Which Album Better - Escape,Frontiers or Raised On Radio.....
1981-1986 these are the first three studio albums of the jon cain era of the band.Escape is his debut and had great tunes like Mother Father,Escape,Who's Cryin' Now,Stone In Love, etc.
Then there was Frontiers which had great tunes like Edge Of The Blade,Seperate Ways,Chain Reaction,Faithfully, etc.
Finally the last studio effort of the decade Raised On Radio had great songs like Why Can't This Night Go On Forever,Girl Can't Help It,Happy To Give,I'll Be Alright Without You.

Escape and Frontiers are interchangeable for me ... with Frontiers getting the nod if someone put a gun to my head. ROR is really good, but also really gay at times.

I'm going to be in the minority but I say:
1. ROR
2. Escape
3. Frontiers

Steve Perry's vocals were off the charts or for a better term (PERFECT) for each of the three types albums. Each with totally different written arrangements on the three projects. It would have been hard pressed for someone else who could have topped his vocal ability or even have the talent or luck to pull it off (He was at his best live). But with that being said, for rock (Frontiers), for smooth lyrics with a commercial vocal taste (ROR).
But ask 1,000 different people the same question 25 years from now and you'll get totally different answers with totally different opinions. By then i believe his vocal legacy will be at a vocal cultual legacy as years go by rather than a musical legacy. No one has ever sustained such natural ability like Perry.
Click UTUBE sometime and find his early vocal warmup work before shows or even Journey's soundstage practice sessions (VIA Clark Productions). This is when Perry's voice was at its best and had not taken many vocal hits or haunts. The bottom line was that Journey's worst days were probably far better than alot of groups best days, moreso live.

Haha... every few months, these album comparisons crop up

. 361 above said it best, 3 different-type of albums...all great marked by SP vocals at his best. Not diminishing the other 4 guys, though...it was the collaborative efforts of the entire bandmembers to make the songs come to life.
ROR is my favorite (never gets tired of listening to WCTNGOF), but ESCAPE probably is their all-time best album (sales #'s don't lie, lol). No filler...every song on that album is kick-ass. There was a time, listening to Frontiers, I thought the "B" side was forgettable (all the hits were put on first). But, with the re-mastered version of throwing in there OTY, ATL, and OS, Frontiers has become quite a kick-ass album, too.

Agree Escape and Frontiers both fantastic, with Frontiers maybe a tiny bit better as far as my favorite.
ROR last. Stunning vocals by Steve and great tone in his voice and really some great songs, but some of the dated pop beats in many songs take it down a notch for me.

Escape
Frontiers
TBF
That's it....I'll vote for ROR when a Steve Perry solo album thread starts.

I can't decide. Frankly, Mr. don't-fracture-the-stone did a bit of said stone fracturing himself on ROR, so I have to take points away from it for that move.

Escape was just solid all the way around...great songs, well-mixed, etc.
Frontiers was a little out there...probably mixed a little too loosely.
ROR was a snooze.

If Frontiers has its true track listing (OTY+ATL), then:
Frontiers
Escape
RoR
All good albums, although Escape has always been a tad bit overrated for me.

Frontiers kicks escapes ASS... Seperate Ways... beats DSB... for sure...
Send her my love is just awesome... even Back Talk was pretty good for a filler... then add Rubican
Frontiers..troubled Child, Edge of the Blade FAITHFULLY... killer rock ballad to this day... after the fall
CHAIN REACTION... Note to self get out Frontiers and crank it up again!!
STONE IN LOVE is best song on escape. Whos Cryin now is 2nd best song.

Escape is a better listen the whole way through.
But in my opinion, Perry's vocal strength wasn't fully developed until Frontiers and there was a bit of processing on his vocals on that record that IMHO solidified what people hear as the "Perry signature sound" 25 years later.
Raised On Radio is a comedy and a tragedy all rolled into one. It's mood music for me, and if you're not in the ROR mood, you may as well hit skip....

The thing is that Arnel had a bad day. But Perry, well.....I think that's about it, unfortunately.

1. Escape: Solid album with hit after hit
2. ROR: Love the sentimental feeling and the bluesy soul of songs like "Ill be alright without you", "Girl cant help it"
3. Frontiers: The harder edge of all the three with Seperate ways, and the awesome ballads faithfully and the very underrated send her my love
