good as Arrival. And I wondered if it's b/c it was mostly recorded pre Journey or after he stopped singing the taxing Journey classic songs and rested his voice, and then recorded these more recently.

Yeah, the songs were recorded earlier and I think the vocal tracks on it also were older. The drum tracks had to be redone and I think that was most of the 'newer stuff' on it.
I still like that style of his voice though. It was cool to hear some 'blue notes' out of him.

I don't want to rag on him because I like him, but honestly, yours and my concert experience differ greatly- I saw him at the Gorge during one of his earliest tours (with Foreigner when Lou was still there). When Augeri went for the high B note in "Don't Stop Believin'" ('somewhere in the niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight'), he did it with this airy falsetto that just did not cut it at all. It had no balls, and the pitch was horrendous. I was really let down by it actually, but I supported Steve until the very end. I still do. Even supported him through TG. I could TOTALLY see how that situation could've happened. I felt sorry as Hell for him during that time. He just wasn't up to it vocally. His sense of live pitch was also not great as I've mentioned a million times. I figured he must've just had a bad night at that Gorge show... Then I heard subsequent boots (of which I have many) and his pitch and power just never improved. The fact is that his voice was not up to touring doing Journey's material and that was proven. It's too bad that it was proven in public with such a humiliating circumstance. As for stage mannerisms, to me he came off too laid back for Journey. Journey needs a front guy that's more engaging. Having said that, the guy is one of the classiest 'stars' to ever come along. A really good guy. It just wasn't a good live gig for him. The albums were great though.

With Arnel (yeah, you knew I'd go there)- I've heard him sing pretty much everything that Augeri had to sing with the exception of some Generations and Arrival tracks. As a vocalist, I'm a lot more impressed by what AP brings to the party. Accent issues aside, (and I think many are exaggerating those things) the guy's voice is flat out huge and it's got balls to match. He's singing THE toughest catalog in rock and doing it much better than either of his predecessors could hope (not talking about Perry here- settle down Portland!). I've also heard him sing other stuff that just is amazing. "Alone" by Heart? Are you kidding me??? The lyrics might've not been translated corectly, but the notes most certainly were. Arnel got my respect the second I heard about him and watched those clips. I KNEW that he'd be good for Journey and Neal Schon was no fool to contact him immediately. That has been proven in spades.

The media LOVES this guy. They love his story. They love that he's taken Journey up a notch from where it had fallen. That is great for Journey- which by the way, is also not bad for Perry or Augeri either. What's good for Journey is good for them.

I'll say it again- Just because Perry ain't here, doesn't mean you can't love what Arnel brings to Journey. Arnel is taking nothing away from Perry (or Augeri). He's good enough to make his own name. Yeah yeah... without Perry there'd be no Arnel. No kidding. That has nothing to do with it. The guy IS a killer singer and he gets my respect just for that.

The fact that you constantly crap on him, I just don't get it. Anyway-

Augeri was great for Journey at the time, at least his recordings with the band. Live- I didn't think so. If you take a look at Youtube, that is pretty much proven with most live videos of him with Journey.

So right. Arnel's vocals live are really flat-out amazing plus his engaging presence on stage. And before anyone goes on and on how he jumps around too much. , most of those people didn't see him this year. I didn't mind it last year, but he definitely toned it down as he settled into this tour and had a lot more confidence deeper in, and his energy level on stage this year was perfect and always with a great smile.

Loved the band with Augeri, lukewarm to cold on it with Arnel, just my opinion. I saw him 5 times, 4 times before TG hit, and I enjoyed him immensely all four times.

I didn't mind it last year, but he definitely toned it down as he settled into this tour and had a lot more confidence deeper in, and his energy level on stage this year was perfect and always with a great smile.

Got no problem with the jumping. Perry was ALL OVER THE STAGE each and every time I saw him. Many people said THAT was too much. I don't agree. Perry was a great front guy and great showman - period. To me, he's always been the best front guy. Augeri was more laid back and "let the music do the talking" kind of guy. That's fine too, but it doesn't make for a very exciting show IMO.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

WOW......I made it into that long ass post....I feel so special!!!

sorry, I'm a writer, I get wordy....!
