because if you form your new band and go on a tour this year, where will you post the schedule? (I wonder if Neal will ever update his own website...)

P.S. Jana, Neal posted a new squib on his blog wishing everyone a safe and happy new year if you haven't seen it yet...

Let's do some quick, albeit loose, math. They made $7 for each unit Revelation sold. That's roughly 1.1 million units (and counting) sold X $7=$7.7 million. They've done about 140 shows with Pineda and command $150,000 per show so that's another $21 million. In 2 years with Arnel they've made about $30 million (gross) ... especially if you factor in swag and their #1 DVD. The only way Pineda would ever leave is if he quit or Perry returned, and I don't see either of those things happening. This is arguably the best shape they've been in since 1983.

Scarab needs to pull an Urban Meyer and Quit, Retire and then go on an indefinite leave of absence.

Seriously Gator...that was weak sauce.

I've read that they get much more than that...at least for a headlining show...more like $350 grand per show. The festival type shows with a short set, like those shows they did in Europe last summer with multiple acts are the lower pay day, as I understood it. I could be wrong though, but it does make sense.

Try 250,000 per show, now groups like Poison command 120,000.

Whatever it is, they'll be fine. Neal was able to buy a multimillion dollar house with Pineda on board. I'm sure the timing is just coincidence. :D

Phuleeez, He's always had multi-million dollar houses. He's wealthy. He bought it b/c he divorced and needed a new house. Arnel can thank Neal, though, for his house.

The booking fee for the Def Leppard/Journey Tour in 2006 was $250,000 - indoor or outdoor, regardless of capacity. So I would imagine booking Journey by themselves is still less than that, and booking them while they're on a package tour (i.e. Cheap Trick/Heart/Journey in 2008) is probably about the same.

From what my promoter friends tell me, bands have an 'ask' price, not necessarily a standard fee. In other words, they may not get the exact same money for each show. Been told that just about all shows are negotiable, including the riders & backstage access.

I know for spring festivals around here, the organizers come up with a budget and then make offers. Some artists pass, but many take it. Think about it. If a band is booked in Memphis and then Dallas a few nights later, why not stop in LR for a night? Maybe the money is less than the bigger metro areas, but still it's a paying gig and they're driving through any way. Some, even though maybe out of their way, will come here for less than their ask, just because they want the exposure. I've heard of meet-n-greets & radio interviews/promo spots part of the deals also.

One promoter once told me that getting a band to play is pretty much like buying a house.

This makes the most sense. Journey played a few less shows in 2009 then they did in 2008, yet the money difference was huge, as evidenced by where their tour ranked in gross dollars earned this year as compared to 2008. I think the venue has to be a contributing factor to how much the band receives. I'm thinking a 5,000 seater show at the Greek pays more than 8,000 seats at the Indiana State Fair does.

I can think of 2 reasons why this might be. I believe the tour receipts count the entire bill and the Journey/Heart CT bill had to command a LOT more than just Journey or Journey/Nightranger, and didn't this last tour have more dates overseas ... which I believe are not recognized? Just 2 possible explanations. But, you're right, the venues were smaller so it could be a combination of all 3.

The '09 tour was even better than the '08 one, IMHO.

Dan, I agree wholeheartedly that they are in fantastic shape right now.

They're getting respect and even (gasp) accolades in the press...EVERYONE I know (even those who are NOT fans) knows Pineda by name, his story...I think it's gonna be a fucking great 8-10 year ride.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

What I think would be cool as hell would be to have a concert they played for an entire weekend, like memorial weekend, 4th of July or something like that, where they took the whole catalog and just played for days with some breaks in between. An event like that would be a mega concert that would draw people from around the world. I'm talking big...really big...so big it would be hard to find a venue large enough. If they could bring some former members to make guest appearances, even you know who...that would be even better. It could be an event of a lifetime. Can you imagine? :D :D :D

Yeah, and then Steve Perry showed up towards the end of the weekend with Gregg Rolie in tow, and they played the entire Infinity and Evolution albums with Arnel and Steve Augeri singing backup instead of using sampled backups. During the last encore song Friga did a stage dive, but Stevew jumped out of the way and let him hit the pavement. Then everyone shook hands and hugged, and we all went home.
